I often post positive stuff about @matrix here, for the same reason I'm bullish about ActivityPub. Decentralisation FTW!

But I do share the concerns about the dominant position of @element Inc. within Matrix Foundation, and the reliance on its staff for flagship software and protocol development. Especially with Element being UK-based, making it subject to Patriot Act style spying laws passed in the UK in recent years. See;

Anyone trying to use a Matrix space to replace their Miscord "server" Getting frustrated with the limitations of ElementX, with minimalist, IM-like design and limited support for spaces?

What you need is something more like Element classic, in which rooms and spaces are first-class citizens in the interface, and DMs are more of an add-on. SchildiChat might be better for your mobile Matrix needs (although it's a bit slower) or SchildiNext (faster but more IM-like).

We've just released Continuwuity v0.5.5. Continuwuity is a chat server for communities that speaks Matrix - and as you can probably guess we've exploded in popularity over the past week or two. The amount of people in our community rooms doubled!

This release is mostly about bugfixes, but there are two things to get excited about. The first is that the last blocker for calling in the Element X mobile apps has been squished! If you've set up the prerequisite service, you can now make calls from your phone.

The other is that we've greatly improved the first run experience - registering a first account is easier, and contexual help is presented where possible.

I would heavily encourage reading the changelog, and upgrading. Again, welcome to all of our new community members!

Why not Signal?

As people move away from Discord for reasons that will become obvious in a few days as it begins requiring facial or government ID to continue using it, we need to seriously consider alternatives. Most people seem to be moving to Signal, which strikes me as odd, because not only is it probably the least secure option for people who care about security, it is also feature-starved in comparison to alternatives.

Signal is almost definitely being hawked to the public. It is no coincidence that it is used by the US government, touted by Elon Musk, supported by the CIA, and centralized in the United States.

Matrix is far more feature-rich, and does not contain these issues. While its protocol is built and maintained by a foundation with historical ties to the US and Israel, it is a protocol built on an open standard, like email. It is the most secure and well-supported option out there; SimpleX is in its infancy, and XMPP has glaring security problems in regard to how separate clients treat security, and the fact that it only is capable of encrypting message data (not ie file transfers).

I have, until the last few days, been more laissez-faire about what people choose, as long as it's some E2E option, but as Discord is now drawing a line in the sand and we potentially approach another exodus moment like we did from Skype, those of us in the know about these things need to draw our own line: You need to use Matrix. Find or host a server that does not require you to enter identifying information. workersofthe.world hosts one locally in Canada; if you want in, send me a message. Otherwise, using the default matrix.org server is secure enough for now to get you accustomed to the software and user experience.

The real risk, once we get away from #Discord, is having people attached to #Signal, which seems inevitably will be used as a honeypot, documenting your phone number and usage rates, and potentially shifting the bar for encryption standards the way Telegram did. You need to consider #Matrix instead.

Someone here said I should try #Matrix using the main matrix.org instance (which apparently is currently bombarded with registrations?) and Element X because of all the issues I have, and instead of ranting on here to properly write them down.

This was about 15 to 20 minutes in. Some of them are minor and a matter of changing text or up to debate if it's even an issue, but mind the existence of a dark pattern and… well, here you go. I didn't even try Spaces yet. Or let alone the old Element.

Smart people:

When element for desktop says:

Store your cryptographic identity and message keys securely on the server. This will allow you to view your message history on any new devices.

Do they mean on THEIR server? Or will it be stored on MY server if I'm using my own #matrix #synapse instance?

Fellow Homelabbers, has anyone of you any experience running an IPv6 only Matrix / Synapse Server and could tell me if there any noticeable limitations apart from homeservers not beeing reachable via IPv6 in 2026?

Currently using #dendrite as my matrix home server, however I'm aware it's under very little development now and missing many new features, is there a way for me to move my homeserver to #synapse or a different implementation without losing the domain or chat history? #matrix #matrixadmin
