looking to self-host a #matrix server as a #discord replacement to migrate my friend group away from there now that the whole age verification catastrophe is happening.
is there a #conduwuit alternative that isn't uncomfortably sexualised and in-your-face about everything?
i guess i could use regular #conduit, but the docs warn about it being somewhat unstable compared to the former. #synapse seems to be insanely difficult to set up, and #dendrite looks like it has none of the strengths of the two others
i'd just use "conduwuit" but as a trans person it's making me genuinely super uncomfortable to see that kind of hypersexual fetishy trans 'representation' that they're going for. i just want a normal software project

okay I looked around a bit and if you want
- decentralized chat
- with "multi-room" spaces like discord
- and plural-friendly features like changing your nickname and avatar per-room
then the best option seems to be Cinny client for Matrix: https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/cinny/
there's really no perfect alternatives sadly, Discord just does too many things and nobody else does ALL of them
but Matrix seems to have the best ratio of good stuff to bad stuff right now

In Discord, starting in March, they will require age verification (with a camera or ID), and they will also analyze messages with a 'model' to identify whether you are an adult.

I know there is a lot of hate for #Matrix around here, but I do still consider it the least bad option as a #Discord alternative.
It's *far* from perfect, but it's enough to keep my community afloat, with the features we need, without the risk of being locked into yet another corporate ecosystem.
We've been running a Matrix/Discord bridge for a long time now, so the chat history and everything is already there, up to a point, and we've been helping people get switched over to it, or at least figure out setting it up as a backup plan.
Things are about to get pretty wild, and it's not going to be the most comfy transition. We're going to lose some functionality, but I think we got the important stuff all accounted for.

- #Element: cliente del protocolo de comunicación #Matrix, federado por lo que puedes registrarte en un servidor o alojar el tuyo.
- #Zulip: más similar a Slack y por tanto el registro parte de elegir la organización que quieres crear o de la que quieres formar parte.
- #Steam: Si juegas en Steam y usas Discord por ser el chat gamer me dejas sin palabras.
