I use the #Matrix ecosystem (self-hosted) every day with my family and it's pretty reliable, so thanks for the hard work!
It doesn't come without a few annoyances, though, and ElementX was, in my views, promoted when it was still too unstable, which might explain why users have turned away from it and are now reluctant to give it another chance (it's my experience at least).
(Very) long version:
Well I've been a happy admin+user of #XMPP (Prosody+Conversations, mostly) for probably a good 10 years now, with only family use. I started looking for alternatives because audio/video was not too reliable (not that we often use it anyway, but you know family...) and settled with #Matrix (Synapse+Element), with its fancier UI and its more mature iOS and desktop clients (used by my children).
I'm happy now with both ecosystems, mainly using Element on mobile with Conversations (XMPP) as backup.
I have to admit Matrix's key management system is not good from an admin and user perspective, however, as it doesn't work well (the infamous "cannot decrypt" messages) and is not clear at all in the first place. As we are not changing devices often, it's fortunately not too much of a problem for us.
The Windows desktop client has one incredibly annoying issue, it always has to be reset after my son's W11 computer restarts for some reason. Didn't look into it much, there might be a solution, but regular upgrades didn't do in a few years time. Apart from that, the experience is very close to the mobile one, and it's pretty stable.
I've been using it on Steamdeck (desktop mode) as well, but the most recent flatpak versions won't work because of a decryption-related issue. Again, no official solution in sight for this AFAIK.
As for ElementX, the last time I checked, which was around the time it was said to be ready for production and the good ol' Element was hidden away from the website, something like 6 months ago probably, it's not that it was missing features, it's more that it had a few insufferable UI bugs like the one which would have you push the back button several times with the same screen showing up, or the key management issues which wouldn't let you switch to EX without losing all history. The few negative comments I read at the time mostly related to these UI bugs. I'd therefore tend to think it was pushed as the official replacement too early, when it wasn't stable enough, and now pays the price for this bad PR move.
I didn't give it another try since, for fear of frustration mostly, and because there's no real motivation for me to move away from Element.
This is my experience with the ecosystem and doesn't mean to be anything more than this, obviously!

I've had this error tryna launch the #Element desktop #Flatpak app (#Matrix client) on #Linux ever since one of the #KDE Plasma updates, been a while now and it's still not going away. Are we supposed to wait for something, to have it fixed - or is there something we have to do that can get it fixed? Looks like an #Electron or #kwallet issue. The only workaround for now, is to use their web client.

Also, if you have any appreciation for #Matrix (or any group/person/corp working on it), please let it out and tell the world about it!
It's a bit depressing to work on the project these days, the critics are often based on good reasons ("unable to decrypt" memes should go away, tho), but overall being super negative and pessimistic about the project can only turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy and kill it.
So a bit of positivity would go a long way

The next big thing that comes to mind is Spaces (formerly known as Communities). This is also being worked on at the moment, in parallel to the thread work. So I'm rather confident it should come sooner rather than later.

I might be partial (because Element is my day job), but i'm really, honestly surprised when people say "ElementX doesn't have feature parity with older Element clients".
That said: I buy it a little better than hearing "ElementX doesn't have basic chat features", which is really bad faith; I can use ElementX instead of Telegram / WhatsApp / Signal any day of the week, for 1 to 1 conversations.
But the people's feedback and experiences are still valid. Let's recap what's missing 🧵

The brilliant part: he developed his theory to a point where it becomes a map to one's own mind, or rather to the areas we are blind to. Like the Matrix teaches us: enlightenment lies in “temet nosce”.
(This is not to say that these sides we are blind to are necessarily bad, but there is a reason shadow-work is so named.)
His work on archetypes (crudely commercially bastardized by Myers-Briggs) allows us to see blind spots in ourselves.

Finding an alteranative server was already harder than expected. I guess I'll find out more when I really "move". 🙄
