Die Untergangsspirale brechen
Während die Pandemie fortschreitet, ist das Verweilen in den sozialen Medien nicht angenehmer geworden. Der Umgangston hat sich verschärft, die Wogen gehen ständig hoch und man wird den Eindruck nicht los, dass manche Leute das Mass völlig verloren haben.
Ich teile die Ansicht von Reda el Arbi im Blogpost Dieser «Spaltung der Gesellschaft»-Bullshit, dass es eine Minderheit ist, die die Diskussion bestimmt, weil sie sich pausenlos und immer extremer äussert.
Allerdings sehe ich auch Leute, die sich geistig in gefährliche Kaninchenbauten verkrochen haben. Das hier ist ein solches Beispiel:

Hier eine interessante Einschätzung vom bekannten forensischen Psychiater Frank Urbaniok dazu. Daraus zwei Zitate:
Das Statement enthält eher «passive Drohungen» (würde sich freuen, wenn andere … würde (erst) selbst reagieren, wenn seine Kinder angegriffen würden) – ist aber nur ein Element einer Analyse. 5. Es ist schlecht, wenn solche Leute durch Agitatoren weiter aufgehetzt werden.
Und:
Es schadet der Demokratie und ist gefährlich, wenn Politiker und andere öffentliche Person in den sozialen Medien hemmungslos diffamiert, beschimpft, bedroht und damit zur Zielscheibe gemacht werden.
Gedankenlose, fahrlässige und ignorante Postings
Das bringt das Problem auf den Punkt. Die sozialen Medien drehen ständig an der Spirale. Das Resultat ist sichtbar: Und auch wenn es, wie oben erwähnt, nur eine Minderheit ist, so ist es trotzdem erschreckend, dass es in manchen Kreisen anscheinend völlig salonfähig geworden ist, Politiker als «Problem» darzustellen, das notfalls mit Gewalt beseitigt werden darf und muss.
[caption id=“attachment_18139″ align=“alignright“ width=“176″] Wie die vielen ablehnenden Kommentare zeigen, kommen solche Nazivergleiche auch von Leuten, die längst nicht in eine Schwurbler-Bubble abgedriftet sind.[/caption]
An dieser Eskalation beteiligen sich auch Leute, die es besser wissen müssten – mit Posts, die der Sache in keinster Weise dienlich sind. Da postet einer auf Facebook die Abbildung eines Gesundheitspasses aus dem dritten Reich und schreibt dazu «Nur so zur Erinnerung. (Ich ziehe hiermit keinen direkten Vergleich!)»
Es tut mir leid, aber genau das tut er natürlich. Er fügt der Reihe der unsinnigen Nazivergleiche (siehe hier und hier) einen weiteren hinzu und stellt die Massnahmen gegen die Pandemie, die keinerlei Zwang beinhalten, auf die gleiche Stufe mit der Medizin im dritten Reich, die insbesondere Zwangssterilisationen legitimiert hat.
Wie man so etwas tun kann, wenn man – wie der Autor schreibt – Eltern hat, die unter Mussolini aufgewachsen sind, entzieht sich meinem Verständnis.
Dieser Vergleich lässt sich auch mit dem häufig bemühten Wort, man müsse den Anfängen wehren, nicht legitimieren. Er macht nämlich das Gegenteil von dem, was er vorgibt: Er reisst die Naziverbrechen aus dem Zusammenhang und entwertet die Erinnerung daran. Und genau das erhöht die Gefahr, dass sie sich wiederholen.
Wenn Amateure an rhetorischen Kniffen scheitern
Polemik, Provokation und Übertreibung sind schöne rhetorische Mittel, die man effektiv einsetzen kann. Aber es braucht Verantwortungsbewusstsein und auch ein Können, diese Mittel richtig einzusetzen.
Was wir derzeit erleben, ist eine Überbeanspruchung dieser Methoden durch Brandstifter und Amateure, die meines Erachtens auch meistens überhaupt nicht in der Lage sind, zwischen einer faktischen Aussage und einem rhetorischen Mittel zu unterscheiden. Wenn Nationalrätin Magdalena Martullo-Blocher in der NZZ todernst verkündet, der Bund habe eine Diktatur eingeführt und ihr das hinterher tausendfach nachgebetet wird, dann ist das eben keine Rhetorik mehr, sondern eine Beschädigung der Demokratie.
Ich habe früher gern auch mit völlig überzogenen Vergleichen operiert – einfach, weil es Spass macht und oft auch erhellend ist. Dieses Stilmittel werde ich mir wohl ans Bein streichen müssen.
Es gehört zu den Opfern der Pandemie, genauso, wie der einstmals positiv besetzte Begriff des Querdenkers. Wenn wir eine Chance haben wollen, die sozialen Medien wieder zu de-eskalieren und die Sachlichkeit zurückzubringen, dann müssen wir vorexerzieren, dass Dinge genauso gemeint sind, wie wir sie schreiben oder sagen – und ein Covid-Zertifikat eben nicht 𝔊𝔢𝔰𝔲𝔫𝔡𝔥𝔢𝔦𝔱𝔰𝔭𝔞𝔰𝔰 nennen, nur weil damit unser Unwohlsein mit diesem Instrument so schön zur Geltung kommt.
Die Schwurbler freundlich auf ihre Medien-Inkompetenz hinweisen
Ich denke, wir müssen noch ein paar Dinge mehr tun. Meine Erfahrung aus vielen sozialmedialen Diskussionen mit Skeptikern, Corona-Leugnern, Impfgegnern und Schwurblern hat mir gezeigt, dass es bei manchen mit der Medienkompetenz nicht weit her ist. Diese Trugschlüsse sind mir am häufigsten begegnet:
- Korrelation wird mit Kausalität verwechselt.
- Leute verbeissen sich sosehr in einzelne Unstimmigkeiten, dass sie nicht mehr in der Lage sind, das grosse Ganze wahrzunehmen.
- Zahlen und vor allem Wahrscheinlichkeiten sind für manche Leute nicht einzuordnen.
- Die eigene Betroffenheit – man könnte es härter auch den eigenen Egoismus oder die Wohlstandsverwahrlosung nennen – wird nicht hinterfragt, sondern verabsolutiert.
Diese Punkte lassen sich in der Diskussion ansprechen. Und ja, manchmal wirkt man oberlehrerhaft dabei, und man fühlt sich höchst unwohl in dieser Rolle. Aber es ist sinnvoll, die Diskussion weg von den vermeintlichen Fakten auf diese Meta-Ebene zu lenken und den Leuten ihre Methode zu reflektieren. Bei manchen habe ich auch schon die Vermutung in den Raum gestellt, dass sie ein Doomscrolling-Opfer sind – so nennt man Phänomen, wenn Leute von schlechten Nachrichten gar nicht mehr genug bekommen können. Ob es hilft? Ich weiss es nicht. Aber es scheint mir einen Versuch wert.

Solche Probleme tauchen hier und da schon mal auf, weil z. B. die Webseite (das war hier der Fall) lange Zeit nicht mehr gepflegt worden ist. Wir hatten aber im Forum auch Fälle, wo sich der Eigentümer mit dem Webseitenersteller (z. B. einer Agentur) überworfen hat oder ein Angestellter, der die Webseite gepflegt hat, nicht mehr greifbar war.

Czym naprawdę są kontenery
Prawdopodobnie każdy zainteresowany jakkolwiek tematami IT słyszał już o czymś takim jak kontenery i od razu wie, że chodzi o takie rzeczy jak docker albo kubernetes. Wiadomo, że są obrazy w repozytoriach i można je łatwo pobierać i instalować.
Kontenery przedstawiane są jako lekkie maszyny wirtualne. Taka wirtualka, która nie marnuje RAM-u na utrzymywanie całego systemu operacyjnego gościa – kilka takich “wirtualek” (kontenerów) współdzieli system operacyjny, ale zapewnia separację dla uruchamianych wewnątrz procesów.
Oprogramowanie takie jak docker (zwłaszcza z jego modułem swarm) oraz kubernetes, to całkiem spore kombajny robiące mnóstwo rzeczy, których zakres funkcjonalności przekracza znacznie sam temat uruchamiania kontenera. The Pygmy Hippopotamus is rarely seen because of their secretive, nocturnal habits and consequently not much is known of their ecology. This diminutive hippopotamus mainly inhabits lowland primary and secondary forests, close to rivers, streams and Raphia palm tree swamps sometimes being found along gallery forests extending into Transitional Woodland and the southern Guinea savanna.
Pygmy Hippos are significantly smaller than Common Hippos, standing only 70–80 cm tall at the shoulder and weighing between 180–270 kg (Saidu et al., 2022). Their compact bodies are adapted for navigating dense forests rather than open waterways. They possess smooth, hairless skin that secretes a natural mucus, acting as a protective barrier against dehydration and infection. This secretion has an unusual reddish tint, earning it the nickname “blood sweat,” though it has no connection to actual blood.
Unlike their gregarious relatives, Pygmy Hippos are solitary or found in pairs, with mothers keeping their calves hidden in secluded pools for extended periods. They are highly elusive and primarily active during twilight and nighttime hours. Camera traps in Liberia and Sierra Leone have shown that they move cautiously through forested wetlands, following well-worn trails that they mark with dung, a behaviour similar to that of their larger relatives.
Large areas of the original forest habitat, especially in Côte d’Ivoire, have been destroyed or degraded by commercial plantations of oil palm and other products, shifting cultivation, mining and logging, and hunting for bushmeat is increasing throughout the range (Mallon et al. 2011, FFI and FDA 2013).

Predators

Camera trap evidence has also captured predation by African Golden Cats Caracal aurata and African Civet in some regions. However, human activity remains their greatest existential threat.

