hey so this is probably completely pointless but: looking for a job (NZ or fully remote willing to hire a kiwi) in SRE, security, or linux/Unix system administration. 15 years expereince administering Linux and Unix boxes, intermediate level of experience working with docker compose and containerisation and container security. No prior job experience unfortunately, all those 15 years were mostly personal projects and small-scale stuff for friends. Currently running an entire multi-machine personal cloud infrastructure with a demonstration of all the services I have running at https://status.highenergymagic.net. Als die Suchtexpertin Anne Wilkening vor 20 Jahren anfing, Vorträge an Schulen zu halten, ging es um Nikotin. Dann folgten Alkohol und Cannabis. Seit etwa 10 Jahren macht Medienkonsum den Hauptteil ihrer Aufklärungsarbeit aus.
Sie beraten an Schulen zu Drogen- und Medienkonsum. Was haben die gemeinsam?
Unter Suchtforschern wird nicht mehr unterschieden, ob etwas körperlich oder psychisch abhängig macht. Die Entzugserscheinungen und Schwierigkeiten damit aufzuhören, sind sehr ähnlich. Die Forschung zeigt, dass auf bestimmte Apps oder Spiele derselbe Bereich im Gehirn reagiert, der uns nach Drogen süchtig macht.
Was genau passiert im Gehirn?
Unser Gehirn schüttet dabei Dopamin aus. Dieser Botenstoff ist Teil des Belohnungssystems und beeinflusst unsere Stimmung. Dieser “Spaßmacher” wird auch ausgeschüttet, wenn wir schöne Erlebnisse mit Menschen haben. Aber beim Drogen- oder Medienkonsum um ein Vielfaches mehr. Das ist, was unser Gehirn abhängig und uns süchtig macht. Das ist, warum sich unser Gehirn immer öfter fürs Handy oder die Spielekonsole entscheidet, statt für ein Treffen mit echten Menschen.
Ist der gestiegene Medienkonsum also ein Grund dafür, dass Depressionen bei Kindern und Jugendlichen zugenommen haben?
Wir sind immer noch dabei herauszufinden, woher Ängstlichkeit und Depressionen kommen. Aber eine Sache, die durch die Corona-Lockdowns besonders auffällig wurde: Je weniger wir Zeit mit echten Menschen verbringen, desto mehr nehmen Ängstlichkeit und Depressivität bei Kindern zu. Und wenn Medienkonsum dazu führt, dass wir uns immer seltener mit Freunden treffen, und selbst wenn wir sie treffen, uns nicht mehr richtig auf sie einlassen, weil wir ständig am Handy sind, dann führt das zu Vereinsamung, selbst wenn man zusammen ist. Deswegen ist es eine sehr wichtige Maßnahme, dass Schulen handyfreie Zonen sind.
Sie warnen besonders vor Social Media. Wie gefährlich sind TikTok & Co?
Social Media, besonders TikTok und Instagram, haben ein extremes Suchtpotenzial – Fachexperten sagen, dass es vergleichbar ist mit dem Suchtpotenzial der Droge Kokain. Es kann eine wirkliche Abhängigkeit entstehen, bei der man komplett die Kontrolle darüber verliert, wie viel Zeit man damit verbringt und nicht aufhören kann.
Sind Sie für ein Social-Media-Verbot für unter 16-jährige?
Absolut. Abgesehen vom extremen Suchtpotenzial hat Social Media alarmierende Auswirkungen auf die psychische und körperliche Gesundheit. Und einen riesigen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Gehirne der Kinder, wenn es um die Erwartungen an das eigene Aussehen und das Aussehen anderer geht. In der Forschung zum Thema wird immer wieder betont: Es ist nicht möglich, sich nicht zu vergleichen. Und wenn mir ständig – mit Filtern geschönte oder komplett KI-generierte – makellose Gesichter und Körper präsentiert werden, mit makellosen Leben, in tollen Wohnungen mit tollen Partnern, dann ist es fast unmöglich sich damit nicht zu vergleichen. Und zu denken: Warum ist mein Leben nicht so attraktiv? Warum kann ich nicht so makellos, dünn oder faltenfrei sein? Da werden toxische Standards aufgebaut, die niemand erfüllen kann und die dazu führen können, dass Menschen immer unglücklicher werden.
