DSGVO

Nur noch wenige Tage dann ist sie da: Die Datenschutzgrundverordnung kurz #DSGVO. Wie so viele kümmere ich mich auf den letzten Drücker darum, was das für mich kleinen Blogger bedeuten könnte – und wie so viele habe ich keinen blassen Schimmer.

Blog dichtmachen oder Ruhe bewahren?

Ausführungen zu den genauen Hintergründen sowie zu Sinn und Zweck der DSGVO lasse ich an dieser Stelle mal weg. Das wird und wurde allüberall ausführlich erörtert und kann nach kurzer Googlesuche nachgelesen werden. Nur soviel: Ich glaube durchaus, dass dieses Ding im Grundsatz etwas Gutes ist. Darüber, ob und wenn ja welche Auswirkungen die DSGVO auf Blogger hat, gehen die Meinungen sehr weit auseinander. Sie reichen von großer Gelassenheit bis zum panischen Dichtmachen der eigenen Blogs.

Ich tendiere eher zur Gelassenheit – bin aber aufgeschreckt genug, um mich ein wenig mit der Materie auseinanderzusetzen und hier und da Anpassungen an meinem Blog vorzunehmen. Nun verfolge ich mit meinem bescheidenen kleinen Auftritt ohnehin keinerlei wirtschaftliche Interessen, habe weder Banner noch Affiliatelinks eingebunden und habe daher auch nicht das geringste Interesse daran, irgendwelche Daten zu sammeln. Viele Daten aber sammelt man ja ganz automatisch – beziehungsweise tun das die durchaus nützlichen Plugins, die beispielsweise Spamkommentare verhindern oder die Zugriffszahlen messen. Und ja, IP-Adressen werden ganz ausdrücklich zu den personenbezogenen Daten gezählt. Oder man lässt durch eingebettete Videos zu, dass Dritte Daten auf der eigenen Seite sammeln. Bei Nichtbeachtung der neuen Vorgaben – die teilweise gar nicht so neu sind – sollen jetzt horrende Bußgelder oder Abmahnungen drohen, was man – ob die Angst nun berechtigt ist oder nicht – schon ganz gerne vermeiden möchte.

Was ist zu tun?

Das Netz ist voll mit Tipps und Ratgeberseiten. Da sich kaum ein Unternehmen da draußen rechtzeitig mit der Sache befasst hat, ist die Datenschutz-Rechtsberatung zur Zeit wohl auch ein recht lukratives Betätigungsfeld. Alles, was man so liest, steht immer unter dem Vorbehalt, dass es keine Rechtsgarantie beinhaltet. Zumal vieles tatsächlich auch erst einmal vor Gericht entschieden werden müsste. Was tatsächlich also werden wird, weiß im Detail noch niemand. Ein paar hilfreiche DSGVO-Checklisten für Blogs waren dennoch zu finden. Ganz vereinfacht gesagt läuft es darauf hinaus, dass man so wenig Daten wie irgend möglich sammelt, genau darauf hinweist, welche Daten man wo sammelt oder sammeln lässt, nach Möglichkeit immer ein Einverständniserklärungshäkchen vorschaltet, wenn man Daten sammelt, und stets in der Lage ist, Auskunft über die gesammelten Daten nebst Einverständniserklärung zu geben und diese auf Wunsch auch löschen kann.

Was mache ich?

Nichts einfacher als das, will man meinen. Zumindest da, wo man relativ bewusst Daten sammelt beziehungsweise entgegennimmt. Das wäre so etwas wie #Newsletter, Kontaktformulare oder Kommentare. Bei der Wahl des Statistiktools und anderer Plugins geht auch noch was. Schwieriger wird es, wenn man nicht beeinflussen kann, welche Logfiles der Hoster anlegt und wenn man gerne YouTube-Videos einbettet – wobei das Problem schon bei Avataren und Emoticons anfängt. Wie auch immer. Folgendes mach ich:

  • Kommentare nur noch mit Einverständniserklärung: Wer bei mir einen Kommentar hinterlassen will, muss Name und Mailadresse angeben – und die IP-Adresse wird gespeichert. Das geht von nun an nur noch mit Einverständniserklärungshäkchen. Dabei ist mir das Plugin WP GDPR Compliance behilflich, das sich auch merkt, wann die Einverständniserklärung gegeben wurde. EDIT: Das Plugin wird nicht mehr unterstützt und stellt wohl ein Sicherheitsrisiko dar. Daher musste ich es entfernen.
  • Sonst keine IP-Adressen speichern: Alle weiteren Plugins, die IP-Adressen speichern, habe ich entweder rausgeschmissen oder so eingestellt, dass sie es nicht mehr tun. Mein Statistik-Plugin Statify speichert ohnehin keine IP-Adressen. Meinem Broken-Link-Plugin Redirection habe ich das untersagt. Mein Anti-Spam-Plugin Antispam Bee schaut sich nur die Daten der Kommentatoren an. Den Abgleich mit externen Datenbanken habe ich ihm untersagt. Ob ich das Plugin künftig überhaupt noch brauche, ist ohnehin fraglich. Das Einverständnis-Häkchen hat bisher alle Spambots vor eine unlösbare Aufgabe gestellt.
  • Keine Emoticons: Wusste ich bisher auch nicht – #WordPress zieht sich die Emoticons von einer externen Seite, die dann wiederum Daten sammeln könnte. Man kann in den Einstellungen unter „Schreiben“ die Funktion aber abschalten. Dann wandelt er Smileys nicht mehr automatisch in Emoticons um. ;-)
  • Keine Avatare: Bei den Avataren gilt ähnliches. Vor allem wenn man die Verknüpfung mit Gravatar zulässt. An der Stelle lasse ich es aber mittlerweile drauf ankommen.
  • Google-Fonts: Sind wohl irgendwie auch böse. Ich wüsste jetzt aber nicht, dass ich die nutze. Oder tue ich das irgendwie unbewusst? EDIT: Dank mehrfacher Hinweise in den Kommentaren weiß ich nun, dass ich sehr wohl Google Fonts benutze – vermutlich ist mein Theme dran schuld. Julias Tipp, das Plugin Remove Google Fonts References zu bemühen, scheint geholfen zu haben – zumindest sieht die Schrift auf einmal anders aus. EDIT 2: Dank eines Hinweises und leidvoller Erfahrung des Herrn Rpunkt ist mir aufgefallen, dass obiges Plugin in einigen Fällen nicht alle Google-Fonts-Geschichten unterdrückt. Ein anderes Blog, das ich betreue, hat sie trotzdem noch in dem DNS-Prefetch-Gedöns gehabt. Das macht ein anderes Plugin namens OMGF offenbar besser. EDIT 3: Inzwischen lasse ich auch auf dieser Seite nur noch OMGF laufen.
  • Keine Logfiles: Bei meinem Hoster habe ich serverseitig die Möglichkeit, die Logfiles einfach abzuschalten. Davon habe ich Gebrauch gemacht.
  • Keine Social-Share-Buttons: Ja, Shariff-Wrapper oder die Heise-Lösung sollen ja beide datenschutzkonform sein. Aber ich habe sie einfach komplett rausgekickt. Benutzt bei mir sowieso keiner.
  • Einbettungen: Hier müsste ich dann allerdings ähnlich konsequent sein. Da ich aber über die Jahre extrem viele YouTube– und Vimeo-Videos sowie Tweets, #Instagram-, Imgur-, Soundcloud– und Reddit-Posts eingebettet habe, wäre ich für einen Tipp für ein Plugin, das das in einem Aufwasch erledigt, sehr dankbar. EDIT: Henning hat mich freundlicherweise auf das Plugin Embed videos and respect privacy hingewiesen. Funktioniert einwandfrei – allerdings nur für YouTube. EDIT 2: Ron hat mich mittlerweile auf das viel schickere Plugin WP YouTube Lyte hingewiesen, das ich von nun an nutze. EDIT 3: Noch viel besser ist Embed Privacy, das alle korrekt eingebetteten Fremdinhalte inklusive #Twitter, Imgur, YouTube etc. verbirgt.
  • Endlich auf HTTPS umgestellt: Hat jetzt nicht direkt mit der DSGVO zu tun, wird aber generell empfohlen und war bei mir auch längst überfällig.
  • Neue Datenschutzerklärung: Und schließlich habe ich meine Datenschutzerklärung etwas angepasst und lasse da jetzt größtmögliche Transparenz walten. Wie ich schon gehört habe, muss da aber wohl mindestens noch ein Hinweis auf meinen Hoster rein.