Mining operations, road construction, and infrastructure development have further fragmented the landscape, even encroaching into protected areas like Taï and Sapo National Parks. As human settlements expand, Pygmy Hippos are forced into smaller and more fragmented patches of forest, increasing their vulnerability.
2. Hunting and the Bushmeat Trade
Pygmy Hippos are increasingly being hunted, both opportunistically and for commercial sale. While not traditionally a primary target, they are killed for bushmeat in rural areas where alternative protein sources are scarce. Reports indicate that in some regions, commercial bushmeat markets have placed additional pressure on their populations. Their skulls, bones, and other body parts are sometimes used in traditional African medicine and spiritual practices. Additionally, free-ranging domestic dogs are known to attack and kill Pygmy Hippos, particularly young or weakened individuals.
3. Habitat Fragmentation and Isolation
The destruction of forest corridors has left Pygmy Hippo populations increasingly isolated, reducing genetic diversity and increasing the risk of local extinction. Zensur zum Schutz der Meinungsfreiheit – und anderer Facebook-Unsinn
Neulich hatte ich eine Diskussion auf Facebook, die sich im weitesten Sinn um die Frage nach der Zensur in den sozialen Medien gedreht hat.
Diese Diskussion hat sich – wie häufig auf Facebook, im Kreis gedreht. Godwin’s law hat sich einmal mehr bewahrheitet. Diese Regel besagt, dass bei Diskussionen im Internet früher oder später ein Nazi-Vergleich erfolgt. In diesem Fall kam dieser Vergleich schon ganz am Anfang: Meine kleiner, spöttischer Beitrag hier, der sich mit dem Twitter-Output von Weltwoche-Chef und Nationalrat Roger Köppel beschäftigt, wurde mit folgenden Worten kommentiert:
Beginn eines Denunziantentums? Schöne neue Welt wie in der dunkelsten Zeit Deutschlands.
Nun, mit diesem Zitat dürfte auch schon deutlich werden, warum sich die anschliessende Diskussion nichts Vernünftiges hervorgebracht hat: Denn wenn eine kleine Glosse, die keinerlei inkriminierende Informationen über den Herrn Chefredaktor und Nationalrat enthält, gleichgesetzt wird mit dem Verrat an Juden, die in der Folge Ihres Besitzes beraubt und mit grosser Wahrscheinlichkeit in einem Vernichtungslager gelandet sind, dann ist das haarsträubend.
Und es ist beschämend für Leute, die derartigen Unfug von sich geben – und das in der gleichen Woche, in der viele Menschen der Befreiung des KZ Auschwitz-Birkenau gedachten. 76 Jahre ist es her, seit am 27. Januar 1945 die Rote Armee dafür gesorgt hat, dass keine Menschen mehr mit industriellen Methoden um ihr Leben gebracht worden sind.
Lohnt es sich, sich aufzuregen?
Es bleibt die Frage, ob es sich lohnt, sich darüber aufzuregen. Ich bin mir unschlüssig. Einerseits finde ich, dass solche Aussagen nicht unkommentiert bleiben dürfen. Wir müssen alle gegen die Relativierung des Holocausts angehen. Es kann nicht angehen, die Nazi-Gräuel derartig aus dem Kontext zu reissen und zu verharmlosen. Das ist ein Schlag ins Gesicht der Opfer und es spielt den Leuten in die Hände, die solches Gedankengut wieder salonfähig machen wollen.
Trotzdem würde ich in vorliegenden Fall vermuten, dass diese Aussagen einfach so dahergesagt waren. Die Widersprüche, die während der Diskussion aufgetreten sind, waren eklatant. So wollte die Frau, die diesen Streit angezettelt hatte, mir allen Ernstes verbieten, hier im Blog darüber zu berichten. Ich müsse sie im vollen Wortlaut zitieren, sonst würde Sie mir einen solchen Beitrag nicht gestatten.
Das war hochgradig paradox. Der ursprüngliche Streit drehte sich um den Vorwurf, ich würde die Meinungsfreiheit gefährden: Mein Blogpost würde – wegen Twitter-Chef Jack Dorseys Abneigung gegen gewisse politische Tweets und aufgrund neuer, geheimnisvoller KI-Mechanismen – dazu führen, dass Leute wie Köppel von Twitter verbannt werden. Mit anderen Worten: Die Frau propagiert Zensur zum Schutz der Meinungsfreiheit. Diesen Spagat muss man erst einmal hinbekommen.
Aber, um ihren Wunsch dennoch zu erfüllen, verweise ich hier auf den öffentlichen Post bei Facebook, wo jeder, der sich das antun mag, die ganze Argumentation in voller Länge nachlesen kann.
An dieser Stelle geht es mir jedoch um etwas anderes. Die Frage, wie soziale Medien mit der Meinungsfreiheit umgehen sollen und wo die Grenzen zu setzen sind, ist nicht nur berechtigt, sondern überaus wichtig. Ich setze mich für gewisse Grenzen ein.
Der Rausschmiss ist nachvollziehbar
Ich habe im Nachgang der Stürmung des Kapitols in Washington die Sperre von Trump auf Twitter und Facebook begrüsst: Trump hatte damals als US-Präsident jederzeit die Möglichkeit, sich an die Medien zu wenden und via Fernsehen seine Meinung zu transportieren. Hierzulande wurde Kantonsrat Claudio Schmid gesperrt. Wenn man seine Äusserungen im Detail ansieht, ist auch dieser Rausschmiss nachvollziehbar.
Denn meine Überzeugung ist, dass Hass keine Meinung ist. Und ja, klar, selbst Agitation muss in einem demokratischen System erlaubt sein. Doch wenn einer auf die Weise zündelt, wie es Trump getan hat – und wie es viele andere Rechtsaussen tun, dann sollten die grossen Plattformen dem ein Ende setzen.
Nun verstehe ich auch, dass es Twitter-Chef Jack Dorsey nicht wohl dabei ist, wenn er entscheiden sollte, wo die Grenzen denn genau verlaufen sollen. Ich würde mir diese Verantwortung auch nicht ans Bein binden wollen. Und die Probleme aus demokratischer Sicht sind riesig.
Zwar lebt auch das klassische Mediensystem von Gatekeepern, die bestimmen, welche Nachrichten veröffentlicht werden und welche nicht. Sie machen einen Faktencheck und halten den gröbsten Unfug fern. Doch weil in einem pluralistischen Mediensystem unterschiedliche Positionen abgebildet werden, hat jeder die Chance, zu Wort zu kommen – sofern seine Ansichten den rechtlich zulässigen Bereich nicht verlassen und diese Ansichten auch einigermassen zivilisiert geäussert werden.
Zu grosse Machtfülle
Doch in den sozialen Medien ist das anders. Autor Cory Doctorow hat das in der Folge Is online censorship going too far? des hier besprochenen Podcasts «The Inquiry» der BBC auf den Punkt gebracht: Das Problem liegt nicht darin, dass die grossen Plattformen moderierend eingreifen – schwierig ist vielmehr, dass es einige wenige Plattformen sind, die überhaupt eine derartige globale Macht haben.
Diese Ansicht teile ich. Nehmen wir mal an, dass jemand ungerechtfertigterweise bei Facebook, Twitter und Youtube rausfliegt. Er kann dann natürlich eine eigene Plattform starten. Doch wenn es Amazon oder einem der anderen Infrastrukturdienstleister sein Tun nicht gefällt und ihm wie im Fall von Parler den Zugang zu den Web Services abdreht, dann wird es schwierig bis unmöglich, noch Gehör zu finden.
Das ist eine Gefahr für die digitale Meinungsfreiheit, auch wenn bislang nur rechte und ultrarechte Kreise die Macht der Tech-Konzerne zu spüren bekommen haben. Aber dass ein paar wenige Leute im Silicon Valley die grossen Gatekeeper sind, das kann uns nicht recht sein.
Im Nerdfunk Meinungsfreiheit versus Hetze und Hass haben wir über die Idee diskutiert, dass sogenannte Plattformräte darüber entscheiden könnten, wo die roten Linien verlaufen. Die würden ähnlich wie die Aufsicht bei öffentlich-rechtlichen Medien operieren. Bei der SRG kann man als Vereinsmitglied Einfluss nehmen. Mir ist zwar nicht wirklich klar, wie gross dieser Einfluss ist. Aber im Fall der sozialen Medien liesse sich das so regeln, dass der Plattformrat über die Community-Regeln bestimmt und deren Anwendung überwacht.
Ein gepflegterer Umgangston
Die Logistik eines solchen Unterfangens wäre natürlich eine ganz andere Sache. Mir ist längst nicht klar, wie man das würde organisieren wollen. Daher ist es vielleicht in der Tat einfacher, Monopole und Oligopole bei den sozialen Medien zu verhindern.
Eine lebendigere Landschaft an sozialen Medien wäre der Diskussionskultur förderlich. Denn wir wissen von Netflix‘ Dokudrama Das Dilemma mit den sozialen Medien, wie Facebook und Twitter auf Stunk getrimmt sind, weil sie damit am meisten Werbeeinnahmen generieren. Wenn sich parallel dazu Plattformen etablieren könnten, die von den Nutzern getragen werden, würde sich sicher auch der Umgangston irgendwann wieder normalisieren.

Das grosse Twitterer-Assessment, Folge 3: @koeppelroger
Name und Twitter-Handle

Roger Köppel alias @KoeppelRoger. Das Twitter-Handle ist, man muss es anerkennen, durchaus passend gewählt. Der Proband versteckt sich nicht hinter einem fantasievollen Alias oder hinter einer originellen Abwandlung seines Geburtsnamens.
Im Gegenteil: Das Twitter-Handle entspricht dem Geburtsnamen, mit einer bemerkenswerten Besonderheit allerdings: Der Proband stellt den Nachnamen vor den Vornamen.
Dieses Muster ist als Anknüpfung an eine konservative Tradition zu verstehen. In ländlichen Gebieten war (und ist es womöglich heute noch) Brauch, Leute mit dem Geschlechtsnamen voran zu benennen, teils sogar im Genitiv: «Meiers Fritz ist gestern schon wieder besoffen mit dem Velo aus dem Spunten nach Hause gefahren».
Hier drückt der Nachname eine Art Stammeszugehörigkeit aus, während der Vorname lediglich eine Konkretisierung darstellt, welcher der Meiers denn nun genau gemeint ist. In einem urbanen Kontext, in dem das Individuum im Vordergrund steht, würde man von einer solchen Benennung Abstand nehmen: Da ist man eher der Ansicht, dass allein der Vorname eine Person ausreichend beschreibt. Beispiel: @jack
Es ist immerhin auffällig, dass der Proband seinen Vornamen nennt. In letzter Konsequenz, zum Beispiel in einer hierarchischen Organisation wie der Armee, wird auf den Vornamen gänzlich verzichtet und stattdessen die Rangbezeichnung in den Namen integriert. Hätte sich der Proband für diese Benennung entschieden, würde das Twitter-Handle entweder @Koeppel oder aber @ChefredaktorKoeppel lauten. Allerdings ist das erste Handle bereits seit 2009 belegt, während der Proband erst 2012 zu Twitter gestossen ist. Das zweite mit 19 Zeichen zu lang. (Twitter-Handles dürfen maximal 15 Zeichen haben.)
Originalität der Twitter-Bio
Die Selbstbeschreibung besteht nur in einem Link zur «Weltwoche», der Wochenzeitung, der der Proband als Chefredaktor und Herausgeber vorsteht.
Diese Beschreibung ist insofern lückenhaft, als sie ausser Acht lässt, dass der Proband seit 2015 auch als Nationalrat im Schweizer Parlament sitzt. Entweder betrachtet der Proband dieses politische Amt als generell nicht so wichtig, oder aber er erachtet es im Kontext seiner Aktivitäten auf Twitter als nicht relevant. So oder so muss bei dieser Twitter-Bio mangelnde Originalität und fehlender Esprit konstatiert werden.
Bedeutung, Reichweite und Output
KoeppelRoger hat 24.640 Follower und gehört damit sowohl unter Berufskollegen wie auch im politischen Sektor zu den Schwergewichten.
Der Chefredaktor von SRF, @brenntr, hat im Vergleich lediglich gut 4000 Follower, obwohl sein Medienhaus deutlich mehr Einfluss geniesst als die Weltwoche. KoeppelRoger sticht auch den Bundespräsidenten Guy Parmelin aus, der mit seinem Account @ParmelinG lediglich auf knapp 13’000 Follower kommt. Man könnte das so interpretieren, dass Twitter die realen Einflusssphären verzerrt darstellt. Doch auch die Deutung, dass nicht alle Politiker und Chefredaktoren Twitter effektiv zu nutzen vermögen, ist zulässig.
Als Reichweite gibt socialbearing.com für die letzten 59 Tage beachtliche Zahlen aus: KoeppelRoger verzeichnet 3,25 Millionen Impressionen und eine Reichweite von 24’709 Nutzern, sowie 14’400 Retweets und 93’138 Favs. Das lässt keinen Zweifel daran, dass KoeppelRoger auf die Aufmerksamkeit sowohl der eingeschworenen Fans als auch der Kritiker und politischen Gegner zählen darf.
Themen und herausragende stilistische Merkmale
KoeppelRoger nimmt zu aktuellen politischen Themen Stellung und zeichnet sich durch eine Haltung aus, die man in einer moderaten Würdigung als kontrovers bezeichnen würde. Doch auch die Interpretation, dass bei KoeppelRoger das Anecken und Provozieren zu einem stilbildenden Merkmal gehört, ist durchaus zulässig. Das belegt der Tweet, der gemäss socialbearing.com in der jüngsten Vergangenheit für das grösste Engagement gesorgt hat:

Als lapidare Erkenntnis verkleidet, ist diese Aussage im Kern nichts weiter als eine Beleidigung an die Adresse aller Kritiker, die in einem Satz als Heuchler, als gefährlich und als Moralisten abgestempelt werden.
Diese Aussage allein genügt, KoeppelRoger im politischen Spektrum rechts zu verorten, in dem auch das Derogativ Gutmensch gebräuchlich ist. Es ist als Gegensatz zu der Selbstwahrnehmung dieser Kreise zu sehen, die sich als Teil einer Meritokratie verstehen, in der niemand etwas geschenkt bekommt, sondern alle sich jeglichen Erfolg selbst hart erarbeitet haben.
Der Vorwurf, ererbte Privilegien oder Günstlingswirtschaft könnten einen Teil zu diesem Erfolg beigetragen haben, wird von diesen Kreisen gerne als Auswuchs der politischen Korrektheit abqualifiziert und entsprechend vehement abgestritten.
Ein weiteres Merkmal dieses Twitterers ist, dass er sich als aktiver Verteidiger des abgewählten US-Präsidenten versteht und sich unumwunden als Verteidiger zu erkennen gibt:
Trump ist nicht der Urheber dieser Explosion des Unbehagens. Millionen Amerikaner haben sich von der herkömmlichen Politik abgekoppelt, trauen Trump mehr als den etablierten Institutionen. Über die Gründe müsste man nachdenken, statt dieser dumpfen Trump-Verteufelung.

Ob diese Haltung auf echter Bewunderung basiert oder lediglich auf strategischem Kalkül beruht, lässt sich aufgrund der Twitter-Nachrichten nicht abschliessend beurteilen.
Abschliessende Würdigung
Der Proband zeichnet sich durch das Bemühen aus, sich in seinen Tweets als Gentleman und als Feingeist darzustellen, der kühl beobachtet und rational entscheidet.
Allerdings schafft es der Proband nicht, diesen Eindruck konstant aufrechtzuerhalten. Es kommt immer wieder zu Tweets, die die Begutachter nur als eigentliche Ausrutscher taxieren können. Als beispielhaft für diese Einschätzung mag der folgende Tweet dienen. Da wir vom eingangs zitierten Tweet wissen, dass sich der Proband explizit nicht als Heuchler versteht, lässt sich diese Aussage nur unter Annahme eines Messiaskomplexes verstehen:
Im Land der Heuchler wird der Ehrliche ans Kreuz genagelt.

Abschliessend lässt sich festhalten, dass der Proband ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist, dass sich gezielte Provokationen in den sozialen Medien eins zu eins in sozialmediale Aufmerksamkeit ummünzen lassen.
Die Begutachter kommen an dieser Stelle nicht umhin festzuhalten, dass die inhaltliche Substanz und die gesellschaftliche Relevanz der Tweets allein diese Aufmerksamkeit in keiner Weise rechtfertigen und lediglich der Zementierung des altbekannten Freund-Feind-Schemas dienen. Die Begutachter geben daher die Empfehlung ab, dem Probanden künftig etwas weniger Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken – selbst wenn das bedeuten sollte, dass man sich einen schönen Aufreger-Moment entgehen lassen muss.

God save the Bundesrat!
Man hat mich noch nie fahnenschwenkend durch die Strassen laufen sehen. Dafür fehlt mir die adäquate Grundhaltung. Die Fahnen hatten, wie man bei Wikipedia nachlesen darf, ursprünglich eine militärische Bedeutung. Sie halfen Soldaten dabei, ihre Einheit wiederzufinden und nicht versehentlich auf der Seite des Feindes das Kriegshandwerk zu verrichten.
Auch heute sind Fahnen vor allem Ausdruck der bedingungslosen Verehrung als einer kritischen Grundhaltung. Und ja, sie sind auch identitätsstiftend. In dieser Funktion kann ich mit ihnen leben – sodass ich auch schon an einer Erstaugustfeier sass, ohne das Gefühl zu haben, mich konstant von den überall drapierten Nationalsymbolen distanzieren zu müssen. (Das ist aber wirklich schon lange her.)
Dennoch hatte ich während gewisser Phasen meines Lebens intensiv mit Fahnen zu tun. Nämlich ungefähr 1996, wo ich bei meinem damaligen Arbeitgeber an einem Multimediaprojekt mitgearbeitet habe. Das hiess «Swiss Publishing CD» und wird im Beitrag Eine Ära geht zu Ende ausführlich gewürdigt: Wir haben damals eine Schweizer Clipart-Sammlung zusammengetragen. Die Fahnen von Ländern, Kantonen und Gemeinden waren ein zentraler Bestandteil dieser Sammlung und ich habe selbst diverse Fahnen in Illustrator als Vektorgrafik digitalisiert.
Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass mir der Flags Mashup Bot so gut gefällt. Ihn gibt es als @flagsmashupbot auf Twitter, und seine Daseinsberechtigung ist, aus zwei beliebigen Flaggen eine dritte zu generieren. Das ist völlig sinnlos und hat aber einen anarchistischen Charme. Aber es bereitet einem schelmisches Vergnügen.

Jedenfalls werfen diese Kreationen eine Frage auf: Sehen wir hier erste Ansätze von künstlich intelligenter Satire?
… wobei KI in dem Kontext offensichtlich zu hoch gegriffen ist. Ich weiss nicht genau, wie die Flaggen verheiratet werden, aber mutmasslich mit einer simplen Mechanik. Sie liefert in manchen Fällen Resultate, die je nach Interpretation unerwartet, langweilig oder hochbrisant sind.

Zugegeben: weniger eine partnerschaftliche Verbindung als vielmehr eine unfreundliche Übernahme. God save the Bundesrat!
Auf dieser Website hier kann man eigene Kombinationen auswählen und überprüfen, ob der Bot sie schon selbst erzeugt hat. Und in der Tat habe ich bei meiner Suche auf die Schnelle keine neue Kombination entdeckt. Und auf Discord gibt es eine Diskussion zum Fahnen-Bot.

Apple-App Store: “Beipackzettel” zeigt, welche Daten Facebook sammelt
… oder “Ich habe doch nichts zu verbergen”
Seit einiger Zeit hat Apple im App Store auf dem Mac, iPhones und iPads einen “Beipackzettel” Apple eingeführt. App-Entwickler sollen auf diesen “Privacy Labels” offen legen, welche Daten zu welchem Zweck gesammelt werden und wie Anwender und Anwenderinnen getrackt werden. Hier die Daten vom Facebook Messenger, von WhatsApp, dem Signal Messenger und Threads im Vergleich:

Besonders interessant: Drittanbieter-Werbung auf Basis des Standorts Analyse, was mag das sein? … und noch weitere NutzungAber wie sagen viele Bekannte so schön: Ich hab ja nichts zu verbergen, oder? Die Datensammelwut des Meta-Konzerns kann nicht besser – oder schlimmer – dokumentiert werden. Der Facebook Messenger sammelt und verwertet übrigens noch umfangreicher Daten.
Ich kann nur jedem empfehlen, sich ebenfalls einmal die Datenschutz-Angaben für Programme wie Facebook, für LinkedIn oder Xing anzuschauen. Es ist aus meiner Sicht ein wahrer Augenöffner. Und ich sehe es wie Jörg Schieb: “Genau so sollte es meiner Ansicht nach in allen App-Stores sein. Der Gesetzgeber sollte eine derartige Transparenz (gerne noch weitergehend) einfach vorschreiben.”
Und nicht nur Facebook schaltet Anzeigen und tobt! Werbenetzwerke, Targeting-Firmen und Anbieter von Tracking-Technologie sähen ihr Geschäftsmodell in Gefahr, so die Süddeutsche Zeitung. Und auch manche:r Softwarentwickler:in, die über Facebook-Buttons und Code Nutzerdaten sammeln und verwertem. wird unruhig. Kein Wunder, dass Verlage und und der Werbebranche protestierten. Um es klar zu stellen: Apple ist kein Unschuldslämmle, im Gegenteil, hat aber in dieser Frage meine volle Sympathie.

Social Media-Splitter: Noch nie waren die Anstrengungen in den USA und der EU so groß, die GAFA(M) Plattformen zu regulieren
Zum Jahresende doch nochmals einige Social Media-Splitter, denn es tut sich derzeit eine Menge: US-amerikanische und EU-Behörden haben die großen Plattformen im Visier. Ob daraus resultierend wirklich etwas passiert oder es nur Theaterdonner ist, das werden wir sehen. In den USA gehen Justizminsterium, Bundesstaaten und Gerichte gegen Facebook und Google vor. Google wird Monopolbildung vorgeworfen. Man benachteilige Wettbewerber in der Internetsuche und beim Werbegeschäft. Natürlich stoßen die Wettbewerber von Google wie unten DuckDuckGo* auch in dieses Horn und fordern gleiche Chancen:

Auch Facebook sieht sich in den USA mit mehreren Kartellklagen konfrontiert. Die Federal Trade Commission (FTC), die zweite maßgebliche Kartellinstanz in den USA fordert konkrete und sehr drastische Sanktionen. Neben Google und Facebook sind auch Amazon und Apple im Visier amerikanischer Kartellbehörden, Apple wegen der Provisionen, die von App-Entwicklern verlangt werden. Was ist denn da los, fragt man sich. Lediglich Microsoft scheint außen vor …
Auch die EU ist aktiv geworden und will die Macht der Konzerne einhegen, “Wir akzeptieren die Machtstellung der großen Plattformen nicht mehr so einfach”, sagte Kommissionspräsidentin Ursula von der Leyen kürzlich zur ZEIT. Mit dem Digital Markets Act will man sicherstellen, dass die großen, dominanten Tech-Konzerne ihre Marktposition nicht missbrauchen. Geldstrafen von bis zu 10 Prozent des globalen Jahresumsatzes sollen bei Verstößen möglich sein. Wir formulieren es Martin und Simon sio treffend in ihrem (kostenpflichtigen, aber sehr empfehlenswerten) Social Media Watchblog #691: Die halbe Welt legt sich mit Big Tech an.
Eine Handvoll Konzerne sind mächtiger als viele Regierungen – die jahrelang dabei zugesehen haben, wie demokratisch legitimierte Institutionen ihren Einfluss ans Silicon Valley verlieren. Die Politik war schlicht zu langsam und schwerfällig, um mit den Folgen der Digitalisierung Schritt zu halten.
Allmählich ändert sich das. Ende 2020 kulminiert eine Entwicklung, die sich schon länger abgezeichnet hat: Parlamente wollen den Plattformkapitalismus mitgestalten. Die aktuellen Gesetzesvorhaben und Kartellklagen könnten das Netz neu ordnen und Machtverhältnisse grundlegend verschieben.
Das ausführliche Briefing der beiden sei ausdrücklich empfohlen. Halten wir fest: Noch nie vorher waren Dinge so in Bewegung. Wie erfolgreich EU , USA und die anderen Ländern aber sein werden, wird man sehen. Vor allem aber – und darauf macht Patrick Bernau in seinem Kommentar in der FAZ aufmerksam – genügt es nicht, nur zu regulieren:
Die EU macht aus dem Internet ein „ebenes Spielfeld“, wie sie es gern nennt. Jetzt muss Europa aber auch selbst darauf mitspielen. …
Es reicht nicht, die Konzerne anderer Länder zu bändigen. Es müssen auch neue Unternehmen ihren Platz einnehmen wollen.

