we need ONE major Europe-based messaging app that works only with a phone number as ID. Privacy is less a concern than Security and Sovereignty. We cannot convince a large amount of people to switch if it is not easy . Signal is still the best option right now, but amazingly people stick to whatsapp or telegram. - creators of Session

Well, finally got a Matrix server up and running so our podcast community can flee Discord. Stress testing ongoing.

It's been a bumpy ride, but at least we own the car now.

Well I'm now selfhosting a #matrix homeserver with "continuwuity", a fork of conduwuit, a fork of conduit. I'm @tj:howse.social.

There was some degree of Caddy arcanery getting mastodon and matrix hosted on the same domain, but nothing's broken too badly yet. 🤞

P.S. I love Caddy. The most sane webserver configuration schema I've encountered.

Content warning:Discord & Matrix

I actively avoided Discord for most of my life and started using it when I went back to school a few years ago (as my class had it's own server). I haven't really used it after graduation. I just learned a bunch of people are jumping ship, because of a Discord controversy, to Matrix.

Matrix is cool and all, being decentralized, open source, and self-hostable. What's not cool though is the majority if not all of these people switching are jumping onto the main instance (matrix.org). This is just as problematic as a bunch of people coming to Mastodon/Fediverse but joining mastodon.social.

Also it's bloated compared to IRC (I know, everything is compared to IRC, so not fair), or XMPP. I hosted my own Matrix once. It was a single user instance and it would choke trying to keep messages synced from channels on other servers. I wasn't in that many either. You can find threads on the performance and scalability already with a simple search.

It's very cool software that would work well in an enterprise environment, but it's not really suited for us mere mortals trying to self host on simple servers, at least if you want to federate with other servers. You can have it be isolated among your friends or company or whatever, and it will be solid but federation is a huge feature to exclude for the sake of performance.

Matrix as it stands is not a suitable replacement for Discord unless each community is willing to host their own and be willing to pay the costs for beefy hardware in order to federate properly. Either that or all be in their own isolated instances which takes away one of the coolest (if it worked) features.

I'm on Stoat, Fluxer, Matrix and Slack, but the main reason I'm on Discord is that I help run and moderate two sizable communities. I could create an alternative for one of them elsewhere, but it would be quite hard to maintain both at once, so for now it's just about keeping the door open for migrating if it comes to that.

💥 Discord Exodus Begins

「 Unlike Discord, Matrix is federated. You don't have to use their main server. You can spin up your own homeserver on a Raspberry Pi or rent a VPS in a country that doesn't demand your ID card to send a meme.

The trade-off? The user experience is still... rough. 」

Want to join #Matrix? Great idea! It’s a decentralised, open standard based, democratically managed, end-to-end encrypted, full featured instant messaging network.

👉 Do you want to self-host your server? See github.com/element-hq/ess-helm to get a full stack (incl. calls, OIDC, Web client, admin console etc.)

👉 Do you want to pay for a ready-to-use server? See matrix.org/ecosystem/hosting/.

👉 Do you want to join an existing server? See servers.joinmatrix.org/.

My favourite client: element.io/en/download

Hmm, just thinking about my move away from Discord... Biggest problem outside of finding a Matrix server to join is finding folks to chat with. I've already got an account somewhere, but don't have anyone to actually chat with, or I don't know of any social spaces that I'd be welcome to join at the moment. #Matrix #Privacy #e2emessaging

Does Fluffychat allow you to back up messages? I can't figure out how to do this and my homeserver is shutting down in a week 😢

Any fluffychatters out there know how to back up messages?
