Today, I'm going to talk about passive-aggressive spam on the Fediverse.
As someone who works at META (Facebook), I encounter this kind of behavior often. Passive-aggressive spam usually looks like someone jumping into a conversation — not to contribute — but to subtly promote their own product, service, or website.
For example, you might be talking about your cat, and suddenly someone replies with something like, "That reminds me, I found amazing deals on cat treats over at my site!" They might not post a direct URL, but the message is clearly promotional. These posts are often supported by a few dummy accounts that quickly like the comment to create a false sense of credibility.
Today, I saw an example of this on the Fediverse (see screenshot). No one brought up this person’s website. No one was speaking to them directly. No one was talking about them, either. Their reply wasn’t really about my post — it was clearly an attempt to promote their own Fediverse instance, complete with a self-branded hashtag.
Unlike traditional platforms, the Fediverse doesn't have an algorithm to push posts. Instead, content needs to be boosted by other users to gain visibility. In this case, the user employed another site — with zero active users (see screenshot) — to boost their own post. The boosting account was created just yesterday (see screenshot), making the intent even more obvious.
The domains involved in this scheme are fuckass.space and darkestalleygang.lol .
This is spam — just dressed up as conversation.

Nicht so ganz geplanter und irgendwie seltsamer Nebeneffekt des ActivityPub-Wordpress-Plugins (oder meiner älteren Blog-Installation): wenn ich meine eigenen Blogartikel hier - ikn meinem Account, nicht in dem des Blogs - poste, meint ActivityPub, dafür eine Quote-Berechtigung einfordern zu müssen. Was manchmal klappt, manchmal nicht - und ich wüsste nicht, wo ich das im Wordpress-Plugin einstelle. Hm. #activitypub #wordpress

@pfefferle is there a way to understand when posts published on #Wordpress using your #ActivityPub plugin get distributed to followers? I guess you are using wp-cron for that?
Would visualizing the outbox queue be something in the roadmap already? For sake of better understanding the magic between federation a bit better.

Wie an den Daten unschwer zu erkennen ist, ist der Plan für ein kleines, feines Blog nicht ganz neu. Nun werde ich es mal angehen. Übrigens ist der Zettelspieß an sich gar nicht neu. Es gab ihn schon früher - bis 2018. Ich habe ihn aufgegeben, als uns allen diese grüne Kopfgeburt DSGVO übergestülpt wurde. Bis auf weiteres bleibt der Pivit bestehen, wird aber wohl eingefroren. That’s the best dichotomy of my social media habits as well though. I’m on pretty much every platform that exists (and a bunch that don’t anymore) and yet I don’t really engage that often with them.
Though I have essentially boiled my socials down to #ActivityPub based networks at this point.

There is one true, universal standard on the Fediverse:
1) Nazis are not welcome or tolerated — ever.
No matter which platform you use — Mastodon, Misskey, PixelFed, PeerTube, or any of the many others — you’re part of a larger, connected network. And in that network, Nazis are removed quickly and decisively.

Since the influx of Blue Sky and Twitter users, Mastodon Dot Social had unfortunately — but temporarily — experienced a few Nazi accounts, all of which have since been removed. However, a few individuals are now wrongfully claiming that the Fediverse is no different, simply because a few bad individuals managed to make it here.
What they’re choosing to ignore is the key difference: those accounts were dealt with and rightfully removed. The fact that they weren’t caught immediately does not support the implications being made. 🙄
Haters are going to hate. 🤷

Ok, so it's been awhile, but I have a serious question to my follows.
What's the best in current "tiny but public" Mastodon servers, because I'm wondering if there's a better solution for interacting with the Fedi vs then a stack that goes "NOM" resources with regularity.
I'd also like a platform that doesn't have to such complicated functionality as quotes be something that exist in a side branch for years.