Hoffen wir das Beste

Ob ich damit jetzt vor fiesen Abmahntrollen gefeit bin, kann mir vermutlich niemand beantworten. Vielleicht habe ich an der ein oder anderen Stelle sogar mächtig übertrieben. Ich hoffe jedenfalls das Beste – und bin für jeden Tipp und Hinweis dankbar.

So geht entfreunden

Ich bilde mir ein, ziemlich umgänglich zu sein. Nicht nur im richtigen Leben, sondern auch online. Das führt dazu, dass ich in sozialen Medien selten unversöhnliche Gräben aufreisse und höchstselten entfreundet oder geblockt werde. Man könnte sich sogar auf den Standpunkt stellen, dass ein Journalist mit einer pointierten Meinung mehr anecken müsste. Denn klare Positionen einnehmen und von allen geliebt werden, das geht nun einmal nicht.

Immerhin: Vor Jahren habe ich es geschafft, von @freichgeist (bürgerlich: Markus Felber) geblockt zu werden. Das allerdings noch nicht einmal wegen einer öffentlich ausgetragenen Meinungsverschiedenheit, bei der ich es ihm so richtig gezeigt und er als schlechter Verlierer nur noch eins zu tun wusste.

Nein, es ging um einen Retweet. Ich weiss den Inhalt nicht genau, aber weil ich noch einen kurzen eigenen Kommentar dazu schreiben wollte, habe ich den Tweet auf eine Weise gekürzt, die ihm nicht gefiel. Heute wäre das kein Problem, weil man Tweets zitieren kann: Der Originaltext bleibt erhalten, und man hat fast die volle Zeichenzahl (280 statt wie damals nur 140) für seinen eigenen Senf zur Verfügung. Man kann also sagen, dass dank des technischen Fortschritts die Welt auf Twitter eine friedlichere ist. Bzw. wäre, wenn es auf Twitter nicht so viele Idioten gäbe.

Frech- oder vielleicht doch kleingeistig?

Was nun @frechgeist angeht, habe ich mich, wie ich das auch im richtigen Leben getan hätte, entschuldigt. Doch das hat ihn nicht gerührt – weswegen ich heute dazu neige, ihn für mich @kleingeist zu nennen.

Aber darum geht es heute gar nicht. Sondern um den Fall von Facebook, wo mich das Schicksal des Entfreundetwerdens neulich ereilt hat. Und dieses Mal offenbar tatsächlich wegen unterschiedlicher Ansichten. Eine Dame hat mir den sozialmedialen Laufpass gegeben, mit der ich mich vorher oft und leidenschaftlich über Nobillag und die libertäre Weltanschauung gestritten habe. Was nun genau der Grund für die Trennung war, weiss ich nicht. Vielleicht hat sie im Nerdfunk gehört, wie ich eine Metaebene zu dieser Debatte aufgemacht habe.

Natürlich unter Wahrung der Anonymität und alles. Trotzdem könnte ich verstehen, dass ihr das nicht gefallen hat. Wobei auch dann wäre die beste Reaktion, das zu thematisieren. Und sich dann von mir gleich in eine Sendung einladen zu lassen, weil IMHO sowohl die Ebene als auch die Metaebene ein interessantes Gesprächsthema ergeben hätten. Oder es war ein Akt der Nächstenliebe. Denn die Debatten waren zeit- und kräfteraubend, ohne dass viel dabei herumgekommen wäre.

Facebook verschweigt, wenn man entfreundet worden ist

Aber darum geht es heute auch nicht. Aufgefallen ist mir, dass erstens Facebook einem in kleinster Weise sagt, wenn man entfreundet worden ist. Ich verstehe, warum: Herr Zuckerberg will, dass alle Nutzer möglichst viel Zeit auf Facebook verbringen und sich dort maximal wohlfühlen. Wenn man entfreundet oder sogar blockiert wird, trübt das die Laune. Und die schlechten Gefühle könnten auch auf Facebook abfärben. Ein Sensibelchen, das zwei-, dreimal hintereinander abserviert wird, könnte sich sogar entschliessen, seinerseits Facebook in die Wüste zu schicken. Und das darf natürlich nicht passieren, findet Herr Zuckerberg.

Was meines Erachtens von Unreife zeugt. Wenn das Befreunden dazu gehört, dann ist auch das Entfreunden unvermeidlich. Abgesehen davon findet man es sowieso heraus, wenn man mit der fraglichen Person intensiv kommuniziert hat, so wie das bei mir der Fall war: Wenn ich mich nicht mehr zweimal täglich über ein hanebüchenes Argument der Nobillag-Initianten aufregen muss, dann fällt mir die plötzliche Ruhe natürlich auf. Da könnte Facebook auch gleich eine Benachrichtigung loslassen mit dem Inhalt: «Frau Hugentobler legt keinen Wert mehr auf Kontakt mit dir. Sie lässt ausrichten, es liege an ihr, nicht an dir.»



Falls der eingebettete Inhalt fehlt, kann er hier angeschaut werden.

Aber selbst darum geht es in diesem Blogpost nicht. Worum es mir geht, ist das: Wenn man entfreundet wurde, dann hat man keinen Zugriff mehr auf die Beiträge und Kommentare, die man mit der Entfreunderin ausgetauscht hat. Auch die Nachrichten beim Messenger sind weg. Zumindest selbst sieht man sie nicht mehr.