Facebook habe die verschiedenen Tools, Facebook, den Facebook Messenger, Instagram und WhatsApp unterdessen technisch derart verwoben, dass es schwierig werde könnte, sie wieder zu entflechten. Und Jörg Schieb stellt zum unerträglichen Quasimonopol von Facebook im Bereich Komm unikation kjlar [Ergänzung vom 23.12.2020]:
Zuckerberg hat seine Versprechen, WhatsApp und Instagram mehr oder weniger unabhängig zu betreiben, eindeutig gebrochen. Alle Daten fließen zusammen. Instagram und Facebook sind schon lange ein einheitliches Werbenetzwerk.
Doch bleiben wir optimistisch, dass sich Dinge vielleicht doch ändern können.
Michael Kroker hat in seinem Wirtschaftswoche-Blog nochmals die beeindruckenden und erschreckenden Zahlen veröffentlicht: Alle vier Dienste hatten demzufolge im 3. Quartal 2020 3,2 Milliarden Nutzer:innen im Monat:

Doch mögen sich ironischerweise auch zwei der GAFAM-Konzerne nicht besonders. Facebook ist im Clinch mit Apple, Mark Zuckerberg mit Tom Cook. Facebook is nicht “amused” über die geplanten neuen Funktionen von iOS 14, wodurch transparent gemacht werden soll, welche Daten der Nutzer die jeweiligen Apps und Dienste wie verwenden. Und dann gar noch eine notwendige explizite Einstimmung der Nutzer:innen, ein Opt-in, dass ihre Daten verwendet werden dürfen. Bisher muss man aktiv widersprechen, wenn man nicht getrackt werden will. Ich gebe zu, dass ich diese Auseinandersetzung mit einem mehr oder weniger breiten Grinsen verfolge.
Noch zwei weitere Nachrichten, die ich erwähnen will. Facebook hat wohl vor Jahren eine Vereinbarung mit Google getroffen, wonach Google Zugriff auf die WhatsApp-Inhalte von Millionen US-amerikanischer Anwender:innen hatten, die ihre Inhalte auf Google Drive gesichert haben. Schlimm genug.
Und Twitter will wohl Periscope, die Live-Streaming-App von und für Twitter, einstellen. Nutzer sollen danach Livestreams über die Haupt-App von Twitter gesendet werden können. Schauen wir mal, wie sich das entwickelt. Betrifft mich/uns ja auch bei zum Beispiel bei #9vor9.

The US’ Alliance With India Is A Bipartisan Issue Of Grand Strategic Importance
The US’ alliance with India will remain a mainstay of its grand strategy regardless of who wins next week’s elections since it’s a bipartisan issue of the highest importance for its permanent military, intelligence, and diplomatic bureaucracies (“deep state”).
The US-Indian Alliance
Analysts are scrambling to speculate the possible foreign policy changes that a Biden presidency might bring if he wins next week’s election, but one aspect of American grand strategy that isn’t likely to change is the US’ alliance with India. The two Great Powers formalized their military partnership earlier this week with the signing of the “Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement” (BECA), the third so-called “foundational pact” after the “Logistics Exchange Memorandum Of Agreement” (LEMOA) and “Communication Compatibility and Security Agreement” (COMCASA) which collectively improve these countries’ military interoperability. Neither side hides their shared anti-Chinese intentions either, as the author explained at length in his September analysis about how “It Was Inevitable That India Would Seek To Actively ‘Contain’ China”, which is a trend that he’s been closely following since mid-2016 when it was still “taboo” for the Alt-Media Community to discuss it. This trajectory will remain on track for several key reasons regardless of whoever wins the presidency.
Step By Step, President By President
The first is that the American bureaucratic machine has already kicked into gear and is intensely focusing its military, intelligence, and diplomatic (“deep state”) efforts into actualizing this alliance. It will therefore be extremely difficult to reverse this trend even if Biden sincerely wanted to, yet there’s no reason to suspect that he does since he was one of the overseers of the Obama-era “Pivot to Asia” which laid the basis for Trump’s formalization of America’s alliance with India. In fact, it can be argued that Obama — who built upon the progress pioneered by Bush Jr. such as the nuclear cooperation pact during that time — is one of the forefathers of this alliance since it wouldn’t have happened had it not been for his decision to continue his predecessor’s policies in this respect. As such, there’s no doubt that America’s alliance with India is a bipartisan issue for the US establishment.
“Pivoting” From West To East Asia Via The South
Another point to be made is that the “Pivot to Asia” naturally transitions the US’ strategic focus from West Asia to East Asia while traversing through the South Asian space between both. India isn’t just an ordinary country in US foreign policy planning, though, since its demographic and economic capabilities pair perfectly with its geostrategic location atop the Afro-Asian (“Indian”) Ocean to make it attractive as a “counterweight” to China. This explains its pivotal importance in the emerging Quad military network of anti-Chinese states, as well as the fact that its location is almost smack dab in the center of the Eastern Hemisphere which thereby makes it more important than any of that bloc’s other members. Neither Trump nor Biden could afford to ignore this unprecedented geostrategic opportunity, hence why they’re predicted to actually double down on it regardless of whoever wins since it best serves their nation’s interests to do so.
India’s Role In Trump & Biden’s China Strategies
While Trump and Biden have different attitudes towards China, that still won’t change the importance of India for their foreign policy visions. The incumbent will likely employ a more aggressive strategy of openly exploiting India as China’s foil in “Greater South Asia” (Central Asia/Afro-Asian Ocean/Southeast Asia) whereas Biden might be “gentler” with his approach out of a desire to reach a “New Detente” with China (whether for pragmatic or corrupt reasons). The Democrat candidate would continue the US’ growing trend of arms sales to that state but might care more about political and economic cooperation with India than any military-driven approach to “containing” China. If the prediction about Biden’s desire for a “New Detente” with the People’s Republic plays out, then India’s role would simply be to keep China “in check” as opposed to actively countering it like Trump envisions. Either way, India still serves a very strategic purpose for both presidential candidates.
Russia Must Urgently Recalibrate Its “Balancing” Act
This fact should be taken into consideration by all relevant stakeholders, especially Russia, which is already intensely competing with the US simply to retain its decades-long dominant position in the Indian arms market. That’s not at all to say that Russia should “dump” India, but just to propose that it must begin seriously countenancing contingency plans in the event that it loses more influence in the South Asian state otherwise it stands to become New Delhi’s “junior partner” and risk provoking an unintended “security dilemma” with China. The author warned about that scenario in his September analysis asking “Is Russia ‘Abandoning’ Or ‘Recalibrating’ Its ‘Balancing’ Act Between China & India?” and recommended that decision makers consider the dual response of reaching out to India to form a new Non-Aligned Movement (“Neo-NAM”) while enhancing strategic relations with Pakistan in order to restore “balance” to Russia’s “balancing” act. Failing to do so might destabilize the central tenet of Russian grand strategy, which is become Eurasia’s supreme “balancing” force.
Concluding Thoughts
No observer should doubt for a moment that America’s alliance with India will remain among its top grand strategic priorities regardless of the outcome of next week’s election. The gears of government are working in unison to promote this goal, which represents the culmination of Trump, Obama, and Bush Jr.’s efforts in a truly remarkable display of bipartisan agreement on a pressing issue of foreign policy significance. While Trump and Biden have different visions of how best to utilize their country’s alliance with India, the fact remains that they’ll nevertheless employ this partnership with increasing frequency to advance their respective goals, be it actively “containing” China like the incumbent envisions or more “gently” keeping it “in check” to uphold the “New Detente” that his opponent wants to clinch during his (or even more likely, his Vice Presidential pick’s) potential term. As this game-changing trend accelerates and increasingly becomes one of the main geostrategic determinants of Eastern Hemispheric affairs, Russia will be forced to recalibrate its “balancing” act with India.

