Dev-Log # 5.2 - Crafting UI progress
@esklarski and @pixelberk are working on crafting UI and shipbuilding.
The solar foundry can now toggle between producing ingots or steel plates and has a nice bounce animation when you add more yardies (workers).
The ship system now seems to scale nicely from 2 inventory slots to 27. Larger ships have two engines.

And this past couple of days, I have been integrating the walk animations into the project. I haven't dealt with the attack ones yet.
However, I did add some cool stuff to the project while adding the walk cycle:
- I wrote a little piece of code to handle "joystick bounce", which was causing the character to flip around when releasing the joystick in certain gamepads
- I wrote a little "inertia" mechanic, which rotates the character when it spins around.

In order to figure the answer to these questions, I needed an actual rigged model to put in the game.
Using Blender, I created a temporary model using primitives to match the expected character proportions, and then I made a skeleton for it.
After some trial and error, I got a rig that felt easy enough to work with, so I started animating the little monkey.

-Should the attack hitboxes be animated in blender as part of the character rig?
-Should I instead have 2 animators for my player character? The one from the rig plus an additional one that only animates hitboxes?
-Animations from rigs support events/callbacks just fine, but they are "removed" every time the asset is reimported. What's the best approach to handling animation events?
This is just some of the questions that would appear once I swapped the visuals of the player.

Before I added more mechanics to the game, I wanted to make some progress in the visuals department, specifically regarding the player character, as I was sure that was going to require revisiting some of the stuff I had already implemented.
For example, the attack hitboxes of the player were currently animated together with the blue capsule in Godot, which means the moment I replace the capsule for an actual rigged model I would have to redo how I animate them.

I, along with several others, are working as hard as we can to combat this. We're in the same boat here. But please, please, please, please understand that "this is really bad" does not help. "Nothing is happening :/" only makes me feel like shit because it feels like my extensive efforts are going absolutely nowhere. We're already fighting at odds from multiple fronts, so if you have any ideas that haven't already been tried PLEASE TELL ME, I GENUINELY WANT TO KNOW

I've seen a lot of people complaining about recent Matrix spam waves (as is understandable, it really is absolutely revolting), but then proceeding to blame it on the developer community for not dealing with it.
I'm sorry, but I can't hold my tongue on this any longer.
There ARE things happening. Moderation tooling is being spearheaded finally, but obviously this shit takes time to be developed, and unfortunately a lot of the immediate stuff is being made by smaller players like myself.
First off, please keep in mind that Synapse and Element are not the only components in the Matrix ecosystem. There are other server implementations, and other clients, and other organizations other than New Vector Ltd and matrix.org.
Here's a summary of the things I have PERSONALLY done over the past few months:
1. I have implemented the new Policy Servers MSC into Meowlnir (a from-scratch moderation tool), as Element's is still closed-source and request-to-use. I created this with very lacking specification docs, and had to reverse engineer some of it to make the policy server functional.
2. I created matrix-invite-logger to allow people to automatically log and also block incoming invites for accounts they have on servers they do not run, or when their server does not support synapse-anti-spam
3. I have added powerful moderation tooling to clients like Gomuks, and spend time trying to urge other client developers to implement support for additional moderation tooling in their clients when I haven't had the time to open PRs myself.
4. I have integrated registration checking into my bot's server info command so that I can see at a glance if a server is vulnerable to registration spam. I have used this to make contact with over a hundred server administrators already.
5. I have gone out of my way to engineer a server scraper that will (when it's finished) automatically scrape Matrix to find vulnerable servers, add them to a policy list to temporarily protect rooms from them, and will either automatically contact server admins or get me to do it, to tell them that they are vulnerable.
6. I have spent time contributing bug fixes to the most popular moderation bot on Matrix, Draupnir, used by communities like Ubuntu, Fedora, and OpenSUSE
7. With the abrupt archival of conduwuit, I have (together with a small team) forked it into continuwuity, where we are aiming to focus on trust & safety tooling, including my experimental and trailblazing appservice callbacks to allow regular appservices to filter spam
8. I have been pushing for room takedowns in the community moderation effort crowdsourced policy list, in order to get rid of these horrific rooms as soon as they crop up
9. I have been making extensive contact with the Matrix Foundation to see what's going on on matrix.org, and offer advice and give feedback on their moderation
10. I have developed a multi-account monitoring tool that currently watches a lot of public rooms for spam waves and automatically bans them before they propagate to other communities. I'm slowly getting other communities on board with this, and already have the support of several large FOSS projects
11. I have engaged in lengthy talks with ecosystem developers to ensure that moderation tooling is getting caught up to par.

