after the fiasco of us-east dying yesterday we're considering spinning up a matrix instance and moving from signal eventually so we can keep in contact with our loved ones . . .
Does anyone run their own instance?
Any issues with running it? or fixes to bugs?
Tricks and tips?
(Boosts Welcome!)

"We need to go beyond Signal" – How today's AWS outage shows the weaknesses of centralized apps | TechRadar
> Signal's privacy and security are great, but being a centralized app makes it vulnerable

Today showed us that the Matrix and mainly selfhosting is the way! 👌

@lunte161 same here. Recently I was checking out #matrix vs #xmpp . Before I thought they were the same, but no. They're different protocols, xmpp being older (or more mature?) using xml, and matrix younger, using json.
After reading some articles, I still don't know which one to choose. Maybe just take both?
I'm not really here (I'm a ghost OoOoOo 👻).
Matrix instance recommendations? Is there any reason to use anything besides .org for regular messaging?
Matrix isn’t just another chat app as it’s an open, decentralized network where you own your conversations. No walled gardens, just real freedom to connect. 🌐🔑 #linux #matrix

Today, instead of the usual Monday #Canadaland show, typically somewhere north of 30 minutes, I got a nearly 15-minute appeal from #JesseBrown to mark the beginning of his company's crowdfunding campaign. The version I heard is a little bit different from the thing that non-supporters would have heard, but it seems mostly the same. Here it is: https://www.canadaland.com/podcast/1248-were-in-the-fight-of-our-lives/
The first bit is very #ElbowsUp (he uses those words), articulating the challenges to the continued existence of #Canada as a state and any kind of distinct society from the United States. And he says that the company he, and others, built up over the years, was made for this moment. I sort of agree. And I posted it about it in the extended family groupchat, saying "maybe give these folks some money"
That's the most I'll do. For anyone reading this on the fediverse, I will say, it's cool to get no ads (no hitting the skip button) and it's cool to lock in lower prices for yourself but Jesse is doing a lot of talking the talk without walking the walk. In 2025, his company has gone all-in on using #Discord, an already enshittified and ever enshittifying U.S.-based spyware platform, as a way for Canadaland's public personalities to engage with their audience. This is understandable; there is no obvious or great option in terms of alternatives (though I think #Element / #Matrix is a good option). But then I think about it in context: Jesse's very bad take on Mastodon and the fediverse in 2022; his joining the herd that went to BlueSky, which has some federation features but still fundamentally a U.S. sovereign product
So, unless you really hate ads, I do not recommend giving Canadaland any more money than you already do - not until Jesse does the minimum, and even #BridgyFed so fediversers can follow him, like Justin Ling has done
Feel free to boost
I wish @Iconfactory or @tapbots would make a #Matrix client..
The Retro Gaiden #Matrix chat room is active with great members and good conversations.
It’s much more secure than #Discord and the Cinny client gives you access to tons of custom emojis.
Have you joined yet? ![]()