Mein Corona-«skeptischer» Freund hat mal wieder auf Facebook gepostet
Was muss man eigentlich von linth24.ch halten? Das habe ich mich letzte Woche gefragt, nachdem einer meiner Facebook-Freunde einen Link gepostet hat, der Zweifel an der redaktionellen Kompetenz dieses Online-Mediums aufwirft.
Ein Leserbrief, den die Redaktion sogar mit einer Illustration gewürdigt hat.Der Beitrag «Aus Angst vor dem Tod aufs Leben verzichten» stammt von einem Leser. Er wird in der Spitzmarke als Leserbrief gekennzeichnet und im Lead entsprechend eingeführt.
Darüber hinaus gibt es keinerlei Einbettung. Das widerspricht meiner Erwartung als Mediennutzer. Denn bei einem klassischen Medium erscheinen Leserbriefe in einem eigenen redaktionellen Gefäss. Sie werden mit anderen Einsendungen gebündelt veröffentlicht und decken im Idealfall das ganze Spektrum der Lesermeinungen ab.
Die Einsendung von Leser Jürg Rückmar steht aber für sich und liest sich wie ein normaler redaktioneller Beitrag. Das lässt nur den Schluss zu, dass die Redaktion von «Linth24» voll und ganz hinter den Aussagen steht. Würde sie es nicht tun, hätte sie am Ende die für Gastbeiträge gerne verwendete Floskel angehängt: «Die Meinung des Autors muss sich nicht mit derjenigen der Redaktion decken.»
Darum lässt sich an dieser Stelle schon eine Feststellung treffen: Entweder beherrschen die Redaktoren bei «Linth24» ihr Handwerk nicht. Oder aber, sie schicken ihre Leser vor, um Meinungen zu verbreiten, bei denen sich kein Mitarbeiter getrauen würde, sie mit seinem Namen zu zeichnen.
Von A bis Z absurd
Denn was Leser Jürg Rückmar in seinem Text schreibt, ist an Absurdität nur schwer zu überbieten. Er fragt: «Warum dürfen wir nicht an Corona sterben? – Täglich sterben Menschen an Herzinfarkt, Krebs, Diabetes oder grippalen Infekten, an Alkoholismus, an unfallbedingten Verletzungen, an Drogen, Selbstmord, Depression, Gewaltverbrechen, Hunger und Durst. Doch ausgerechnet am Corona-Virus darf niemand sterben!»
Diese Argumentation ist so abwegig, dass sie keine Antwort verdient. Aber weil ich der Ansicht bin, dass man Unsinn am besten mit Sachlichkeit bekämpft, hier trotzdem ein rationaler Einwand:
Die Schweiz hat 2018 fast 82 Milliarden Franken für das Gesundheitswesen ausgegeben. Corona ist nicht die erste Krankheit, die in diesem Land bekämpft wird. Auch gegen Herzinfarkt, Krebs, Diabetes, grippale Infekte, Alkoholismus, Unfallverletzungen tun wir einiges. Wir versuchen, Drogenkonsumenten und psychisch Kranken zu helfen. Wir lassen Gewaltverbrechen nicht einfach geschehen.
Und wir sind nicht so schlecht darin zu verhindern, dass jemand in der Schweiz an Hunger und Durst sterben muss. Wir sind nicht immer erfolgreich. Aber das heisst nicht, dass wir es nicht probieren.
Und was den Hunger und den Durst angeht, darf man geteilter Ansicht sein, ob unsere Anstrengungen global gesehen ausreichen. Aber das ist eine andere Frage.
«Aus Angst vor dem Tod das Leben ausblenden»
Leser Jürg Rückmar erklärt, wir würden aus Angst vor dem Tod diesen aus unserem Leben ausblenden, und er fährt in seiner Argumentation fort: «Doch auf einmal ist der Tod wieder allgegenwärtig. Mit erschütternden Bildern wird er an uns herangetragen. Damit können wir nicht umgehen. Wir isolieren uns, verschanzen uns hinter Masken, verdächtigen jeden, der uns begegnet, denn er könnte den Tod zu uns bringen. Kinder sind nun eine Gefahr, alte Menschen bleiben isoliert, bis sie sterben. Um dieser Angst, der Konfrontation mit dem Thema Tod scheinbar zu entrinnen zu können, lassen wir alles über uns ergehen.»
Diese Behauptung ist genauso abwegig. Wir tragen die Masken nicht aus Angst vor dem Tod, sondern um keine Viren zu verbreiten. Die Masken sind ein Schutz für den Fall, dass wir uns infiziert haben und bereits ansteckend sein könnten, das aber wegen der langen Inkubationszeit selbst noch nicht bemerkt haben. Das ist eine reale Massnahme gegen eine echte Gefahr. Und nicht bloss Ausdruck unserer Unfähigkeit, uns dem Tod zu stellen.
Man kann die Widersprüchlichkeit des Beitrags auch aufzeigen, indem man darauf hinweist, dass der Autor im Titel nicht aufs Leben verzichten, im Lauftext aber an Corona sterben können will.
Ich habe meinen Facebook-Freund, der diesen Beitrag gepostet hat, darauf angesprochen, dass niemand wegen der Corona-Schutzmassnahmen «aufs Leben verzichten» müsse. Und auch wenn ich es kaum glauben kann, dass man eine solche Selbstverständlichkeit überhaupt aussprechen muss, so habe ich es trotzdem getan:
Eine Maske zu tragen, ist eine kleine Unannehmlichkeit, die jeder vernünftige Mensch klaglos hinnimmt – weil es ein winziger Preis dafür ist, dass wir nicht zum Überträger einer Krankheit werden, die einen anderen Menschen für lange Zeit schädigen oder sogar töten kann.
Diese Jammerei bringt niemandem etwas
Und ich habe meinem Facebook-Freund deutlich gesagt, dass ich es sinnlos finde, wenn er solche Beiträge postet. Wir müssen diese Masken jetzt tragen. Deswegen zu jammern, bringt niemandem etwas.
Die Antwort meines Facebook-Freundes war bezeichnend: «Es ist gar kein Gejammer, sondern einfach ein erweiterter Blick auf Gedanken Andersdenkender. Und dieser hat noch niemandem geschadet.»
Die Argumentation meines Facebook-Freundes kennt man aus den Kreisen der Verschwörungstheoretiker und -mythiker: «Wir erweitern den Horizont, stellen Fragen – und leisten damit Denkanstösse.» Die implizite Aussage ist, dass niemand etwas gegen solche Denkanstösse haben kann, weil man sich sonst dem Denken gänzlich verweigern würde.
Aber gerade dieses Beispiel zeigt, wie falsch diese Argumentation ist. Es ist möglich, dass dieser Beitrag jemanden darin bestärkt, keine Maske zu tragen. Diese Person, die sich nun der Maskenpflicht verweigert, kann im Fall einer eigenen Infektion Leute anstecken, die mit der Maske nicht angesteckt worden wäre. Das sorgt für eine weitere Verbreitung des Virus und allenfalls auch zu zusätzlichen, schweren Krankheitsverläufen oder Todesfällen.
Und ja, jeder, der keine Maske trägt, muss das für sich selbst verantworten. Doch ich verlange von meinem Facebook-Freund und auch von Medien wie «Linth24», die solche Meinungen verbreiten, eine klare Stellungnahme. Sie müssen das Risiko explizit mittragen und dürfen sich nicht hinter Formulierungen wie «ein erweiterter Blick hätte noch niemandem geschadet» verschanzen.
Was ist eigentlich von Linth24 zu halten?
Damit sind wir zurück bei der Ausgangsfrage: Was muss man von «Linth24» halten? Nimmt dieses Online-Medium seine Verantwortung wahr?
Bei persoenlich.com lese ich, dass seit März 2020 Sibylle Marti Chefredaktorin ist. Sie war beim SRF Redaktionsleiterin und Produzentin und müsste das Handwerk daher beherrschen. Auch ihren Vorgänger Mario Aldrovandi kenne ich vom Radio und habe ihn dort als verlässliche Stimme kennengelernt. Vielleicht ist es nur ein Ausrutscher?
Das kommt heraus, wenn «Linth24» etwas abschreibt, das der «Blick» aus dem «Wall Street Journal» abgeschrieben hat.Leider nicht. Der gleiche Facebook-Freund hat schon vor einiger Zeit den Beitrag Wall Street Journal: «Massnahmen tödlicher als das Virus» gepostet. Die Aussage im Lead doppelt nach: «Es würden mehr Menschen wegen der Corona-Massnahmen als wegen des Virus sterben.»
Bei diesem Beitrag fällt auf, dass «Linth24» sich noch nicht einmal die Mühe gemacht hat, den Originalbeitrag zu lesen und zu zitieren, sondern beim «Blick» abgeschrieben hat. Das so nichts Vernünftiges herauskommt, liegt auf der Hand.
Eine tendenziöse Zusammenfassung
So, wie «Linth24» den WSJ-Bericht zusammenfasst, muss man unweigerlich zum Schluss kommen, dass die Massnahmen kontraproduktiv waren und sind. Doch das ist nicht, was im Originalbeitrag steht. Der Titel lautet Death Toll From Covid-19 Pandemic Extends Far Beyond Virus Victims. Das besagt, dass das Virus nicht nur direkt, sondern auch indirekt Todesopfer fordert; beispielsweise durch verschobene Operationen oder Herzattacken.
Es wird aber auch erwähnt, dass die Massnahmen auch Todesfälle in anderen Bereichen verhindert haben und dass man eine endgültige Bewertung wohl erst in Jahren wird treffen können. Und das geht aus dem Text hervor – auch wenn man es noch klarer hätte ausdrücken dürfen: Ohne die Massnahmen hätte das Virus viel mehr direkte Todesopfer gefordert. Aber natürlich wären die Kollateralschäden bei überfüllten Krankenhäusern ebenfalls noch viel grösser gewesen.
Darum ist die implizite Botschaft von «Linth24» falsch und der Beitrag in dieser undifferenzierten Form verantwortungslos. Und ja, auch der «Blick» bekleckert sich mit seiner Zusammenfassung nicht mit Ruhm. Sie ist oberflächlich, sensationslüstern und reines Clickbaiting.
Fazit: Was dieses Online-Medium hier tut, ist schlechtes Handwerk. Das ist in normalen Zeiten dem Ruf des Journalismus nicht förderlich. Doch während einer Pandemie ist es fatal – vor allem, wenn man sich eigentlich in der seriösen, unideologischen Ecke positionieren möchte.
Solche Schludrigkeiten sind nicht akzeptabel
Tatsächlich: Im Vergleich ist der Umgang mit den «alternativen» oder den weit an den Rändern positionierten Medien einfacher. Die kann und darf man ausgrenzen. Doch ein Regionalmedium wie «Linth24», das bei vielen anderen Themen (wahrscheinlich) gute Arbeit leistet, ist das nicht möglich.
Darum darf man sich auch als kleine Onlineplattform Schludrigkeiten wie diese beiden Artikel nicht erlauben. Und wir Nutzer von sozialen Medien müssen Beiträge kritisch prüfen, egal aus welcher Quelle sie stammen.