Viele Studien zeigen einen direkten Zusammenhang zwischen Social Media und den zugenommenen Essstörungen bei Kindern und Jugendlichen.
Es gibt eine aktuelle Studie, die hat gezeigt, was passiert, wenn 12–14jährige Teenager nur zwei bis vier Wochen auf Social Media verzichten. Es gab drei Haupteffekte: Der erste war, dass sich das Selbstbild verbesserte. Die Kinder fingen an, sich wieder wohler in ihrer Haut zu fühlen, sie nahmen sich positiver wahr, fanden sich hübscher. Der zweite Effekt war, dass sich Ängstlichkeit und Depressivität deutlich reduzierten. Und der dritte: Die Fähigkeit, sich für andere Dinge außerhalb von Social Media zu begeistern und Aufmerksamkeit aufzubauen und zu halten, nahm zu.
„Medienkonsum darf nicht dazu führen, dass man immer mehr Zeit allein verbringt.“
Für die Aufmerksamkeit gelten kurze Videos besonders problematisch.
Je kürzer die Videos und je mehr man davon hintereinander guckt, umso schwieriger wird es für das Gehirn, Aufmerksamkeit zu halten, wenn es mit Inhalten konfrontiert wird, die länger als ein paar Sekunden anhalten. Zum Beispiel 45 Minuten Unterricht. Es gibt immer mehr Schüler, für die es unmöglich ist, sich länger als ein paar Sekunden auf eine Sache zu konzentrieren. Und wenn man ständig mit neuen Inhalten konfrontiert wird, aber niemals Zeit hat, das auch zu verarbeiten und abzuspeichern, führt es dazu, dass Dinge nicht nur nicht gelernt, sondern andere Dinge sogar gelöscht werden.
Studien aus mehreren Ländern zeigen, dass die kognitiven Fähigkeiten unserer Kinder massiv abgenommen haben. Digitale Reizüberflutung könnte eine zentrale Ursache sein.
Ja, und es gibt noch eine zweite Sache, die dazu beiträgt: der Einsatz von KI. Dazu gibt es aktuelle Studien, die untersucht haben, was passiert, wenn man KI benutzt, anstatt Dinge selbst zu erarbeiten. Dann entsteht etwas, das nennt man kognitive Schuld – cognitive debt. Wenn wir Denkarbeit an die KI abgeben, lernt unser Gehirn nicht dazu. Um Dinge zu verarbeiten und abzuspeichern, muss unser Gehirn Denkarbeit selbst machen.
Welche Rolle spielt das Smartphone bei der Konzentrationsfähigkeit?
Verschiedene Studien zeigen, dass das Gehirn nach einer Unterbrechung, zum Beispiel durch eine Nachricht, bis zu 20 Minuten braucht, um sich wieder genauso gut auf die Aufgabe zu konzentrieren wie vorher. Und je öfter man unterbrochen wird, desto größer ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass das Gehirn diese Aufmerksamkeit nicht mehr aufbauen und halten kann. Aber selbst die bloße Anwesenheit des Handys zieht Aufmerksamkeit ab und verschlechtert die Konzentrationsfähigkeit.
Wie erklärt sich das?
Wenn man täglich viel Zeit mit seinem Handy verbringt, baut man für das Handy einen eigenen Gehirnteil – eine Repräsentation des Handys im Gehirn. Dieser Gehirnteil wird umso größer, je mehr Zeit man seinem Handy schenkt – je öfter man es anschaut, es berührt. Und dieser Gehirnteil zieht immerzu Aufmerksamkeit von anderen Tätigkeiten ab …
… und von Menschen.
