With all of the #discord news last week, I've been looking at self-hosting a #matrix server. I ordered a thin-client and we'll be trying things out. It's going to be a tough sell to get my friends on matrix, they like the ease that discord provides- and everything is already set up! why move?

So in case you ever have one #Matrix client in the login process, don't start a verification.
I had this:
FluffyChat: Logged in (verified)
Element Web: Logged in but stuck before entering recovery key
Element X: Trying to log in and verify
1 - Element X requests verification
2 - FluffyChat and Element Web (?!) ask if they should accept
3 - Accept in FluffyChat
4 - Element Web opens verification window (?!?), FluffyChat waits endlessly
5 - Verify
6 - Both Elements now stuck.
Total chaos.

Cinny est le meilleur presque son début, et il est toujours de mieux en mieux à chaque ré-essai.
Deux points qui me chagrinent :
* je veux mes bulles de messages réparties à gauche et droite pour différencier mes messages de ceux des autres,
* Les messages des threads ne sont pas séparés de la conversation. C’est abscons.

Damn, I only recently found out (after watching a very interesting video on YouTube) that in the recent 4K re-release of “The Matrix,” they changed the color grading, and the picture resembles old films from the 60s. It turns out that it was based on a rare theatrical version, which was released in this format and shown in only 150 cinemas. I highly recommend checking it out, it looks unique

I just got my band set up on a #selfhosted #Matrix / #Element. This is controversial for a number of reasons - but I'm comfortable doing the grunt work to make it happen in a way I can live with.
For my non-techie friends coming over, it's close enough and they picked it right up. Our needs are basic and are covered.
I realise this will not fit everyone's needs, and it's a sprawling project choked with #enshittification at the moment, but if you can sift down through it all, you might find something that works. (Not very encouraging - I know. I'm sorry - it's a little dire out there.)
Another alternative that I run is #xmpp. It's less like discord than most Matrix clients, but it's fast and light - time tested and has e2ee.
There is also #NextCloud Talk. I don't use it much, but it works as well as xmpp or matrix in my experience.