Youtube Premium ist ganz okay – aber wie wird man die schlechten Videos los?
Aus beruflichen Gründen habe ich neulich einen Vorsatz über Bord geworfen. Ich hatte mir vorgenommen, das grosszügige Angebot von Google, Youtube Premium einen Monat kostenlos auszuprobieren, nicht wahrzunehmen.
Der Grund für meine Verweigerungshaltung war die Penetranz, mit der Google dieses Abo unter die Leute bringen will. Sowas löst bei mir eine sture Gegenreaktion aus. Ich will dann beweisen, dass ich mich so leicht nicht kleinkriegen lasse. Und ja, das ist ein bisschen kindisch: Als ob ich damit Sundar Pichai himself oder sonst jemanden bei Google beeindrucken würde.
Aber wie angedeutet: Ich bin eingeknickt und habe mit dem Testmonat begonnen. Der Grund war mein Plan, Youtube Premium in einem Video zu besprechen. Und darüber hinaus bin ich auch wirklich daran interessiert, wie Google Youtube weiterentwickelt. Ein Abomodell finde ich nicht grundsätzlich verkehrt: Richtig gemacht, könnte einen dringend benötigten Qualitätsschub bringen.
Darüber gleich mehr, aber hier erst einmal das Video mit meinem Fazit zu Youtube Premium:

Wie im Video gesagt: Keine Werbung sehen zu müssen, wäre mir ein bisschen etwas wert – zumal die Unterbrecher-Werbung wahnsinnig nervt und es mir auf den Wecker geht, dass man inzwischen vor einem Video häufig nicht nur einen, sondern zwei Spots vor den Latz geballert bekommt.
Zu teuer für Gelegenheitsnutzer
14.90 Franken im Monat ist für meine Nutzung zu teuer. Dass es dafür Youtube Music quasi geschenkt gibt, nützt mir nichts. Ich zahle für Spotify und gedenke, das auch weiterhin zu tun. Für mich wäre daher «Mini-Premium»-Abo sinnvoll: Werbefreiheit für zehn Stunden Youtube pro Monat für drei Franken, plus die Offline-Nutzung und die Wiedergabe im Hintergrund, aber ohne Youtube Music.
Noch zur Idee, mittels eines Premium-Abos die Qualität zu steigern. Und ich weiss natürlich, dass mein Vorschlag kontrovers ist und viele ihn für völlig unsinnig halten werden – und ich gebe zu, dass sich der Youtuber in mir auch extrem darüber aufregen würde. Aber nichtsdestotrotz kann man darüber nachdenken.
Nur Zahler sollten veröffentlichen dürfen
Also, die Idee ist, dass man fürs Veröffentlichen eigener Youtube-Videos ein kostenpflichtiges Abo braucht. Ob es das Premium-Abo für 14.90 wäre oder irgendein anderes, wäre noch zu diskutieren.
Die Überlegung ist, dass mit etwas höheren Hürden fürs Publizieren vor allem jene Machwerke auf der Strecke bleiben würden, um die es nicht schade ist. Zum Beispiel die Verschwörungsmythen in Videoform, die in konzertierten Aktionen immer und immer wieder hochgeladen werden, selbst wenn Youtube sie zeitnah sperrt – siehe: Wie Youtube von Verschwörungstheoretikern ausgetrickst wird
Gleichzeitig würde die Menge der neuen Videos reduziert, sodass der verbleibende Rest sorgfältiger moderiert werden könnte. Es liegt auch an der schieren Menge der veröffentlichten Videos, das so viel Fragwürdiges durchrutscht.
Bei Soundcloud herrscht weniger Anarchie
Als Vergleich dazu mag Soundcloud hilfreich sein: Bei der Musik- und Audioplattform kann man mit dem kostenlosen Basic-Account Material nur maximal drei Stunden Material veröffentlichen. Für mehr Reserven braucht man einen recht teuren Pro-Account. Ob ein Soundclouder den Basic-Account oder Pro Unlimited verwendet, ist bei jedem Track ersichtlich. Das bietet einem als Nutzer eine gewisse Orientierungshilfe.
Update: Die Diskussion auf Facebook hat mich dazu gebracht, den Vorschlag noch zu ergänzen: Youtube könnte das Geld, das über Youtuber mit Premium-Account hereinkommt, für erzieherisch besonders wertvolle Videos ausloben – so gäbe es auch einen positiven Anreiz für mehr Qualität. Update Ende.
Und noch einmal: Mir ist klar, dass diese Extrahürde ganz viele Probleme schafft: Sie ist elitär und macht es von der Zahlungskraft und -bereitschaft abhängig, ob sich jemand Gehör verschaffen kann. Dabei haben wir das Internet seinerzeit genau wegen seiner demokratisierenden Wirkung und der Gleichbehandlung in den höchsten Tönen gepriesen.
Sind Eliten etwas wert?
Das bringt uns zu Marcs Frage, die ich vor gut einem Jahr in diesem Beitrag hier diskutiert habe: Sind Eliten doch etwas wert?
Ich habe damals versucht, eine Antwort für mich zu finden. Das ist mir nur halb gelungen, und auch heute nehme ich nicht für mich in Anspruch, diese Frage abschliessend beantworten zu können. Da ich ein grosser Fan des Prinzips von Versuch und Irrtum bin, fände ich es okay, das einfach einmal auszuprobieren.
… und ja, vielleicht könnte man statt eine finanzielle Einstiegshürde von Youtubern auch eine andere Qualifikation verlangen: Jeder, der Videos veröffentlichen will, muss erst einen halben Tag lang als Assistent bei Youtube Videos moderieren. Und wenn ihm davon nicht schlecht geworden ist, darf selbst ran.
Um diesem Blogpost doch noch ein ernsthaftes Ende zu verschaffen: Wie wäre es, wenn weiterhin auch die Gratis-Youtube-Nutzer ihre Videos veröffentlichen dürften, ich aber als Nutzer einen «Zeig mir Videos nur von Premium-Abonnenten»-Schalter zur Verfügung hätte?

Heute kein Covid-19. Heute kein Trump.
Seit Ende letzten Jahres gibt es die Login-Allianz. Sie soll die Nutzer von Schweizer Newssites dazu bringen, sich zu registrieren, um die Angebote zu nutzen. Tamedia, Ringier, CH Media und NZZ sind beteiligt, und auch wenn es wegen Corona in letzter Zeit still um dieses Unternehmen geworden ist, soll es weitergehen.
In der «Werbewoche» war Ende Juni zu lesen, dass das Single Sign-on 2021 kommen soll. Single Sign-on bedeutet, dass sich der Nutzer nur einmal registrieren muss, um sich bei allen beteiligten Titeln einloggen zu können. Derzeit sind es rund 30 Medienmarken, die zur Allianz gehören.
Mit der Einführung des Universal-Logins wird die Registrierung nicht mehr freiwillig sein, sondern obligatorisch. Und auch SRF will daran teilnehmen; Ende 2020 soll dort die Amneldemaske Einzug halten.
Für die Idee hinter der Login-Allianz habe ich ein gewisses Verständnis: Es ist die Einsicht, dass man die Mediennutzern die Gratismentalität nur dann abgewöhnt, wenn die grossen Medienhäuser gemeinsam auftreten und gewisse Schranken vor die Inhalte setzen. Auch für das Interesse an Nutzerdaten habe ich absatzweise Verständnis. Und ich finde es besser, wenn man dieses Interesse über das Login klar deklariert, statt mittels versteckter Tracking-Methoden hinter dem Rücken Nutzer möglichst viele Daten zu sammeln.
Umsetzung missraten
Die Umsetzung der Login-Allianz halte ich indes für missraten. Erstens hätte das Single-Sign-on gleich beim Start zur Verfügung stehen müssen: Das hätte den Nutzern den Einstieg erleichtert. Und es würde jetzt nicht dazu führen, dass man die separaten Nutzerkonten zusammenführen muss.
Zweitens halte ich die Salamitaktik – erst freiwillig, dann obligatorisch – für schlecht. Es erhöht das Vertrauen nicht, wenn man als Nutzer das Gefühl hat, dass die Daumenschrauben kontinuierlich angezogen werden. Da fragt man sich unweigerlich, was als Nächstes kommt. Registierung nur mit bestätigter Identität oder mit hinterlegtem Zahlungsmittel?
Und schliesslich müsste man den Nutzern einen Mehrwert für ihre Anmeldung geben. Und zwar einen echten Mehrwert, nicht bloss die Möglichkeit, ein paar Abo-Plus-Artikel gratis zu lesen oder an einer Verlosung teilzunehmen.
Eine naheliegende Funktion, für die sich sicherlich viele Leute anmelden würden, wäre die Individualisierung der gebotenen Inhalte: Die Gelegenheit, die Ressorts nach den persönlichen Vorlieben zu sortieren. Oder, mir persönlich noch lieber, die Chance, Uninteressantes zu blockieren. Also, was mich angeht, kein Sport, keine Promi-Klatsch, kein Bachelorette-Bullshit.
Unliebsame Themen ausblenden
Sinnvoll wäre sicherlich auch die Möglichkeit, gewisse Stichworte zu blockieren – vielleicht sogar dynamisch. Grundsätzlich bin ich interessiert, was sich an der Corona-Front tut. Doch es gibt die Momente, wo mir die Pandemie zum Hals heraushängt und ich nichts davon lesen mag. Genauso geht es mir mit dem amerikanischen Präsidenten. Da wäre es schön, einen Schalter umlegen zu können, der besagt: Heute kein Covid-19. Heute kein Trump.
Ich habe mich nun gefragt, ob man diesen Effekt auch ohne entsprechende Filterfunktion bei den Newssites erzielen kann. Gibt es Browsererweiterungen, die entsprechende Dinge ausfiltern?
Die Erkenntnisse einer noch laufenden Nachforschung sind bisher folgende: Es gibt Ansätze, aber befriedigend sind sie nicht.
Zwei Themenblockierer – aber nur für den Desktop
Die beiden Lösungen habe ich im Testbetrieb – und beide funktionieren leider nur am Desktop, nicht aber auf den mobilen Plattformen:
Social Fixer. Das ist eine Erweiterung für Chrome und Firefox, die sich um Facebook kümmert. Sie tut eine ganze Reihe von Dingen: Entfernt gesponsorte Posts, schaltet automatisch von der algorithmisch gewichteten Timeline auf die richtige, chronologische Zeitleiste um, informiert den Nutzer darüber, wer ihn gerade entfreundet hat, und vieles mehr. Es ist beachtlich, was diese Erweiterung alles tut.

In den Einstellungen – die man über ein Schraubenschlüssel-Symbol in den Faceboook-Farben rechts oben aktiviert – gibt es die Option Hide posts. Dort erfasst man die Themen, die man nicht sehen will, als Stichworte. Standardmässig wird anstelle des ausgeblendeten Beitrags eine Meldung angezeigt, die wahlweise anzeigt, welches Stichwort zur Filterung geführt hat. Wenn man komplett in Ruhe gelassen werden möchte, kann man aber auch darauf verzichten.

Unter Filters gibt es auch vorgefertigte Löschoptionen – zu Covid-19, der US-Wahl 2020, Facebook-Spielen, Erinnerungen, Personenvorschläge und einiges mehr.
Gut, aber nicht sehr zuverlässig
Fazit dazu: Eine gute Idee, aber ich bin nicht überzeugt, dass Social Fixer zuverlässig funktioniert. Ich habe schon Posts gesehen, die eigentlich hätten eliminiert werden müssen. Das könnte ein Problem der deutschen Sprachversion sein. Denkbar ist auch das neue Facebook-Design, das ich schon im Einsatz habe. Trotzdem: Einen Versuch ist es auf alle Fälle wert!
Soothe. Eine Erweiterung für Chrome, die Hass und Belästigung zum Verschwinden bringen will. Nach der Installation kann aus den Kategorien Homophobie, Rassismus, Sexismus, Transphobie, Gewalt und sexualisierte Gewalt angeben, was man nicht sehen will.

Ein Test hier hat sie als recht effektiv bezeichnet, doch bei meinen Probelauf hat auch diese Erweiterung nicht so richtig funktioniert – was wahrscheinlich wiederum daran liegt, dass die Erweiterung auf den englischen Sprachraum ausgelegt ist.
Und Soothe ist auch nicht das, was ich möchte: Ich bin durchaus gewillt, mich mit den Widrigkeiten der Online-Welt auseinanderzusetzen. Ich habe kein Interesse an einer gesäuberten Version der Wirklichkeit. Es geht mir vielmehr darum, wann ich mich mit gewissen Themen beschäftige und wann nicht. Und dafür scheint es noch keine brauchbare Lösung zu geben. Falls aber jemand noch eine brauchbare Lösung dafür kennt: Gerne ab damit in die Kommentare!