Beziehungen leiden darunter – selbst zu den eigenen Kindern. Am St. Joseph Krankenhaus in Berlin hat man vor einigen Jahren geschaut, was Eltern in der ersten Stunde nach der Geburt ihrer Babys machen. Da hat sich gezeigt, dass sie ihre Babys weniger angucken und weniger Körperkontakt aufnehmen, weil sie so damit beschäftigt sind, Fotos und Videos zu machen und Nachrichten zu verschicken, um mitzuteilen, dass ihr Kind jetzt auf der Welt ist. Die Eltern schenken ihrem Handy Aufmerksamkeit statt ihren Neugeborenen. Das ist aber für die Gehirnentwicklung der Kinder problematisch, weil in den ersten zwei Stunden nach der Geburt Prozesse im Gehirn stattfinden und Stoffe ausgeschüttet werden, die für die Fähigkeit Bindung und Liebe aufzubauen entscheidend sind. Dafür wird die ungeteilte Aufmerksamkeit der Eltern benötigt, vor allem Blick- und Körperkontakt.
Sie vermitteln in Ihren Vorträgen “cleveren Medienkonsum”. Was sind die wichtigsten Formeln?
Es gibt eine Metapher, die ich gern benutze: Als Ihr Kind Fahrradfahren gelernt hat, haben Sie es anfangs festgehalten und sind mitgelaufen, dann haben Sie sich getraut, loszulassen, sind aber weiter nebenhergelaufen und dann noch jahrelang neben oder hinter Ihrem Kind hergefahren, bis Sie sich sicher waren, dass es sicher ist im Straßenverkehr. Dasselbe gilt für den Onlineverkehr. Kinder müssen lernen, wie sie sich sicher online bewegen. Dafür brauchen sie bestimmte Fähigkeiten, die das Gehirn erst ab einem bestimmten Alter lernen kann. Meine erste Empfehlung ist deshalb das eigene Smartphone fürs Kind lange hinauszuzögern – am besten nicht unter 12 Jahren – und anfangs sollten die Eltern Zugriff haben, Bildschirmzeiten begrenzen, Medienkompetenz mit den Kindern üben. Bestimmte Apps und Spiele sollten noch später kommen oder gar nicht. Die stehen auf meiner “bösen Liste” – zusammen mit WhatsApp und anderen Messengern, die uns ständig unterbrechen, und unsere Aufmerksamkeit abziehen. Meine Empfehlung dafür – und die gilt auch für alle anderen Apps – Benachrichtigungen ausstellen!
Was machen Apps und Spiele “böse”?
Die beiden Eigenschaften die Apps und Spiele gefährlich machen: Wenn sie dazu nötigen oder belohnen, sie jeden Tag zu spielen. Wenn ich Spiele nicht anhalten und abspeichern kann, wenn sie mich ständig kontaktieren und mit Belohnungen locken, wenn ich eine extra Runde spiele oder mich bestrafen, wenn ich nicht spiele. Es gibt zunehmend Kinder, so berichten mir Schulen, die nicht auf Klassenfahrt wollen, weil sie ihr Handy nicht mitnehmen dürfen, weil sie sich nicht jeden Tag um ihr Snapchat Account kümmern können, ihre Duolingo-App oder ihren digitalen Bauernhof. Und die gefährlichste Eigenschaft: Wenn mich das Spiel oder die App dazu bringt, echtes Geld zu investieren. Nichts erhöht das Suchtpotenzial mehr, als wenn man Geld investiert. Das ist Glücksspiel – eine der stärksten Süchte, die es gibt.
Gibt es auch eine “liebe Liste”?
Ja, da stehen unter anderem Spiele, bei denen man sich stark bewegt und verausgabt wie Tanz- und Sportspiele. Denn besonders gesundheitsgefährdend am Medienkonsum ist der Bewegungsmangel. Deshalb empfehle ich ein Bewegungskonto: Mindestens genauso viel Zeit, wie man inaktiv vor Maschinen rumsitzt, sollte man durch zusätzliche Bewegung ausgleichen. Und noch eine wichtige Empfehlung: So selten wie möglich allein vor Maschinen sitzen. Medienkonsum darf nicht dazu führen, dass man immer mehr Zeit allein verbringt. Das heißt, lieber Filme zusammen gucken, Spiele zusammen spielen. Das macht für das Gehirn einen riesigen Unterschied. Online zusammen spielen, wie viele Schüler mich fragen, reicht dabei nicht. Das Gehirn kann zwar durch die Kooperation auch etwas profitieren, aber der Effekt ist dramatisch besser, wenn man sich tatsächlich trifft und ein gemeinsames Erlebnis hat.