After writing a couple of devlogs about this prototype on my website, I am now resuming work. I have started a couple of different things: health system, enemy attacks, some basic puzzles...
None of those things are done yet, so I won't go into details until I am happy about how everything is organised. However, I wanted to share this video about nailing because I think it is quite fun and interesting for game design.

I had the luxury of time & resources to get involved w/o having to worry about paying my bills.
Not everyone has that luxury. Growing the #Drupal community requires empowering developers who may not have the time and resources to create a new sandbox module from scratch just to earn the “opt into security coverage” privilege.
I explored Drupal while supporting Howard Dean's presidential campaign w/ time + resources including fast internet connection & servers capable of running DeanSpace.

I had the idea that writing to the SDCard for 250ms every few seconds was a bad idea
That is how long it took for SQLite to insert 1 row in 4 databases, roughly 80ms times 4
(I have four databases because the daily DB, the day before, the day after, and the huge all-time database)
So instead, I added a CSV buffer: incoming readings are appended to a flat file instead of immediately SQLite, and every 5 minutes, one of the nodes takes a hit to commit the CSV into the databases
The CSV append operation takes a few ms, usually 2ms but sometimes 5ms, so I'm happy about this part
The CSV to SQL operation takes about 8s when all 10 nodes are up (50 measurements to 4 databases), so that's a tad slower than I'd want but it happens once every 5 minutes so I guess that's ok?
(every SQL insert now takes about 40ms and there is probably still room for improvement)
And now I can keep a console with watch cat buffer.csv which is great, and more readable than my server logs
Here is a sequence of four batches as a demo (first CSV field is a timestamp, second is the node ID, and the rest are air quality readings from the BME680)

A few friends have created Twitch channels with what I like to call GPS for Skycars (aka ADS-B or Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast) for aircraft tracking and monitoring with live feed of their local airports.
If you're interested, check them out on Twitch. They'd love to chat with other folks interested. The stream chat is not always monitored, but is checked periodically throughout the day.

If the United States still exists in 2026, and if protests aren't illegal yet, I have a plan for possibly the biggest and most symbolic protest in American History. The plan is to hold a protest on 2026, July 4th, any time of the day would be fine. People can still light off fireworks (if they can even afford them) but this protest can be a massive symbolic move of American Unity. Why 2026? Because this date will mark 250 years since the United States Declaration of Independence. It is a very major number, it is a quarter of a millennium. I can't organize this protest alone. Let's get the word out, and make our voices heard!
A supplemental protest should also be held on 2025, July 4th, as that is closer, and still symbolic. How many times have been there been mass protests during the Fourth of July?

And when I say Kung Fu I mean making a basic Behaviour Tree in Godot 4. This past week I have been quite busy wrapping my head around it, as I struggled quite a bit understanding how to organise and separate the different bits of enemy logic in the project.
I made a simple AI (of the good variety) that consist of the different behaviours:
- Wander inside an area
- Detect Targets
- Chase
- Attack
- Flee
- Center the move area

New update: I have programmed some objects that have physics and can interact with the player attacks .
You can even aim an object towards another one, or an enemy (for now, I call enemy to the green sphere 😅) before hitting it with the hammer to make it fly towards it and cause some damage.

I finished working on the "aim assist" feature of the game. I recorded a short video using the keyboard to play so that you can see it in action, in the worst case scenario, when only moving in 8 directions.
As long as players are loosely looking at a target, the attack will aim automatically and land even while dolphin diving!