Man sieht seine eigenen Inhalte nicht mehr

Ob sie bei der Entfreunderin selbst noch vorhanden sind, weiss ich nicht, aber ich vermute nicht. Das ist einer der Gründe (nebst dem einzelnen Löschen von Kommentaren), weswegen man bei Facebook immer wieder auf Threads stösst, wo offensichtlich nur noch die eine Seite der Konversation vorhanden und die andere fehlt. Auch das ist unbefriedigend. Wieso nicht die Beiträge stehen lassen und zum Beispiel mit «Gelöschter/Entfreundeter Nutzer» anschreiben?

Ich habe nun wie angedeutet, einiges an Zeit in die Diskussion gesteckt und, so bilde ich mir ein, auch das eine oder andere gute Argument ins Feld geführt. Es könnte nun durchaus passieren, dass ich das eine oder andere noch einmal benutzen möchte. Doch das ist nicht möglich, weil sie nicht mehr existieren oder für mich nicht mehr zugänglich sind.

Und das ist ein starkes Stück und zeigt, dass man bei Facebook nicht Herr seines eigenen Contents ist. Ob die verschwundenen Beiträge nun wichtig oder irrelevant, hohe Literatur oder Trash waren, ist völlig nebensächlich: Es sind meine Gedanken, die mir hier weggenommen werden – und das mag ich überhaupt nicht.

Reprendre, c’est voler

Damit bin ich wieder bei der Unreife: Dieser Zuckerberg kapiert einfach nicht, wie Beziehungen funktionieren. Wenn man auseinandergeht, dann dividiert man den Besitz auseinander. Jean-Jacques Goldman hat einmal ein schönes Stück dazu gemacht: «Reprendre, c’est voler», hiess das.

Das ist eine gute Handlungsanweisung, selbst wenn die Facebook-Beziehung im Vergleich virtuell, oberflächlich und letztlich eine Randnotiz war. Man nicht nur eine Benachrichtigung erhalten, dass man entfreundet wurde, sondern auch sein ganzes Zeugs, Texte, Fotos, Kommentare, mit einem Schleifchen umwickelt, zurückerhalten. Damit man es selbst wegwerfen oder in die Kiste legen kann, wo man Lebenserfahrung in materieller Form versorgt.

Es gibt verschiedene Gründe dafür, während eines Vortrags zu twittern: 1) Es ist ein twitternswertes Zitat gefallen. 2) Es muss irgend etwas anderes Wichtiges genau jetzt gesagt werden. 3) Der Vortrag ist ziemlich langweilig, man sucht Ablenkung. 4) Der Vortrag ist zwar nicht langweilig, aber zu langsam und zäh präsentiert. 5) Irgend etwas anderes.

Dass ich gerne und viel Podcasts höre ist auf diesem Blog schon ab und zu angeklungen, und einige Leute wissen auch, dass ich Podcasts gerne schneller höre, also z.B. mit 1,5- oder 2-facher Geschwindigkeit. Manche Menschen finden das komisch, nicht normal, respektlos oder einfach auch falsch.

Da mein eigener PKW zur Zeit in Reparatur ist habe ich die Chance mal einen anderen Wagen zu fahren. Vom Autohaus habe ich einen Hyndai i10 gestellt bekommen. Mit 25000 km ist der Wagen eingefahren und so bin ich mal etwas schneller gefahren auf dem Stück Autobahn. Bis knapp über 150 km/h habe ich den i10 beschleunigen können. The Painter Goblin Visits The Met’s Top Ten

Inspired by a Creative Commons (CC) blog the Painter Goblin decided to tackle the top-ten visual artworks at The Met Museum (July 2017).

The blog discusses how folks are using CC search to find works held at The Met. The Painter Goblin has been using Wikidata to similar effect – an exploration – a technique grounded in happenstance to discover and understand art held in the fantastic list of institutions that make it available on the Wikidata/Wikimedia service. With little exception, The Painter Goblin cannot replace the original works but hopes that visually interesting/stunning remixes when they appear inspire others to indulge in their own discovery and works of creation.

Apples Video-Wunder-App – und die Alternativen.

Apple hat letzten Monat nicht nur neue iPads angekündigt, sondern auch die Video-App Clips. Nun kann man sich fragen, was die Motivation ist. Apple hat bereits eine schöne Video-App im Portfolio: iMovie heisst sie, und ich nutze sie gern. Wenn man die neue App ausprobiert, dann stellt man allerdings sofort fest, dass Clips (kostenlos) eine andere Klientel anspricht als iMovie. iMovie orientiert sich an den klassischen Videoschnittprogrammen, mit denen man mehrere Aufnahmen zu einem kleinen Filmchen zusammenbaut.

Clips dagegen ist eher eine Kamera-App, mit der man ein paar bewegte Schnappschüsse macht, die mit Effekten versieht und dann bei Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat oder WhatsApp postet. Apple will, so mein Eindruck, bei dem neusten Hype dabei sein. Das sind die «Meine Story»-Funktionen, die es zuerst bei Snapchat gab, und die man nun überall sieht: Bei Facebook und dem Facebook Messenger und sogar bei Excel.

Also ein leicht durchschaubarer Versuch, bei der Jugend zu punkten. Ich habe zwar keine Zahlen dazu, aber ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass allein wegen des Preises bei der jüngeren Generation Apple-Telefone weniger begehrt sind als die billigen Android-Teile. Das wäre auf Dauer ein grosser Nachteil für Apple. Denn Leute bleiben ihrem ersten Betriebssystem treu – wie Apple genau weiss, wo die Macs an Schulen noch immer grosse Verbreitung haben.

Die Clips App hat eine wirklich tolle Funktion zur Untertitelung. Die hätte ich gern in Final Cut: Dann wäre es ein leichtes, Varianten meiner Videos für Facebook zu produzieren – denn die Videos werden meistens ohne Ton gehört. Die Effekte sind halbherzig ausgefallen. Vermutlich inspiriert von der Prisma-App, aber ohne dieses Vorbild zu erreichen oder gar zu übertreffen.

Die Latte liegt hoch

In Sachen Effekte liegt die Latte inzwischen sehr hoch. Snapchat hat damit angefangen, in Echtzeit hingerechnete Tiergesichter, Hüte, aus dem Mund schiessende Feuerfontänen und vieles mehr aufs Gesicht zu rechnen. Inzwischen findet man solcherlei auch bei Facebook und bei der Stand-Alone-App MSQRD (Sauglattismus in App-Form). Um da noch zu verblüffen, reichen ein Comic- und ein Scherenschnitt-Filter nicht aus.

Fazit: Es geht noch besser. Und deswegen stelle ich im Video nebst iMovie auch noch Splice, Premiere Clips und Pinnacle Studio vor – drei Apps, die alle etwas mehr hergeben, als Clips, zumindest, wenn man nicht bloss selbstverliebte Clips mit der Selfie-Kamera drehen möchte.

Übrigens: Auf Twitter wurde kritisiert, im Video würden nur Apps für iOS vorgestellt. Das stimmt in dem Fall leider tatsächlich. Ich gebe mir jeweils Mühe, möglichst beide grossen Betriebssysteme zu berücksichtigen.