An American Muslim’s traumatizing experience with US government surveillance and attempted entrapment

An American Muslim, Malak Shalabi opens up on social media about her traumatizing experience in 2018 with an American spy, US government surveillance and attempted entrapment.
This is her harrowing story.
This is the first time I share this story publicly, because I need this documented and I am no longer afraid.
In 2018, I connected with a former classmate of mine on FB. We had taken a class in 2016 taught by a former FBI agent, who trashed Islam constantly. I was surprised to learn my classmate, “X”, was a convert. I offered to teach him Arabic, as I taught youth & converts at the time.
Our first session in October was ordinary, my friend joined us and I taught him the first few letters of the alphabet. When we walked out to the parking lot, he pointed out that he had recently gotten into an accident and the front of his car was busted.
In December, we met again, and my friend was unable to join so we were alone. He started speaking in a way I have never heard Muslims ordinarily speak. He was inflammatory and making simpleton statements on complex issues like jihad, hijrah, kuffar, and democracy as shirk.
He tried to corner me into answering absolutist questions, and brought up “sheiks” who I know were blacklisted, assassinated, & exiled for their affiliations with terrorism. He knew my background as a student of international affairs & activist, & tried to pin me on those points.
I left the meeting with a very eerie and creepy feeling, and I swore I would never see him again. X sent me content & websites that are known for terrorism propaganda. These sites are tracked. He sent me videos of a Jamaican Imam who was exiled for pledging allegiance to ISIS.
In January 2019, I told him I would not be able to complete teaching him Arabic. He said, that is fine, I actually sorted my passport issues and will be leaving this country to “FIGHT.” He said he was going to Afghanistan and ASKED IF I HAD CONNECTIONS IN PALESTINE.
I immediately told him he was severely misconstruing the scripture of Islam to fit his desires, and that he had to seek professional help. My friend, “Y”, and I referred him to a mosque where the Imam is both a psychologist and learned scholar of Islam.
We agreed to meet on Friday at the mosque, and then rescheduled to Sunday because my car had broken down. On Friday, January 25, 2019 Y and I had done a fundraiser for Syrian refugees. After cleaning up and coming home around 1 am, Y called me crying with her brother on the line.
She told me, “X ran his car into a police station. He hit a cop car and ran toward them with a knife yelling the shahada, saying he was going to kill them. He’s in jail now. He’s in jail he’s in jail he’s in jail. They’re going to get us because we know him. His life is over.”
Y and I fell asleep that night, and many other nights after that, hyperventilating, crying, plagued with guilt, fear and paranoia as to what would happen to us and our families. Wishing we could have done something. Wishing I never met him. Wishing this never happened.
We expected the FBI to knock on our door the next morning, and I immediately started scheduling appointments with attorneys. The first attorney we met with was immediately skeptical of the situation. It turned out that X got out on 100 k bail within a few days.
I started doing more research, and found his LinkedIn that listed his current employer as A SECURITY AGENCY UNDER A GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION. He started working there just when we finished our class with the former FBI teacher in 2017.
I did more digging, and found an eBook that mentioned his SPECIFIC SECURITY AGENCY by name and locality as part of a anti-terrorist network model that gathers and shares “threat information” by sending out insurgents into the Muslim community to spy on and entrap men and women.
I also then realized that the news picture of his car after ramming into the cop car looked just like his car when I first saw it in the lot. This easily could have been a staged crime photo since his car was already busted, and the cop car had no showing damage.
I found similar cases online to this one – one where an insurgent was paid to stage running into a cop car. Entrapment is the practice of law enforcement or insurgents/spies staging crimes to rope in some level of “material support”, which can include words of support alone.
Once he was out jail, X began texting me and adding me to groups asking me for WORDS OF SUPPORT. He asked for advice and guidance and support as he was “going through a rough time.” I told him to stop messaging me, and he tried to incite me by calling me a hypocrite and heretic.
Y and I started to be watched, harassed, and followed. Y had a “_ County Security” van that would park in front of her house. A woman with a laptop would snap pictures when anyone would enter or leave the house. I had tinted cars with no tabs parked outside my house.
Y was watched by another car and anonymous person at the mosque. Y saw X’s brother at the gym, and then was followed by his friend in the night. He followed her on a dark road until she called the police, and they arrested him after he admitted to following her.
My mom received text messages mentioning the mosque that X & I attended, asking for my address. I received calls ALL DAY, I heard the click of being recorded, and after I’d say a few words, would cut the line. When I’d call back the number, it would be disconnected. EVERY. TIME.
Y and I were then continuously contacted and approached by people who turned out to be related to X or sent by X, until her and I permanently left that space. We also received information that X’s friend had a “side hustle” from spying on the mosque he attended.
I am writing this because today, I refuse to be scared & paranoid. I was terrified to speak out, and only my close friends know this story. But it is my duty to share this story if it can help even one soul, or one person searching “entrapment” or “staged crime” on Twitter.
I now understand my story to be part of a systemic issue of discriminatory surveillance and targeting of the Muslim community. I hope someone, and anyone can learn from my experience.

WireGuard Routing and Port Forwarding
WireGuard provides unlimited possibilities for creating private and secure networks without having to expose devices to the public internet. In this example I wanted to access the Mikrotik router configuration panel from anywhere in the world similar to how Cloud Key and Cloud Access enables it for Ubiquity devices.
Update in 2025: RouterOS now has full WireGuard support (including the “back to home” feature) so this setup can be simplified by exposing the whole LAN over WireGuard.
Solar powered Mikrotik wAP LTE router.I built a solar powered Raspberry Pi used as a security camera which is connected wirelessly to a solar powered Mikrotik LTE router to access the internet through a mobile data connection.
The Raspberry Pi is also running WireGuard so all we have to do is forward the incoming WireGuard traffic to a few ports on the Mikrotik router.
Here is how to configure the Raspberry Pi acting as a WireGuard peer to do the custom routing:
1. Enable IP Forwarding
IP forwarding is disabled by default on Raspbian so it’s extremely important to enable it for any of the iptables rules to work.
Enable IP forwarding in the Linux kernel by uncommenting or adding (uncommenting) net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 to /etc/sysctl.conf to persist the setting between system restarts. Use sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 to enable IP forwarding immediately without having to reboot.

We’re routing a WireGuard peer on a network interface wg0 and an IP range of 10.200.200.0/24 to the IP address 192.168.88.1 in the local network available through the wlan0 interface.

The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and China met in Riyadh on 21 July 1990 and established diplomatic relations for the first time through the efforts of Pakistan.
The emerging Saudi-Pakistan-China alliance gave serious anxiety to the US since they could never afford the next superpower to make inroads into the oil rich region. Saudis had already bought a small number of missiles from China in mid-1980s.
When the missiles had reached KSA, the then US President Ronald Reagan threatened the Saudis and gave three options:
“Ship the missiles back to China, dismantle them temporarily and negotiate terms for the use, or allow US monitors to be stationed at the launching site”.
To the surprise of the US, King Fahad refused all three demands.
In less than two weeks after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and China, Iraq’s President Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.
Saddam’s rationale of invading Kuwait was that it was originally part of Iraq during the Ottoman Empire. Kuwait was carved out of Iraq after the British defeated the Ottomans.
Saddam was correct in his assertions as this wasn’t the first time imperialist forces carved out new territories in their geopolitical interests. For instance, Hong Kong and Taiwan were parts of China before they became independent protectorates of Britain and the US respectively.
But Saddam’s invasion of Kuwait was inadvertently providing the United States an opportunity to finally fulfil the dreams of Churchill, Roosevelt and Harold Ickes who always aspired to control the Middle East oil.
Just days after the invasion, Dick Cheney (defence secretary) and Paul Wolfowitz (under secretary of defence for policy) made plans to evict Iraqi forces. As per the plan, the US forces would assemble in Saudi Arabia for the protection of KSA followed by a plan to liberate Kuwait.
Once Dick Cheney and his team arrived in Jeddah, they shared satellite photographs with King Fahad as per which the Iraqi tanks deployed on the Saudi border were ready to invade Saudi Arabia.
The Saudis despite being the largest producer of oil did not have the military power to fight the Iraqi military. King Fahad allowed the Americans to establish bases in Saudi Arabia who did not leave for the next 13 years.
To everyone’s surprise, The Chinese Science Monitor revealed in 2002 that the satellite photographs that showed Iraqi tanks on the border of Saudi Arabia were either doctored or taken from places other than the Iraqi-Saudi border by the US.
According to Jean Heller of the St. Petersburg Times in Florida, her news organization acquired two commercial Soviet satellite images of the same area that showed the deployment of Iraqi forces. Pentagon had claimed that up-to 250,00 Iraqi troops were ready to invade Saudi Arabia.
The images the St. Petersburg Times had acquired were shown to a former analyst of Defence Intelligence Agency who specialized in desert warfare. He pointed out the US build up – jet fighters standing wing-tip to wing-tip at Saudi bases – but was surprised to see almost no signs of Iraqi forces. According to Heller:
“That [Iraqi build-up] was the whole justification for Bush sending troops in there, and it just didn’t exist….To this day, the Pentagon photographs of the Iraqi troop build-up remain classified”.
It can be concluded that the only goal of US administration in 1990-91 was to put permanent military boots on Saudi soil so they could control the energy resources of the Middle East and could counter the emerging Saudi-Pak-China alliance.
On 11 March 1992, The Washington Post covered a leak story about the new US military policy that called for military action against any nation that would attempt to challenge the leadership of the US particularly in the Middle East.
The draft called for the US to maintain a military dominance that would be capable of “deterring potential competitors from even aspiring to a larger regional or global role”.