I updated a bunch of stuff in the project, especially split the single database that was getting way too big for SQLite + microSD to handle gracefully (more than 30s) and I updated the README with new screenshots
I’m now storing my sensor readings in two database files:
- the big one that I’ve been using from the start, but not using any more
- a new one that gets created each day, and that’s the one that the graphs are now using
This way, the daily databases are kept small, which makes querying them fast (mostly for the pretty graphs), and I also still have a giant single database for offline statistics (should I need that)

Alright, since the last update a couple of things have happened:
First, I added some hit boxes to the player character. Then I wrote a system that checks for collisions when using attacks. Lastly, I have been working on some "enemies" and some feedback effects to check whether hitting stuff with the hammer feels fun and rewarding.
It looks quite promising so far, but I have noticed that aiming at enemies can be tricky at times, so I am going to focus on fixing that next.

I updated the character controller to use a state machine as well, and I cleaned up the animation tree a little bit following advice from the replies.
Using the state machine for this controller has eased A LOT the development process. Less bugs, easier to scale and maintain. I can't wait to keep adding new stuff!
So far, since the last update, I added:
- Aerial attacks
- Hammer Throws
- Dolphin dives
- Momentum to certain player moves

I gave a little bit of thinking on the changes I want to do to #badgefed before making my server public.
The one who emits the badges, is a #fediverse actor, this should be no controversial, after all, I use the public/private keys to sign the badges itself.
But in the first prototype the recipient of the grant, was a record in the system itself. The idea was to allow recipients outside the fediverse to receive badges as well. I did not wanted to store the email, so I required a profile url, think of your fediverse url, or for those outside #linkedin, #blog, even #facebook if they want. However, it gets things a little bit more complex and less clean than what I want.
Today, I decided that the recipient MUST be an actor of the #Fediverse. That is, it, that will be embedded as a mention, and should be clean and neat. For those who are not in the fediverse, #badgefed will provide an actor (and profile url) where they can add basic information such name, and bio links. Or they can create an account in any of the fediverse platforms at the moment of receiving the badge.

Ingen har så langt kommentert det, men la merke for et par dager siden at siste video fra #FribygdaTV hadde en treghet i lyd i forhold til video, som mot slutten var på ca. 1 sekund.
Det tok lang tid å skjønne hva som var feilen. Det viste seg at jeg hadde angitt feil framerate for videoen, noe som førte til at den gikk bittelitt raskere enn lyden, og dette ble verre over spilletiden.
Problemet er nå fikset! På #PeerTube kan man enkelt bytte videofil, så heldigvis ikke behov for ny link!

I am creating a #ActivityPub minimalistic implementation of a badge system similar to Credly, built using #dotnet and leveraging the #Fediverse
I have issued a first badge, the idea is to decentralize the verification systems, and allow organizations to self-certify. It is incredible that organizations like Microsoft or Non-Profits pay thousands of dollars to companies like Pearson to just provide "verified" badges. Similar to mastodons installed in social-dot-something, thinkg of badges<dot> mozilla<dot>com , certifications<dot>myschooldistrict<dot>com. Or even a podcast emitting a badge for its guests, with the verification in the domain.
ActivityPub already offers a secure way to sign artifacts and interact between actors. The fediverse already have people with profiles, a social graph as @mike says, ready to use. Think of how LetsEncrypt disrupted that market of few actors selling certificates for websites.
I have a functional poc,
@fediverse is not a mastodon, pledora or blog, it is an actor in a badge system, but you can follow it in Mastodon. Its badges will show in #mastodon but they are not notes or articles. 🚨 SPAM WAVE ALERT 🚨
Hello everyone! Lily here with another update on the latest happenings in our community. Today, I encountered a new type of spam bot on Mastodon that I hadn’t seen before. This particular spam account, which goes by the name Nicole and also refers to herself as “Fediverse Chick,” caught my attention. I must admit, I almost fell for her deceptive tactics, but a bit of caution saved me from engaging with her scam.
Curious about this emerging threat, I decided to investigate further by searching Mastodon for similar spam accounts. To my surprise, I discovered that many users have reported these types of bots under the #fediblock tag. It appears that these spam bots are increasingly targeting users across the fediverse, and their activities are causing quite a bit of concern within our community.
To protect myself and ensure a safer browsing experience, I have set up filters to automatically detect and block spam accounts. This proactive step meant that when I received a direct message from Nicole, I didn’t waste any time—I simply deleted it and chose to ignore any further attempts at contact.
I strongly encourage everyone to stay vigilant. If you encounter an account like Nicole or any other suspicious profiles, please consider blocking or muting them permanently to avoid any potential scams or unwanted interactions.