Life and death in the courtrooms of America

It sometimes comes as a shock to people that the only country in the Americas which still has the death penalty is the USA.  It is especially favoured by the southern states such as Louisiana, Texas and Florida and we have on many occasions on this blog mentioned particular cases where the wrong man is convicted of a crime or where the evidence is at best doubtful.

Our view here in the UK of the justice system in America is heavily conditioned by Hollywood films, on screen or on TV, which give a highly biased view of the real life situation.  In these depictions, an innocent man or woman has been wrongfully arrested.  Clean cut lawyers appear for the defendant and there is a tense meeting in the DA’s office.  At some point, the defence (or defense if you’re reading this in the USA) lawyer says ‘we’re outa here’ and they all sweep out.  Hearings, such as a Grand Jury happen as if by magic and subsequent court appearances take place soon after.  Few episodes can go by without a lawyer saying someone’s ‘Miranda rights have been infringed’ and more people sweep out.  Everyone is dedicated to securing justice with the exception of one individual (a witness, police officer or someone needed for the plot) who is found out at the end.  More clean cut young people find a tiny and crucial piece of evidence and this is sufficient to set a defendant free, often in the last minute or so of the trial.  The overall impression is of a system that works – albeit uncertainly at times – with the good guy getting off at the end.

If you read Clive Stafford Smith’s book Injustice * you will find that these Hollywood stories are for many in the States, fiction.  Clive has spent many years in the USA helping people on death row, the majority of whom should not be there.  The book is about one individual, Krishna Maharaj (pictured), who was on death row in Florida for 28 years before being released.  It is a truly astonishing book with 110 pages of detailed notes and describes the dysfunctional legal system in states such a Florida.

The problem – bizarrely – is that an innocent man or woman is often more at risk that someone who is guilty.  Innocent people believe, often wrongly to their cost, that they don’t have to prove anything because they are innocent.  There cannot be any evidence to prove they did it because they didn’t.  They also think that the justice system is unbiased and the truth will out eventually, a ‘touching faith’ as Clive describes it.

The book explores these issues in great detail.  America elects its law officers and so there is great pressure to convict to prove to the electorate that you are ‘tough on crime’.  Sentencing people to death is a great way to prove this.  Unlike recent changes to the justice system in the UK, the defence has no right of disclosure.  So the police need only present evidence allegedly proving guilt, and not reveal evidence that proves the defendant innocent.  This practice was also commonplace in the UK before new rules were introduced following some high profile injustices were discovered.  In Florida, because of the enormous amount of money flooding in to the state from the drug barons, corruption is rife throughout the justice system.  Amazingly, the judge himself in Krishna’s trial was arrested for bribery and corruption after three days of hearings.  The police are often themselves involved in the drugs trade.

So if the judge was arrested, then surely the trial should start afresh?  No, because defence lawyers are paid so little and on a block fee basis, to start again is something they cannot afford, so they just ploughed on with a new judge.   The quality of defence lawyers is frequently poor and they fail to cross-examine properly, call relevant witnesses or even to meet the defendant that often.  The problem here is that if through incompetence or otherwise the defence lawyer does not raise the issues at trial, then appeal courts will rule matters to be ‘procedurally barred’ subsequently.

So alibis are not called, forensic evidence not challenged, police witnesses’ changes in evidence not challenged and so on and so on.  The result was an innocent man narrowly escaping death row for a crime he did not commit and which was committed it was eventually discovered, by someone acting for a drug cartel.  The man murdered was ‘skimming’ drug profits.  Errors are so great and so frequent that justice would better be served if it was done on the basis of a coin toss.  Fewer would be executed on this basis.

Clive Stafford Smith is an extraordinary lawyer but he is also a great story teller and this account of Kris Maharaj death row case is a powerful thriller beautifully told.  Helena Kennedy QC [senior lawyer in the UK]

Those Who Defied The Sovereignty Of Pakistan

Addressing the constituent assembly of Pakistan (including the present-day Bangladesh) on August 11, 1947, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah said,

‘The first and the foremost thing that I would like to emphasize is this: remember that you are now a sovereign legislative body and you have got all the powers.’

The point is mentioned at least three times in the speech, acknowledging the assembly as a ‘Sovereign assembly’ and ‘a full and complete sovereign body as the Federal Legislature of Pakistan.’

In less than seven years, this very sovereignty of the assembly had been repudiated by almost every school of thought in the new state. This is arguably the most shocking aspect of the history of Pakistan, and yet it is the least discussed (possibly because everybody who mutinied against the state has become a hero by now).

In April 1948, Chaudhry Rahmat Ali arrived in Lahore from Cambridge and announced through a newspaper that his aim was ‘a complete repudiation’ of the partition plan through which Pakistan had been created.

In October the same year, Abul Aala Maududi and two of his associates had to be charged with sedition and arrested under the Public Safety Act. They remained behind bars till May 1950.

The members of the Congress Party, representing some of the non-Muslim constituencies, undermined the authority of the assembly from within on many occasions. In March 1949, they demanded that religion should not be mentioned in the constitution because, in their opinion, this was contrary to a famous statement of the Quaid (‘you may belong to any religion or caste or creed; that has nothing to do with the business of the State’). They failed to acknowledge that the Quaid himself had asked the assembly to act as a greater authority than him.

In 1951, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, many other members of Pakistan Communist Party and some army personnel were found guilty of plotting to overthrow the government, kidnap the Prime Minister and the cabinet, murder senior security officers and bring a totalitarian revolution by using military force.

In February 1952, a vilification campaign against PM Khawaja Nazimuddin was launched by Inayataullah Mashriqi, was soon taken over by religious organizations like Majlis-i-Ahrar and was eventually joined by Jamaat-i-Islami and several other ‘ulema’ including Syed Suleman Nadvi and Mufti Muhammad Shafi. Initially complaining about issues like the shortage of food items, the agitators moved on to press three religious demands, i.e. the Ahmadis should be declared non-Muslims, the Ahmadi Foreign Minister should be sacked and all Ahmadis should be removed from higher posts in the government.

While refusing to accept the demands, the PM made it clear to the agitators that they were trespassing on the jurisdiction of the assembly. Undeterred, they launched ‘direct action’ against the government in January 1953. Riots followed and resulted in loss of life, especially in Punjab, where an S.H.O. of the police was lynched to death inside the historic Wazir Khan Mosque in Lahore. The army was called to restore order on March 5.

Using these events as pretext, and with support from the military leadership, Governor-General Ghulam Muhammad dismissed the PM and appointed in his place Muhammad Ali Bogra, who was Pakistan’s ambassador in US at that time (and believed to be ‘pathetically pro-American’). Thus the assembly was stripped of an important aspect of its sovereignty, i.e. the authority to choose the PM and to keep him or her in office as long as it pleases the majority in the house.