Freedom of speech—the right to express views without government restraint is a democratic ideal in practice since the ancient Greek period. The ancient Greek word “parrhesia” which presumably appeared in Greek literature for the first time at the end of fifth century B.C., denotes to ‘free speech’ or to ‘speak candidly’.
During the classical period, it has been considered a central part of Athenian democracy. Open discussions have been carried out on religion and politics by the leaders, philosophers, playwrights and common Athenians. Moreover, in some settings, Government has also been criticized.
Considering present day freedom of speech and its role in modern warfare in terms of cognitive manipulation through media by streamlining the discourses not supported by the ‘correct facts’; this practice contributes to narrative formation by employing propaganda. This is being done by exploiting language use.
Along these lines, language weaponization takes place in the social media space in conjunction with the use of technology, artificial intelligence and cyber propaganda as instruments of strategy, which has been observed as a recent phenomenon to streamline designed cognitive deception.
This can be considered in view of Kurt Lewin’s Life Space Theory which comprises the individual and his psychological or behavioral environment as facts that affect the behaviour or thoughts of the individual at a certain point in time. Since globalisation has engaged the nation-states at all levels of interaction in the social hierarchy, media has become the driving force of the global society.
Years ago, Benjamin Whorf and Edward Sapir, through the Linguistic Relativity Hypothesis, discussed linguistic manipulation in relation to the cognitive aspects of language use and the way it is being interpreted by the receiver. However, nowhere in the world freedom of speech is boundless.
In the United States, the First Amendment guarantees free speech, though the United States, like all modern democracies, places limits on this freedom. In a series of landmark cases, the U.S. Supreme Court over the years has helped to define what types of speech are—and are not—protected under U.S. law.
In Pakistan, disinformation/fake news in the name of free-speech is becoming a stimulus, inciting internal conflicts. For instance, the prevalent tactics are constructing ‘frames of reference’ and ‘narratives’ streamlining and prioritizing rather passive and pessimistic projections by presenting issues more than solutions concerning mainly the domestic state of affairs.
In Pakistan’s socio-political setting, this can be determined in view of the absence of the ‘fact-checkers’ in the Pakistani newsrooms. Moreover, lack of objectivity and ‘hint-dropping’ practices quoting ‘sources’ have been observed to be contributing to the socio-cognition of the audience.
Similarly, the role of masses cannot be excluded in this process. With easy excess to social media, a frequent downpour of disinformation/misinformation may help to construct certain ‘frames of reference’, which if ascertained in some way or another in the context of developing events, attract support.
In this way, certain influences can be asserted by such trends in the social media space. Along these lines, electronic media gets affected and becomes a key player in constructing narratives by popularizing trendy discourse in social media. In consequence, media in general and social media in particular ultimately contribute to the construction of the ‘narratives’ of uncertainty, frustration, and confusion among the masses. This is threatening in the backdrop of national security because of the fact that social media played a significant role to involve people in the mass protests of 2019 around the globe.
Therefore, the adoption of a legal standpoint and a policy to standardize language-use in media need to be considered. Likewise, the initiation of a solution-based discourse centralizing Pakistan’s potential must be encouraged realizing the impact of linguistic manipulation, alongside its impact on psychological and social conduct.

Across All Continents Kashmiri Diaspora Organizations Condemn Annexation Of Kashmir

Washington, D.C. August 4, 2020: On August 5, 2019, the Government of India laid bare its naked ambition extant since partition in 1947 to brutally colonize the territories of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). On that date, it threw away any pretence of acknowledging the J&K’s right to self-determination as outlined by the United Nations’ Security Council and agreed to at that time by the Government of India 72 years earlier.
The events of August 5, 2019 are consistent with the ruthless occupation and suppression the people of Kashmir have suffered under the unpopular Indian rule. As is widely acknowledged and documented internationally, this brutal occupation has led to 150,000 civilian deaths, more than 8000 individuals missing or disappeared, and thousands of Kashmiri women raped. This does not even begin to account for the tens of thousands tortured, maimed, and permanently injured men, women and children by the Indian security forces during their 72-year reign of terror.
But despite this persistent and pernicious tyranny, the people of Kashmir never have nor ever will give up their right to be free. It is based on this internationally recognized, and principled stand the Kashmiri diaspora and its allies worldwide stand in solidarity with J&K’s people. We stand in support of their unyielding struggle to resist occupation and achieve their right to self-determination. We stand with them in their struggle to stop the Indian government from dehumanizing them and completing their settler-colonial project to remove them culturally, politically, and ethnically from the face of the earth.
Since, August 5, 2019, the Indian government, in order to crush any resistance to their illegal occupation, has instituted new draconian measures. First, they unilaterally removed any relics of initial recognition of their occupation by abrogating Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution, imposed a total military lockdown and complete communication blockade in anticipation of the protest and resistance these measures would inevitably cause. In a ruthless campaign they imprisoned politicians, journalists, and civil society members, to intimidate and suppress any form of dissent.
Since then, they have unleashed a well-designed imperialist plan that seeks to forever change the political nature of the Kashmir dispute through demographic changes, political manoeuvrings, and administrate machinations. These alterations to J&K’s disputed nature were recently capped by new domicile laws that would entitle people from outside of J&K to obtain domicile certificates as a first step toward granting them the right to buy land and compete for local jobs. The Indian rulers have sought to shamelessly disregard that these unilateral changes made to the UN-recognized international dispute’s status are a clear violation of International Law.
The consequences of these actions have been dire with the people of J&K being essentially forced to be locked in their homes, terrorized by the Indian military and paramilitary forces with no recourse against this oppression. According to a recent report –spanning first six months of 2020 –prepared by the J&K Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS), and the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP), the army action has resulted in 229 killings, including three (3) underage children and two (2) women. During the brutal Cordon and Destroy Operations (CADOs), the occupying forces have destroyed hundreds of civilian dwellings, rendering their occupants homeless. Amnesty International has reported that disappearances, torture, and rape against Kashmiri Muslims are frequent. Genocide Watch has identified the actions of the Government of India as precursor to a likely genocide of the Kashmiri people.
It is with this in mind that we appeal to all peoples of conscience and the international community to raise their voices against the brutal oppression the people of Jammu and Kashmiri are suffering under the occupying forces of the Government of India. We urge them to demand that India:
- Immediately lift the yearlong military siege, restore all internet connectivity and communications links, and release all political prisoners including underage children, journalists, and civil society members.
- Allow unfettered access to monitor and report on human rights violations by credible international bodies including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, International Federation for Human Rights, World Organization Against Torture (WOAT), Doctors without Borders, Physicians for Human Rights, and, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and other UN thematic rapporteurs.
- Halt and rescind all laws, such as the Domicile Laws, that have been instituted to speed the demographic changes and promote the ethnic, cultural, and political cleansing of the people of Jammu and Kashmir
- Disarm and withdraw all Indian military and paramilitary personnel from the occupied territories so that all the people in Jammu &Kashmir can exercise their unfettered right of self-determination through a free and fair referendum as agreed to by both the Governments of India and Pakistan as well as the United Nations Security Council as early as 1948.

On the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, the Kashmiris were not allowed to offer Eid Prayers in the Grand Mosque of Srinagar and all over Indian Occupied Kashmir. If there is calm and peace in Kashmir as asserted by Indian Premier Narendra Modi, then why ban on prayer?
The APHC General Secretary, Moulvi Bashir Ahmed Irfani, the Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Youth Social Forum Umer Adil Dar and the Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Peace Forum advocate Devender Singh Behl in their press statements expressed deep concern over the continued bloodshed of the Kashmiris by the colonial occupation of Indian forces. The ban imposed on Eid congressional prayers in mosques has unmasked the gruesome face of Indian so called secularism.
Modi in his frantic tempo is committing mistake after mistake. He has banned the study of Chinese language as an optional subject in Indian schools and colleges. It is the height of stupidity. His spite even with a language shows his idiotic mind-set. I call it the apex of deflected, deranged and degenerated mind-set.
The army chief of Pakistan General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited the Line of Control in Khoei Rata, Mirpur, Azad Kashmir on Eid and addressed the soldiers who are valiantly defending the sacred soil of motherland. Army Chief reiterated his unshakable stance that Kashmir is the jugular vein of Pakistan and soon Kashmir will be the part of Pakistan.
He warned India to remain in shirts and refrain from aggression and befitting response will be given to Indian assaults. The whole nation appreciated the address of our dynamic, brave and patriotic General Qamar Javed Bajwa. Bravo: Hurrah.
The Indian Defence Minister blabbered a few days ago that the Indian army is very brave and will face valiantly the Chinese army. What a bluffing. Indian army cannot face Pakistani army, the hell it will face the Chinese army. The bravery of the Indian army can be gauged from the recently given interview of a former Indian Major General Mr. Bakhshi. He said that in 1991 skirmishes at Kargil, Pakistani army fought with great commitment, bravery and courage and thrashed out Indian Army. Indian 50 Punjab regiment was badly beaten and was intimidated. The then government hid our shameful defeat. Pakistani army made us to rub the nose. This interview is a slap on the face of Indian Defence Minister.
Kashmir is a test case for UN. Kashmir is like a volcano that can erupt any time and its eruption will destroy and devastate the fabric of the South Asia. The devilish and devious designs of Modi will turn both the countries into debris. India is a big country and needs sober and sane leadership. It needs a debonair leader. It does not need a deceitful and debilitated dullard.
I appeal to the saner Indian element to resist the policies of Modi if they want to avert the nuclear strike in the Sub-continent. Pakistan will go to any extent to save its solidarity and identity. Let us save our coming generations from the hazards of nuclear war.
The president of the USA, Donald Trump in his electioneering campaign had enthusiastically announced to mediate to resolving Kashmir issue. India claims to be the buddy of America. For the last seven decades, it was a “Maid “of America and now has become the “Mistress” of America. These coquetries of a whore will not last long. This friendship is unnatural and is based to damage China. India is very adroitly playing double game.
Why India refused the offer of Trump as an arbitrator. Simply, because India has no legal base and stand on Kashmir Issue. On the coming American election Mr. Joe Biden of Democratic Party is assessing and weighing the scales and jockeying between Indian- American and Pakistani- American vote bank. It is imperative for overseas Pakistanis to take part in the local politics of the countries they live in and fight for the cause of Pakistan and Kashmir and nullify Indian plans against Pakistan. Neither America nor any other Western country is serious about the plight of Kashmiris as it is not their cup of tea. They drink coffee and wine and we can only provide them a cup of tea. They boast on being democratic countries but support monarchies in Arab world to grind the axe. Petrol is dearer to them than human blood.
The high handedness and foolhardiness of Modi resulted in the tarnished image of India worldwide. One of its fallouts is that on July 15, 2020, much awaited signing of a high profile economic partnership agreement between the European Union and India could not materialize. Iran has also cancelled its pact on Chabahar Port with India and signed an economic pact with China. It is a way forward to opening new economic and strategic vistas between China, Iran and Pakistan. It is a happy omen for us and will strengthen our hands against India.
These two fallouts are the outcome of the hawkish policies of Modi on international front. Indian on-going border tensions with China have locked them in a military conflict in Eastern Ladakh. This is the right and ripe time that China, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey and SAARC countries should unite to contain Indian expansionist designs.
The inhuman treatment of Modi with the Indian Muslims also established him a racist and religious extremist in the world community. The president of European Council Charles Michal severely criticized India and protested against the “Citizenship Amendment Act” which discriminated the legislation of the Muslims. The European Union also expressed deep concern on the Indian illegal and undemocratic step in Kashmir and voiced against the violations of human rights in Kashmir. Shamelessly, the Indian Home Minister bragged rather brayed that India will conquer the territories comprising Azad Kashmiri, Gilgat-Baltistan and Aksai Chin. This statement is a warning to Pakistan and China.
Pakistan should confront India on two fronts and like a two edged dagger pierce its pride into pieces. Its arrogance will be buried in the ditches and dykes of nonentity. First; on the diplomatic front through our embassies, we should launch a gigantic movement against India and seek the succour of our friends on diplomatic front. Second; we need to form a Block under the Leadership of China and break India as she broke Pakistan in 1971 and turned East Pakistan into Bangladesh. India is bound to disintegrate in to further two parts. Only planning is required. “Khalistan “in East Punjab for Sikhs and “Islamistan” of UP and Muslim majority areas in India. To avert the strike of nuclear war and escape from the imminent Volcano of Kashmir, it is imperative to dismember India.
