So I recently wanted to set up a private chat service, mainly because I wanted a place to get notifications from things like alertmanager, homeassistant, et al. And at first I was looking at Zulip, which looked great, but then I realised that many communities I'm part of use matrix, and so now I have my own matrix server.
Some observations:
- Setting up synapse was easier than I expected.
- The initial client UX, especially when it comes to encryption keys is painful at first, this is something I doubt normal users will ever tolerate.
- Joining channels on other servers can be insanely slow when you haven't joined anything on that server before.
- Once it works, it's a cool and ambitious way of chatting, maybe overambitious.
- The extensibility is pretty cool, reminds me of things like bitlbee.
- It's nice to be able to join community channels of Fedora and c-base without having to have an account on their servers.
All in all, now that the initial pain is over, I enjoy it, but I never see it going mainstream with the current UX. If you want to chat, hit me up, I'm @ainmosni:ainmosni.eu

There were stats involved when I was put into the #matrix bred to believe in the system. But there is always a preferred finite clause on resources and talent. The word here talent and getting picked, politics messed with making the right picks. Now, the USA corp deliberately experiments.

Bei manuellen Umzug, sprich neuer Account auf neuem Server muss folgendes getan werden.
Im alten Account unter
Alle Einstellungen >
Verschlüsselung >
Schlüssel exportieren
(Am besten im keepass ein ordentliches Passwort zum sichern einrichten und exportieren.
Das geht nur bei Element, Schildi und Fluffychat haben die Optionen nicht.
In einem zweiten browserfenster oder zweiten APP den neuen Account anlegen, beide verifizieren, und mit dem alten Account den neuen Account in jeden Chat und Raum hinzufügen.
Hier ist zu beachten, wenn man Armin war, dieses Recht auch den Neuen zu übertragen.
Jetzt in der zweiten APP/Fenster den vorher exportierten Schlüssel unter Einstellungen >
Verschlüsselung >
Schlüssel IMportieren und das Passwort wieder rausuchen.
Nochmal kurz die Räume checken und dann die Schlüssel und das Passwort wieder löschen.
Umzug geschafft. Fertig. Zum Tätowierer und die Anleitung festhalten fürs nächste mal.😃

Out of curiosity I looked at the different client options highlighted on #Matrix's website, and apparently my choices are Element (the original), something that doesn't support Spaces, something that doesn't support Threads, or something that doesn't support anything. This ecosystem is wild.

-WA muss seit letztem Jahr Interoperabilität anbieten. Jedoch zu deren Bedingungen... 😐
