1. #Stoat - Formerly Revolt: Client works good, server is downloadable, client can't connect to unofficial servers. Oops. They're working on it.
2. #Matrix: Good federation (that's the point), missing features people care about like custom emoji, good VOIP (in progress)
3. #Mumble: Sadly only a piece of the puzzle, but great VOIP
4. #Teamspeak: Tries, but a UX nightmare.
X. #Zulip/#Spacebar: Still looking at these.

I think this blog posts really highlights not only the need for more decentralization within #matrix but also the need to fight back against these #ageverification laws across all jurisdictions; the more we lose, the more normalized these measures will become.
now if only account portability was a thing…

Account portability would be a great thing. Mastodon's portability isn't perfect, it has some notable limitations, but it's nice you can at least take a number of things with you across servers as your needs dictate.
People need to be able to move around. No system should be a prison, and platforms where we can move if we need to are exactly what the world needs right now.

Long shot, but question to anybody who knows, re #matrix, bots and access tokens. I want to send a message to a room using an HttpRequest from C#, which needs room id, url and access token from an account (I've made a "bot" account for that purpose).
But the access token of my "bot" account seems to have changed within 24h. How could such bot-posting functionality work for, well, longer amounts of time? Or do I approach this incorrectly?

Any Discord regulars out there who are also on Matrix and reasonably happy with it? Or ar least still willing to persevere with it, in the hopes the recent improvements will continue as the Matrix 2.0 spec changes are finalized and rolled out.
How about we set up a room for the portion of the Discord exodus who are choosing Matrix? To provide handholding about available apps and resources, and coordinate feedback to Matrix devs about to improve the UX for these folks?

Watching a Youtube video rn about moving away from #Discord to something #FOSS (#Matrix 's #Element ) . It's a great video... BUT, it really underlines some big issues with attitudes toward #UX and #UI in #tech circles.
He said: "you can't customise your profile with kawai pictures and emojis, but who gives a crap about that".
I get it. Priorities should be on privacy. But the fact is: this stuff IS important to people. Also, why _cant_ we have that? (cont)

@tony Try FluffyChat - I find it a much more functional client. And for the server I use Conduit, which is light and fast.
#Matrix is great. Element X and Synapse have issues which, it seems, can only be resolved in large scale deployments with lots of sysadmin support, like those in many European governments.

Dear #fediverse my home #matrix server is going offline soon. Is self hosting viable ? I'm thinking my family and friends I would trust on such a thing would be like 12-16 people maybe. I am self hosting alot of different things for personal use but I hear it can be a bit resource intensive. Is this something I should toss on Hetzner or something then? Trying to figure it out. Might host a mastodon alongside itis that a horrible idea? Open to thoughts on the matter #selfhosting The server has 64g of ram and 2-300g of space I'm willing to allocate to it.
