"Following the US’s invasion of Venezuela on January 3 and abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, President Trump promised to “restore prosperity” to the country. His administration has now recognized the Delcy Rodríguez government and issued general licenses to ease sanctions on oil and mineral production, as well as licenses to disburse the proceeds from US-managed sales of Venezuelan oil. These measures have raised hopes that stability might be returning to an economy long stifled by Washington’s siege. But a key factor in any process of stabilization has so far been overlooked: the fortunes of the Banco Central de Venezuela (BCV).
In 2005, amid escalating tensions, the George W. Bush administration began to consider the use of sanctions against Venezuela, announcing an arms embargo the following year. A decade later, President Obama declared a “national emergency” with respect to Venezuela, deemed the country an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US national security, and imposed sanctions on various state officials, explicitly naming the BCV as a part of the government. In 2019, the Trump administration went further, refusing to recognize the Maduro administration, removing its Federal Reserve certification and sanctioning the BCV as a part of its “maximum pressure” campaign to foment regime change.
The central bank sanctions and decertification of the BCV affected Venezuela’s entire economy and caused widespread suffering among its population. BCV is not just a government bank. As in most countries, it is a bank of banks for the public and private sector alike, acting as the “clearinghouse of the financial system.” Sanctions against a central bank therefore not only target the incumbent administration; they incapacitate the country’s entire financial infrastructure. Lifting them will be essential for Venezuela to recover."

The Revolutionary Guard’s media arm includes production studios, film collectives, cultural centers, university programs, and a vast infrastructure for training successive generations of media-makers that first came into existence in the late 1980s. In the years following the Arab Spring, the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei repeatedly instructed Iranian storytellers to treat media as its primary battlefield. “The media is more effective than missiles, planes and drones in forcing the enemy to retreat and to influence hearts and minds,” Khamenei said in 2024 at a meeting with a group of poets. “All war is a media war. Whichever actor has greater media influence will achieve their goals.” Over the past 15 years, Khamenei made sure sufficient money, talent, and institutional priority flowed toward digital content creation. Today the IRGC operates or funds at least 50 production houses. It runs Iran’s major streaming services. It has steadily monopolized the country’s film world. Its media conglomerates have subsidiaries and spinoffs that are deliberately difficult to trace — privatized, diversified, structured so that the fingerprints are hard to read from outside. Several production houses specialize in feature-length films and television serials. Others, the ones that matter most right now, are small, fast, and built for the internet, made by a new generation coming to power in Iran as American-Israeli bombs kill off the elder leaders — one that is younger, savvier, and less afraid of the U.S."

The takeaway: Be wary of freebies. Our investigation into Microsoft’s seemingly straightforward commitment revealed a more complex, profit-driven agenda. After installing the upgrades, federal customers would be effectively locked in, because shifting to a competitor after the free trial would be cumbersome and costly. At that point, the customer would have little choice but to pay for the higher subscription fees. The plan worked: One former Microsoft salesperson told me “it was successful beyond what any of us could have imagined.”

I ended up downgrading the version of nodejs on my #peertube server, mainly because the repo I was using to pull node v22 from was returning strange keyring errors, so I removed it. I did not add that repository myself, but rather it was included when I spun up the original peertube instance from my hosting provider.
On the one hand, using the pre-baked server setup saved me a bunch of time originally, but I believe it did add more work for me over the longer term.

Short term gains come at a cost of deepening conflicts they seek to resolve. Actions in Gaza & Lebanon risk embedding anger, loss and resentment across generations, creating conditions for future instability rather than lasting peace. What appears as deterrence today becomes tomorrow’s escalation.
For Israeli’s, it may mean a prolonged state of tension, where cycles of violence repeat and genuine stability remains out of reach. Internationally, such policies also erode support and gradually isolate Israel, weakening alliances that underpin its security.
To secure the future through force, Netanyahu has probably narrowed it, leaving a legacy of hardened divisions, few paths to peace, & conflit for years after he’s gone.
