A fresh look at the mess we need to compost
DRAFT, needs bit more work. Our example of: Tactical Tech is a Berlin-based nonprofit that’s been around since the early 2000s, working on tech, activism, media, and education. Their core thing is: building digital literacy + critical thinking tools producing toolkits, exhibitions, and guides (like The Glass Room, Data Detox Kit) working with civil society orgs, journalists, activists, educators focusing on how tech shapes power, politics, and society They’re not grassroots […]https://hamishcampbell.com/a-fresh-look-at-the-mess-we-need-to-compost/
#Mastodon dot-social is confused with the #fediverse because one of its strengths is how well it manages tags.
you can tell @MastodonEngineering focused on optimizing hashtags when they didn't have the server power needed for search. you can easily find info, people & communities with little server power.
so Mastodon.social is the target of #DDoS #warfare because it is the site where you can see what’s possible with #ActivityPub & that is not controlled by #techbros billionaire parasites 🧵…
Many people are talking about decentralized social media protocols like #ActivityPub and #ATProto and all the amazing things one can do with them. But do you actually know how they work? We thought we'd do something about this. Come to #FediForum next week if you are curious and like to find out!

How to Install #Pleroma on #Ubuntu #VPS (5 Minute Quick-Start Guide)
This article provides a guide demonstrating how to install Pleroma on Ubuntu VPS.
What is Pleroma?
Pleroma is a free, open-source, self-hostable microblogging server that speaks the #ActivityPub federation protocol—so your users can interact with people on other #Fediverse platforms (e.g., Mastodon) while you keep full control over your server ...

Apparently mastodon.social is undergoing a massive #DDoS that brought it down, which may or may not be related to the disservice experienced by #BlueSky last week. Of course, this being the #Fediverse, the only measurable effect for the majority of Fedizens will be some reduction of traffic on their timelines, depending on which fraction of their followings are on that instance.
And this is why #ActivityPub, with all its deficiencies, is still better than #ATProto.
The longer I look at Nostr, the more enthusiastic I get. It does have a bad reputation – people say it’s just full of Bitcoin scammers. But they’re now AI scammers, or back on Twitter X. In any case, they have a music player, which nobody on Mastodon seems to need.
AND they’ve found a way to pay artists too. With Lightning Zaps (which are based on Bitcoin), you can send a couple of cents – a ‘like’ that’s just a little bit more. A really good idea. Love it. Join me:

The only thing that I would bring in regarding emoji use in display names is #a11y issues if there are a lot of them. I'd say recommended practice should be to have 1 and max. 2 emoji in the name, so #screenreaders don't have read a long shebang you sometimes see on 'funny' display names.
But perhaps someone better versed in #accessibility issues for the visually impaired can chime in on this #ActivityPub #FEP (and perhaps other FEP's too), if this is a real issue. A "fediverse accessibility best-practices" may exist as well (somewhere).
PS. I outline a lot of these thoughts in my recent blog post on Grassroots fediverse #evolution, see:

#nobot is good enough... until it is de-facto #standard and there's no way back from #protocol decay, that is now common practice across the installed base.
That an actor has a profile specified in a particular way, and that that profile has a bio description, and that that bio description may contain a growing number of special control words. A growing collection of #domain-specific language that arbitrary #apps impose, is severe example of protocol decay that significantly decreases the attractiveness and value of adopting #ActivityPub. To adopt, you are required to hem yourself into very particular approaches, accepting all kinds of app-specific leaky abstractions that may be totally irrelevant to the business or application domain your project models solutions for.
On app-centric #fediverse-we-have an app developer has to force their app into a pretzel for interoperable wire exchange that doesn't look and feel like #microblogging.
This will only grow worse over time.