Although the possibility of foreign involvement in the matter was suggested by an English newspaper of Karachi as early as the summer of 1952, it seems that nobody has noticed the striking similarity between these events and ‘Operation Ajax’, an undercover activity of MI6 and CIA in Iran around the same time. According to Kermit Roosevelt, the senior CIA officer in charge of this operation, it was based on ‘four lines of attack’:

  1. first, the popularity of PM Mossadegh would be undermined through a campaign in mosques, the press and the streets;
  2. military officers loyal to the Shah would deliver the decree dismissing the PM;
  3. mobs would take control of the streets; and
  4. General Zahedi, a loyalist, would emerge to be nominated by the Shah as the new prime minister.

There is an obvious parallel in the events that led to the dismissal of Nazimuddin in Pakistan, except that (b) and (c) occurred in the reverse order. There is no direct evidence, but the similarity tempts us to think that if the same foreign agencies did not stage-manage the events in Pakistan, they must have learnt something here to be repeated in the neighbouring country a few months later. The final outcome was the same in both cases. A civilian dictator willing to serve the British or American interests got rid of a PM supported by the majority in the house, was able to replace him with an avowedly pro-American person of no political standing, and succeeded in marginalizing the assembly.

The official report of the inquiry about the disturbances in Pakistan, commonly called the Munir Report and published by the autocratic regime of Ghulam Muhammad in the summer of 1954, called it unrealistic to think that ‘any Foreign Power would attach or has any need to attach so much importance to Pakistan as to consider it worth their while to run the risk of being caught meddling with its domestic affairs’ (p.76).

The issue of sovereignty was discussed at length in the report but the term was never linked directly with the constituent assembly, thus paving the way for the eventual dissolution of the assembly that happened soon afterwards with the full blessing of the main author of report.

On October 24, 1954, Governor-General Ghulam Muhammad dismissed the assembly. At the end of the legal battle that ensued, a full bench of the highest court in the country, headed by Chief Justice Muhammad Munir, ruled on March 21 that it was ‘a mistake to suppose that sovereignty in its larger sense was conferred upon the Constituent Assembly.’

It still belonged to the Crown of Great Britain and the assembly ‘lived in a fool’s paradise if it was ever seized with the notion that it was the sovereign body in the State.’ The only member of the bench to disagree was Justice R. A. Cornelius (later the Chief Justice of Pakistan).

Resilio Sync? Hat bei mir eingeschlagen


Der Komfort der Cloud – aber ohne Risiko!

Meistens thematisiere ich in den Patentrezept-Videos Apps oder Arbeitsweisen, die sich in meinem Alltag längst bewährt haben und die ich daher guten Gewissens empfehlen kann. Manchmal ist es auch umgekehrt: Da habe ich dank einem Video die Gelegenheit, meine eigene Arbeitsweise zu verbessern. Das war bei diesem Video zu Resilio Sync¹ der Fall. Ich habe mit maege in der letzten (schon vor einiger Zeit aufgezeichneten) Digital-Sendung über Resilio Sync gesprochen. Daraufhin war klar, dass sich das Thema hervorragend für ein Video eignet. Und nachdem ich die Software dafür ausprobiert habe, setze ich sie jetzt routinemässig und gerne ein.

Nur bedingt ein Ersatz fürs NAS

Da ich kein NAS habe, verwende ich sie nicht als Ersatz für Dropbox und OneDrive. Über diese beiden Dienste halte ich Daten bereit, die ich jederzeit von irgendwelchen Geräten her im Zugriff haben will. Es sind alles unbedenkliche Daten, was die Privatsphäre angeht. (Die meisten sind sowieso zur Veröffentlichung gedacht.)

Aber der Datenabgleich zwischen den Geräten – der Foto-Upload vom Smartphone und der Austausch grosser Videodateien zwischen Mac und Windows – wird dadurch sehr viel einfacher. Das Übertragen aller Fotos vom iPhone auf den Compi ist über das lokale Netz rasend schnell. Und ich spare es mir, das iPhone per USB-Kabel anhängen und in einer Bildverwaltungs-App kopieren zu müssen – abgesehen davon, dass in meinem speziellen Fall noch ein weiterer Umweg nötig war, weil ich das iPhone mit dem Mac synchronisiere, die Bilder aber auf dem Windows-PC archiviere.

Zweiter Fall: Wenn ich einen auf meinem Windows-PC aufgezeichneten Screencast zur Weiterverwendung in Final Cut auf den Mac verfrachten will, dann musste ich bisher im Finder ein Windows-Laufwerk mounten, die Videodatei dorthin kopieren und am Mac abgreifen. Eine vergleichsweise lästige Angelegenheit. Ist Resilio Sync einmal eingerichtet, brauche ich die Videodatei nur im synchronisierten Ordner abzulegen, und schon taucht sie auf dem Mac ein und kann in Final Cut importiert werden. (Nett wäre jetzt noch eine Möglichkeit, die Clips aus diesem Ordner gleich automatisch in Final Cut zu importieren. Aber dafür habe ich bislang noch keine gute Lösung gefunden.)

Eine Zwischenlösung für die private Cloud mit dem Raspberry Pi

Fazit: Ich werde dank Resilio Sync nicht meinen kompletten Arbeitsfluss über den Haufen werfen. Jedenfalls nicht, bis es nicht einen Raspberry Pi mit USB 3 gibt, mit dem ich mir einen Bittorrent-Sync-Server basteln kann. Dann würde ich meine Cloud-Nutzung schon gern ein gutes Stück zurückfahren.

1) Nachtrag Mai 2017 In einer ersten Fassung des Beitrags war von Bittorrent Sync die Rede. Da das Produkt im Mai 2017 von Bittorrent Sync nach Resilio Sync umbenannt worden ist, habe ich die Benennung hier im Beitrag angepasst.

Eine Begründung für die Namensänderung habe ich nicht in Erfahrung bringen können. Wahrscheinlich war die Verwechslungsgefahr mit dem anderen Bittorrent-Protokoll einfach zu gross. ↩

Cheap Max7219 Chainable LED Matrix

I can’t resist a cheap LED matrix, so when I stumbled across these 8×8 LED matrix displays with a Max7219 driver LED in this chainable form-factor for, get this, less than £1.50 each from electrodragon.com … well, I had to give them a go.  It is a relatively simple circuit board to build, so there are very minimal instructions, but there are still a couple of gotchas that might catch out a beginner, so I’ve put together these notes whilst putting them together.  By the way, I ordered 9 so I could eventually form a 24×24 LED square (3×3 of the matrices).

I started with the headers, then the discrete components, finally the chip.  The only thing to note is the polarity of the electrolytic capacitor (of course – look for the + on the circuit board) and the orientation of the chip itself.  Also note that ‘pin 1’ of the LED matrix sockets are indicated by a square pad in the top right of the circuit board (as seen from the top, with the writing the right way up).  It is worth fiddling with the electrolytic prior to soldering to try to ensure it doesn’t poke out over the top edge of the circuit board – although if it does, if physically mounting boards next to each other, it will quite happily overlap into the next board.

