Bluesky, Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter might be full of garbage, but when someone is clearly running a scam — especially with solid proof — those platforms usually take action.

The Fediverse is different. Even if you have proof (photos, videos, etc.) that someone is scamming people, calling them out can get you in trouble. The scammer? They might get sympathy instead.

That's a massive loophole — and scammers know exactly how to exploit it.

Bluesky, Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter might be full of garbage content, but at least when someone is clearly running a scam — especially if you have solid proof — those platforms usually do something about it.

But on the Fediverse, things work differently. If you try to expose a scammer, people might say you’re being cruel or hurting someone who might actually need help. So even obvious scams get protected, just in case.

That’s a huge loophole — and scammers know exactly how to use it.

The Fediverse has a scammer problem.

Even if you have proof — photos, videos, whatever — that someone is a scammer, your post can still disappear just for calling them out.

Right now, I could easily rejoin the Fediverse, post a heartfelt message claiming I need help, and no one could challenge me on my bullshit — while I rake in kickbacks as easy money.

It “only” took me a few years to find out that I don’t need to have a PeerTube or Lemmy account to interact with them; I just need to copy/paste the link in Mastodon search and then follow or reply.

Why no one is saying this little detail FIRST to all the n00bs coming from the Horror socials? After this you can explain the fediverse; Now Activity Pub makes so much sense to an atechnical person.

post (@post@activitypub.space)

@nutomic@lemmy.ml reported a federation issue with a NodeBB instance and we debugged it. It turns out Lemmy is unable to handle actors who have image or icon set to null.

Lemmy is taking steps to handle this (source, source), and NodeBB will update its actor logic to omit properties without an avatar or cover photo set.

#OpenScience and the #fediverse .. let's get that ball rolling 💪

@jfietkau @jonny and @bonfire opened a brainstorm and evaluation on how we can provide better support for the academic world and #science in general to the #ActivityPub-based fediverse.

Various different iniitiatives are underway, and there's great opportunity to bundle forces and align these efforts where possible. Set standards.
