Computer Networks Group
The Computer Networks Group researches and develops distributed infrastructure for secure communication and computation at all levels of the networking stack. Our past activities include work on sensor networks, autonomic operations of networks, bio- and chemically-inspired networking, as well as mobile code. Currently our main focus is on survivable computing.
The aim of the P2P Basel workshop is to bring together researchers and software builders to share insights and collaborate towards the sound and sustainable development of efficient eventually-consistent (offline-first) peer-to-peer systems. Examples of related projects of interest are Secure #Scuttlebutt , DAT/Hypercore , Cabal , #Tox, BitMessage , #IPFS , Socket Supply co., #OrbitDB , Earthstar , Willow , #Nostr , #Holochain , #P2Panda , #GNUnet , #Hyphanet , #Freenet , #Zeronet , #Retroshare , #NextGraph , #Web3 , #serverless , #maidsafe , #matrix , Other P2P projects that are based on stronger consistency models, such as Mass Market are also of interest.

I was reading this article [https://www.onepict.com/20250628-plussustain.html] on Matrix as I finally started using the service this past month. I had seen a post, talking about the idea of dismantling Matrix and starting from scratch, and have heard others talk about it as an unmoderated mess.
Happy to report that my experiences using Matrix have been absolutely rock solid. I have used Element, Thunderbird, and now Fractal as clients and having this new messaging system has been a real eye opener to me. So much so that, by October, I definitely plan to start sponsoring with an individual membership.
For background: the messaging system I used growing up was Skype and Mumble. Outside of that, I had to use text messages. I never really got into FOSS until much later in my life, pretty much the last 3 years, but the importance of these decentralized systems have been eye-opening. Every time Discord updates and changes their UI, it becomes more and more irriating to use.
I still think Matrix has a long way to get most of my circle to join - be it streaming to friends who do Art or want to host a watch party, but I honestly think that the community should come together to lift Matrix up, rather than fighting over making a new system. Currently, Matrix seems to work pretty damn well and using its base and building on top of that is the best way forward.

Als der Film "#Matrix" rauskam, hatte ich ein Problem. Und mit dieser #Game-#KI ist es ähnlich: Man muss viiiel mehr in das #System hinein stecken, als man heraus bekommt.
In Matrix wurden Maschinen zur Lebenserhaltung und zur geistigen Beschäftigung der Menschen in einer #Simulation betrieben. Dass die #Energie dafür aus eben diesen Menschen kommen sollte, verstößt gegen den #Energieerhaltungssatz. Schlechte Prämisse für den #Film...

People really need to just avoid #Discord. Use #Matrix and Element if you need multimedia Discord like features. #Reddit has a lot of the same phylogenetic and vestigial cultural artifacts and patterns as #4chan, and many Reddit subs use #Discord as their communities. Because server invites propagate via peers, behavioral patterns and clusters similar to #4chan spread rapidly.
Considering the "filters" people have to pass through and the checks they have to continually pass, it is a cesspool.