The design suggests that all the header pins face upwards and that the jumpers are used on the top of the board to chain them together.  however, I didn’t really want to have to take off the LED matrix every time I wanted to change how it was linked, so I opted to solder the connecting header pins to the underside of the board as shown.  It also gets around the issue they describe on the product webpage about the LED matrix not really fitting snugly on the board.  Mine fits nice and tight.

So all that remains is to add the LED matrix.  As I said, pin 1 should be indicated on the matrix itself and is indicated on the circuit board by the square pad near the electrolytic capacitor.

In terms of making the thing work, it is relatively simple to connect up:

  • CLK – D2
  • LD – D3
  • DIN – D4
  • VCC – VCC
  • GND – GND

Of course when chaining with jumpers DOUT goes to the next LED DIN.  The other pins pair up.

I used the code from here to test my setup – http://playground.arduino.cc/LEDMatrix/Max7219 – as written this assumes the same pinouts as I describe above (i.e. CLK, LD, DIN on digital pins 2, 3 and 4).

You just need to set the number of chained displays at the top:

int maxInUse = 9;

(in my case) and get to work playing.  The routines in the library provide a simple interface to setting rows on a single or all of the chained displays.  maxSingle is meant for when there is just one display.  maxAll displays the same value on all displays in the chain.  maxOne will target a specific display (starting with display number 1 up to your last – 9 in my case).

As you can perhaps see, this is using an Ardunio nano.  With 9 boards cascaded, getting the PC to recognise the nano was plugged in was sometimes a problem – it often gave me a ‘there is a problem with your USB device’ error on Windows 7.  It was fine with lesser numbers of matrices, so I guess there is a power issue with the nano struggling with the USB setup and initialising all 9 LED matrices at the same time.  Temporarily disconnecting VCC from the LEDs when plugging in the USB seems to solve the issue for me.

As I eventually want to be setting an entire row of LEDs in a larger grid, the maxOne function is a little wasteful as it has to shunt null values to all of the LED displays you are not targeting – so calling it 9 times means writing 81 bytes out across the DIN pin just to actually set 9 bytes.  Consequently it is possible to optimise it a little if you want to write an entire row to all displays in the same transaction.

Of course, if you refer back to the LedMatrix page, there are many other libraries that will do most of this for you, including Marco’s very complete library for scrolling text displays – http://parola.codeplex.com/ – but I quite like being able to see what the low-level code is actually doing to make things work.

I’ve therefore added a maxRow function as follows:

But I haven’t mentioned the absolutely best feature of these little boards yet.  And that is that they are almost exactly the same dimension as a 4-stud Lego brick.  This means it was trivial to make a simple enclosure to hold my 3×3 grid and the nano.

I now have a really cool game-of-life running on my 24×24 LED grid.  At this price, I have another 8 on order so I can take it to a 4×4 grid (with one spare).

The thing is, though, even though it’s tempting to think of algorithms as the very definition of objective, they’re not. “It’s not really possible to have a completely neutral algorithm,” says Jonathan Bright, a research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute who studies elections. “I don’t think there’s anyone in Google or Facebook or anywhere else who’s trying to tweak an election. But it’s something these organizations have always struggled with.” Algorithms reflect the values and worldview of the programmers. That’s what an algorithm is, fundamentally. “Do they want to make a good effort to make sure they influence evenly across Democrats and Republicans? Or do they just let the algorithm take its course?” Bright asks.

Scary to think about the implications – intentional or not – of skewed search result data. Ultimately, people are building these algorithms and even if their intent is truly ‘good’, the possibility of pushing people one way or another is real. On a somewhat related note, there was a good Atlantic article last fall about a similar concern with Facebook.

Storing Raspberry Pi Wi-Fi Network Settings on the SD Card

Connecting to a Raspberry Pi out of the box would be so much easier if it had an UART bridge at the USB power connection. One would simply plug it in the computer and it would show up as a virtual serial port. It would probably also add approximately $1.50 to the price of the RPi.

My current setup uses a $5 UART over Bluetooth module attached to the UART pins of Raspberry Pi. This way I get to see everything that happens right from the moment it powers up.

An alternative solution is to store the wireless network configuration file on the SD card which can then be edited from any computer that can read the SD card. One would simply move the config file from /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf to /boot/wpa_supplicant.conf and soft link or symlink it back to the original location like so:

mv /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf /boot/wpa_supplicant.confln -s /boot/wpa_supplicant.conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

where /boot is the location of the boot partition on the SD card.

Diese plumpen Vereinnahmungsversuche, für irgend jemanden Schleichwerbung zu betreiben – sie kommen immer wieder vor. Neulich hatte ich mal wieder eines dieser Mails in meiner Inbox, das mir via Kontakt-Link zugeschickt worden war:

Mein Name ist M.W. und ich bin für die Founderslink GmbH in Berlin tätig. Wir sind ein Inkubator für junge Unternehmen und haben u.a. Steganos, die erfolgreichste Security Software Firma Deutschlands mitgegründet. Derzeit fokussieren wir uns auf unser Jung-Projekt, ein Online-Test-Portal mit kostenlosen Produkttests. In diesem Zusammenhang suchen wir hochwertige Partner für eine Kooperation.

Mit großem Interesse laß ich Ihre Artikel rund ums Web. Mir fiel auf, dass Sie großen Wert auf guten Content legen. Ist es nun mein professioneller Zynismus, dass ich gleich misstrauisch wurde – oder vielleicht der Umstand, dass im Mail nicht erwähnt wurde, was für eine Gegenleistung man von mir erwarten würde? Eine «Kooperation» ist bekanntlich etwas anderes als ein Geschenk.

Ich hatte unmittelbar keine Lust, das herauszufinden, und schrieb zurück, was ich in solchen Fällen immer schreibe: «Vielen Dank für Ihr Angebot, aber wie die Unterzeile in meinem Blog (‹Hier bloggt der Chef persönlich›) verrät, nehme ich keine Texte zur Veröffentlichung an, weder gratis noch gegen Bezahlung. Ich bin Journalist von Beruf und wende die geltenden Standesregeln auch in meinem Blog an.»

Testsoftware nehme ich gerne, aber…

Das hat den Herrn aber nicht abgeschreckt:

Sie könnten auch gerne selbst einen Artikel verfassen. Es gäbe von unserer Seite die Möglichkeit Ihnen interessante Software für einen Test bereitzustellen.

Interessant könnte für Sie sicherlich ein Sicherheitspaket oder Programme wie der Webdesigner 10 von Magix oder auch der Foto und Grafik Designer [sein]. Wäre jetzt nur ein Vorschlag meinerseits, sollte dennoch kein Interesse bestehen bedanke ich mich auf diesem Wege für die rasche Rückmeldung.

Gut, gegen Testsoftware ist nichts einzuwenden. Ich bin als Journalist auf Leihgaben der Hersteller angewiesen, weil es das Budget nicht zulässt, die Produkte jeweils zu kaufen. Und als Blogger kann man von einem Budget für Testprodukte überhaupt nur träumen. Ich bin zwar kein grosser Fan der Magix-Produkte, aber da die weitverbreitet sind, mache ich nicht grundsätzlich einen Bogen um sie. Ich teilte das in meiner Antwort mit.

