⚠️ #Tusky v32 ⚠️, some #CustomEmoji in posts are being animated despite having them disabled in Tusky's preferences.

Just came across one of the fast paced flashing blob emojis (blob_rave) through scrolling and spotted it. Searching that emoji "blob_rave", most rightly aren't being animated, but there are a few that are popping up for me being animated, specifically a post containing that emoji that also is in #MastoAdmin & #FediAdmin tags.

looking at Ten Forward's access logs today, caught another bot

"87.106.7.17 - - [03/Feb/2026:16:49:25 +0000] "GET /api/v1/statuses/[REDACTED] HTTP/1.1" 403 153 "-" "Bot/Research-Public-T2""

all GET requests from that IP in AS8560 (IONOS SE) to various /api/v1/statuses/ endpoints

added it to the list of bots I'm blocking by user-agent hence the 403 now

What actually is the mastodon upgrade path across minor releases, like v4.3.18 -> v4.5.6? The release notes generally mention only upgrades from the most recent patch release in the same minor (vA.B.n-1 -> vA.B.n). Are huge jumps safe, assuming the new minimum requirements are met? Are backwards-time+forward-version (eg v4.3.18 -> v4.4.0) upgrades invalid? Are all intervening database migrations handled automatically at service startup? Any gotchas?

@Natasha_Jay by the attention this has got on an electronic media, the flag concept seems by no means redundant! Now we need a complete set of #emojis that can be imported by #fediadmin's!

Can any instance operators offer an explanation as to why federating with Mastodon from an instance not running their software tends to be more difficult?

I've noticed lately that when viewing a profile from a Mastodon instance, their post history tends to be incomplete or otherwise missing. Any posts that are made recently tend to have a significant delay or don't show up on their profile at all.

I know that you can view the content from the remote instance in question for a complete profile, that you need to do so however does seem to be a failing on the part of the server software to properly federate and populate posts.

At some point I should write up a segmented walkthrough of my #SelfHosted setup, including the things that the #Mastodon documentation leaves out about data retention and backups.

Someday.

Wrote with #Claude Code assistance a #macOS #TimeMachine monitoring agent for my #Mastodon and other #SelfHosted service backups that makes sure that TM's backups of my database backup tarballs are recent enough.

Because I don't trust Time Machine to fail loudly enough.

You really ought to write a blog post on epistemic heuristics and the impact that it has on moderating communities @xaetacore. I've known for a while what it was through observing cause and effect, but never really knew the proper terminology for it until recently. A lot of interactions suddenly made a whole lot of sense afterward in retrospect.

Apart from the issues with Friendica, my main reason for a change is, that i don't need most of the special features it has to offer. Hubzilla is even bigger without any added value to me.
The only real downside with Mastodon is the theoretical character limit of 500. But this can be changed to up to 5000, which is more than Sharkey's 3000. But in the end, even my pinned post uses less than 2000 characters at the moment. And i can be sure, that Mastodon has a solid basis for further evolution. The UI of Mastodon is not as fancy or customizable as others, but i don't really need more for my social network dose. And this should be the most important point for my decision. My friends and followers don't rely on the service i use, i can connect to everybody i care about and need. #FediAdmin
