Unsolicited Programming Suggestion (#UPS): always consider if you've got the right tool for the problem. Example: I was writing a #Python app that needed to import a #Lua file containing a data structure – a tree built using tables, like this:
DATA = {
["node1.1"] = {
["node2.1"] = some_value,
["node2.2"] = other_value,
},
["node1.2"] = {
etc. etc. The structure had several thousand nodes.
My first attempt: oh, there is this luadata Python module, I can use it!
… parsing my Lua file took several seconds. Not microseconds. Not milliseconds. Seconds. On my Ryzen 7 9700X.
Then I noticed that structure is essentially the same as the Python dict I'm going to build, modulo syntactic details, so maybe just use regexp to convert the syntax to pythonic:
{
"node1.1" : {
"node2.1" : some_value,
"node2.2" : other_value
},
and then parse it using ast.literal_eval() (for security reasons I didn't want to simply use eval instead of ast's parser, as the Lua file came from external source). Wow, much faster, ~0.2 s, but still…
Then it dawned on me – convert to #JSON and use json.loads(). Apparently, json's parser is more efficient than ast's parser because JSON syntax is much simpler than generalized Python literal syntax. Got down to 20 ms, something I can live with.

@KurtKettler der "Nachteil" bei vielen alternativen, sicheren Messengern ist halt, dass Du aktiv Deine Kontakte suchen, finden, hinzufügen musst. #DeltaChat und #Matrix bieten Dir z.B. keine Suche über Telefonnummern im Adressbuch. Threema bietet das optional - aber die wenigsten haben dort eine Telefonnummer zum gefunden werden hinterlegt.
Signal durch seinen Rufnummernzwang macht es ein da natürlich sehr einfach über das Adressbuch Kontakte automatisch zu finden.
Vorteil gegenüber WhatsApp ist, dass Matrix die Telefonnummer nur als Hashwert an den Server abfragt und nicht dein komplettes Telefonbuch mit allen Daten hoch geladen wird. Die Funktionsweise ist da auf jeden Fall etwas sympatischer.

Irgendwie glaube ich, dass Doomscrolling etwas mit unseren Accounteinrichtungen zu tun hat bzw. mit der Anzeige neuer Nachrichten. Entgegen der Annahme, die großen Plattformen würden negative News besonders befeuern, was ja im Grunde unterstellt, eine KI könne beurteilen, was wir als negative News bewerten und sie dann autark pushen, sorgen Algorithmen im Grunde nur dafür - abhängig von der Programmierung -, dass Beiträge mit viel Interaktion höher gewichtet werden. Das ist auch gut und richtig. Was die negativen News nach oben schraubt, ist nicht der Algorithmus, sondern unsere Interaktionen, die mit unserer Empörung verbunden sind. Der Mensch will es lieber der KI in die Schuhe schieben, dass er emotional nicht kontrolliert ist. Wenn wir aber ständig unsere Apps aufmachen und sehen "Ah, da sind wieder neue Beiträge", scrollen wir nach unten, weil wir lesen wollen, was alles in unserer Abwesenheit geschrieben wurde. Wir rutschen so ins Doomscrolling. Bei manchen Plattformen im Fediverse habe ich einen langsamen Modus gesehen oder die Möglichkeit, die Timeline umzukehren und gleichzeitig beim Starten der App an der gleichen Position zu sein, an der ich die App zugemacht habe. D.h., ich verpasse nichts, sondern kann ganz in Ruhe nach oben scrollen und alles abarbeiten.

While I would like #Mastodon to be far more established in society than it currently is, I don't think religiously looking at the MAU metrics is particularily helpful in that regard. There is no direct monetary motivation behind its distribution, so nobody even cares for precise numbers. I fully expect the quality of these metrics to be off by an order of magnitude due to the lack of motivation for spending the effort. That nonwithstanding, everybody joining up is a win! If you're new: Welcome!