Es gibt keine Vorab-Zusagen und keine Veröffentlichungs-Garantie

M.W. meinte dann:

For future reference sei hier meine Antwort auf diesen Vorschlag festgehalten: «An Testsoftware geknüpfte Bedingungen kann ich nicht akzeptieren. Ich habe ja die journalistischen Richtlinien erwähnt, die ich auch beim Bloggen einhalte. Sie besagen, dass nur redaktionelle Weisungen zu befolgen sind (Punkt 10). Ich nehme konkret das Recht in Anspruch, über ein Produkt nicht zu berichten, wenn es sich beim Test als nicht relevant erweist.»

Ausserdem werde ich Netzsieger punkt Däh Äh hier in diesem Blog garantiert nicht verlinken, weil dort absolut tote Hose herrscht und faktisch keinerlei Zusammenhang zwischen meiner Besprechung zu dieser Plattform besteht. Das ist ein untauglicher Versuch, sich ins Gespräch zu bringen. Ich kann Anbieter mit solchen Maschen einfach nicht ernst nehmen: Macht doch eine tolle Plattform mit guten Inhalten, dann werden die Besucher schon kommen.

Und auch Blogger werden darüber schreiben, und zwar sogar, ohne dass sie mit Testsoftware bestochen worden sind. Denn Blogs wie dieses hier leben von guten Inhalten. Über gute Inhalte schreiben Blogger wie ich noch so gerne – gratis!

Man kann das Problem natürlich abtun: Bloggen ist nur ein Hobby. Was schadet es denn, wenn einer damit ein paar Rappen oder Pfennige, Pardon: Cents nebenbei verdient? Es gab bei früheren Diskussionen auch diejenigen, die mich ziemlich unverblümt als Trottel abgestempelt haben: «Was, du lehnst freiwillig Geld ab? Wie doof ist das denn?»

Es gibt auch geschickte Vereinnahmungsversuche

Aber so reagieren kann nur jemand, der das Wort Korruption noch nie gehört hat. Oder dem es egal ist, selbst ein wenig korrupt zu sein. Man kommt als Blogger nicht darum herum, sich Gedanke zu machen, für welche Formen der Unterstützung man offen ist und für welche nicht. Die Grenzziehung ist allerdings längst nicht immer so einfach wie beim Fall von M.W.. Schliesslich gibt es auch Unternehmen, die geschickter agieren – und um die man nicht einfach nonchalant einen Bogen machen kann, wenn sie einem dumm kommen.

Apple ist ein schönes Beispiel, was das angeht. Richard Gutjahr beschreibt im Beitrag Der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Bann die Mechanismen treffend. Apple würde niemals eine Forderung wie «Machen Sie mal einen Link zu apple.com unter Ihren Text!». Aber es ist schon klar, dass ein Testgerät mit der unausgesprochenen Aufforderung verknüpft ist, auch in entsprechendem Mass über Apple zu berichten.

Das stellt in der Praxis keinerlei Problem dar, da Artikel über Apple gern gelesen werden, mit hervorragenden Klickzahlen glänzen und Apple nach wie vor relevant genug ist, um mit journalistischer oder bloggerischer Aufmerksamkeit bedacht zu werden. Dennoch ist es eine Abhängigkeit, die sich für mich oft wie eine unsichtbare Fessel anfühlt.

Wie damit umgehen?

Klar: Indem man das Dilemma transparent macht. Bei mir ist das so: Ich gehe nicht auf Vereinnahmungsversuche wie die von M.W. ein, und ich mache sie gelegentlich publik (Warum man besser selber bloggt, Guten Tag, dürfen wir Sie kaufen?). Ich verwende Testsoftware und -produkte – aber nicht, wenn Bedingungen daran geknüpft sind. Bezahlung oder Aufwandsentschädigungen nehme ich nicht an und Produkte werden nach der Testphase zurückgeschickt oder gekauft.

Journalistenrabatt? Dauerleihgaben?

Da existieren auch die berühmt-berüchtigten Journalistenrabatte und die ebenso berühmt-berüchtigten Dauerleihgaben. Beide Unterstützungsformen sind grundsätzlich heikel, aber meines Erachtens in einzelnen Fällen zulässig.

Sie können die journalistische Arbeit verbessern, man sie für die Arbeit selbst einsetzt. Andererseits muss man, um auf der Höhe der Zeit zu bleiben, manche Gadgets auch einfach intensiv und längerfristig nutzen – ohne dass man deswegen das private Budget überstrapazieren sollte. Ich habe einige Dauerleihgaben im Einsatz (im Moment ein iPhone 6 und zwei iPads, plus ein älteres Surface Pro von Microsoft und einen Tolino Shine) und ich habe auch schon nach Journi-Rabatten gefragt. (Zum letzten Mal bei der im Beitrag Kamera für Selbstdarsteller) besprochenen Legria Mini, die mir Digitec mit zehn Prozent Nachlass verkauft hat.)

Klar – schöner wäre, wenn es ohne diese Unterstützung ginge. Und ja: Die Einnahmen durch die Adsense-Werbung und Flattr hier im Blog schaffen mehr Unabhängigkeit!

Das Blogger-Manifest, das Richtlinien fürs Bloggen postuliert.

Fazit: Ich finde gut, dass es das Blogger-Manifest gibt (siehe bzw. höre SRF-Medien-Talk). Das ist eine gute Diskussionsgrundlage. Aber letztlich muss sich jeder selbst Gedanken machen und einen Umgang mit der «Gegenseite» finden, den er vor sich und seinen Lesern rechtfertigen kann.

Villa d’Arte over #Reinbertbio: ‘Fantastisch graafwerk’

Terwijl ik aan het nagenieten was van de succesvolle lancering van de tweede druk van mijn biografie Reinbert de Leeuw: mens of melodie afgelopen zondag bij Concerto Amsterdam, ontving ik alweer een paar mooie nieuwe berichten. Zo bleek de NJO Muziekzomer een bericht te hebben gewijd aan de verschijning van de tweede druk.

Het tijdschrift Villa d’Arte publiceerde in zijn zomernummer een korte bespreking van het boek. ‘Het is een fantastisch graafwerk, dat niet alleen een bijzonder inzicht in leven en werk van De Leeuw geeft, maar ook in de ontwikkeling van het muzikale landschap van 1950 tot heden.’

Ook de Nederlandse Vereniging van Muziekbibliotheken besteedde in zijn nieuwsbrief aandacht aan de biografie. Het is vooral informatief van aard en geeft een korte bloemlezing uit eerder gepubliceerde recensies, waaronder een voor mij nog onbekende, van Els van Swol. Zij schreef voor NBD Biblion onder andere: ‘Het is een genuanceerd verhaal op basis van gedegen research, waarbij elke uitlating is gecheckt en gedocumenteerd en hoor en wederhoor is toegepast.’

En last but not least, Salomon Meij van ohmyfilm stuurde mij het filmpje van ons gesprek over het boek, dat plaatsvond op 12 juni j.l. in Meppel, waar ik te gast was voor de eerste lezing over mijn Reinbertbio in kunstencentrum Zael. Hij vraagt niet alleen naar het ontstaan van het boek en de controverse rond de publicatie, maar gaat ook in op het belang van Reinbert de Leeuw voor het Nederlandse muziekleven en van diens eigen composities. Preludium over biografie Reinbert de Leeuw: ‘Even boeiend als evenwichtig’

In het meinummer van het maandblad Preludium van het Koninklijk Concertgebouw en het Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest verscheen een korte bespreking van de biografie Reinbert de Leeuw: mens of melodie. Deze ‘schetst een even boeiend als evenwichtig beeld van een onvermoeibare muziekpionier’ en ‘leest als een trein’. Een twitteraar reageerde al dat de biografie ook prettig leest IN de trein 🙂

Ik ontving zojuist ook de video van mijn gesprek met Tjako Fennema in ‘De tafel van Tjako’, die zondag 11 mei werd uitgezonden door RTi! Hilversum. Het gesprek begint op 1’03.

Vrijdag 9 mei sprak ik met René de Cocq van De Stentor over mijn biografie, met name over Reinberts betrokkenheid bij de NJO Summer Academy, die hij in 2001 samen met Arthur van Dijk opzette. Het artikel verschijnt binnenkort, de exacte datum is nog niet bekend.

Afgelopen maandag had ik ook een mooi gesprek met Peter Gielissen van BijlageTV, die mijn boek goed had gelezen en prettig inhoudelijke vragen stelde. Ik hoor binnenkort wanneer dit wordt uitgezonden.

En vanmiddag dronk ik een kop koffie in het Amsterdams Stadsarchief  met Karin Merx, die daar onderzoek doet voor een boek over Edy de Wilde. Deze figureert ook in mijn biografie, omdat hij in 1965 de serie ‘Muziek van nu’ opzette in het Stedelijk Museum te Amsterdam waarvan hij de directeur was. Merx had de #Reinbertbio meegenomen om deze door mij te laten signeren en we gingen samen op de foto – voor een uitbundig lachende Reinbert de Leeuw.

And I’m like, Quotative ‘like’ isn’t just for quoting

One of the most noticeable changes in modern everyday English usage is the ascent of like in its various guises. Last week Michael Rundell at Macmillan Dictionary Blog briefly surveyed the development, noting that the word’s relatively recent use in reporting direct speech – known as quotative like – is “widely disliked by traditionalists”.

There are various reasons for the aversion. Any usage that becomes suddenly popular will attract criticism. Frequent use of like is also perceived as lazy, or associated with triviality. Facebook likes, filler likes (So, like, OK), and hedging or approximating likes (He was like six feet) serve only to underline how ubiquitous the word has become.

Like is like soooo divisive, and quotative like in particular is often misunderstood. If you search online for hate the word like or some such string, you’ll find plenty of knee-jerk antipathy to it that largely assumes its synonymity with said. That is, there’s a common misconception that I was like, [X] = I said, [X]. But often this is not the case, about which more shortly.

First, it’s worth noting that those of us who use quotative like use it in a range of tenses, for example past (She was like, “Let me know”), historical present (So last week he’s like, “Are we ready yet?” and we’re all like, “Yes!”), and future (If that happens I’ll be like, “Uh-oh.”).

This use of like, reporting direct speech more or less, became very popular in recent times with young people especially, though far from exclusively, establishing itself as a normal usage – even a dominant one in some groups. But with quotative like we can do more than simply report speech: we may convey an interaction with expansive social and performative detail.

As Jessica Love observed in the American Scholar a couple of years ago, quotative like

encourages a speaker to embody the participants in a conversation. Thus, the speaker vocalizes the contents of participants’ utterances, but also her attitudes toward those utterances. She can dramatize multiple viewpoints, one after another, making it perfectly clear all the while which views she sympathizes with and which she does not.

Quotative like has also undergone striking developments on the internet. Some users of social media are typing “I’m like” (or “I’m all like”, etc.) and following it with an image or image macro. It’s a meme-friendly playground of creativity in which the images themselves are being embedded in the syntax.

Offline we might say I’m like and make a caricatured facial expression; online, we use images instead to communicate those staged reactions. These funny, often self-deprecating tweets use instantly interpretable images to substitute for (and expand upon) those physical gestures, expressions, and body language that accompany ordinary speech but are difficult or impossible to replicate online.

Last month the NY Times quoted Robin Kelsey, a professor of photography at Harvard, who believes

This is a watershed time where we are moving away from photography as a way of recording and storing a past moment . . . [and] turning photography into a communication medium.

And not just photography but image macros, TV and film stills, comics, animated gifs, the whole gamut of shortform visual data we’ve been incorporating into online discourse. (Jessica Love has also pondered the possibilities of a language based on real-time images.) Who’s to say what will emerge from this hybrid domain?

Quotative like can set up a whole miniature drama, with visual content contributing to a richer vocabulary than words alone could license. Online and off, used with images or micro-performances, quotative like is not a lazy crutch of semi-literate teens but a handy and highly functional addition to our lexicon – and to our paralinguistic repertoire. No wonder it has caught on.

In ‘The Internet is a James Joyce Novel‘, Jessica Love at the American Scholar picks up on this post and ponders the spread of captioned images qua memes and their communicative uses:

[L]ike it or not, memes are playing an increasingly prominent role in public discourse. . . . The increasing ease with which we can combine language and pictures will only lead to further innovations.

From an excellent post by Arnold Zwicky on Language Log, December 2006:

[T]eenagers have been fond of discourse-particle uses of like for quite some time, at least 50 years; some people now in their 50s and 60s still use like this way. Meanwhile, quotative like has risen in 25 or 30 years to become the dominant quotative in the speech of young people (and some older speakers use it too). The result is that some young people are indeed heavy users of like in functions that some of their elders do not use it in. And many of these older speakers are annoyed as hell about that.

Zwicky further explores the sociolinguistic aspects of like, confirming its usefulness and examining why exactly some people dislike it so much. He finds that:

discourse-particle and quotative like have both linguistic value (they can be used to convey nuances of meaning) and social value (they’re part of the way personas and social-group memberships are projected).

Steven Poole reminded me of his post at Unspeak a few years ago taking Christopher Hitchens to task for a shallow denigration of quotative like:

he was like and he said do not actually mean the same thing; and Hitchens is like, I do not approve of this youthspeak that I have not made sufficient efforts to understand?

Mercedes Durham told me of research she and colleagues did on the “Constant linguistic effects in the diffusion of ‘be like’” (PDF).

They report on two studies of “change in social and linguistic effects on be like usage and acceptability”, and find “no evidence of change in linguistic constraints on be like [e.g., speaker age, tense, quote content] as it has diffused into U.K. and U.S. Englishes”.

Another development: ‘Like’ is an infix now, which is un-like-believably innovative.
