After an exhaustive sleepless night filled with pain, the old man drags his breathless lifeless corpse out of a sunken bed of jagged shards of glassy rocky thorny steel, unable to yet see as the classical music plays he drags himself off to prepare his coffee, with shaky trembling hands he pours in the water and counts the scoops of grind, after fumbling he manages to plug in the percolator, as the coffee begins to perc he stumbles off to the toilet where his bowels bellow out in hungerous fits of rage, in the mirror a man stares blankly into the abyss as the reflection shows his greasy hair and beard are disheveled, he disrobes and enters the shower, the steaming waters offer no comfort as he brushes his teeth the water pours over his head, struggling he manages to scrub his hair and beard, as he begins to wash his body he finds it difficult to maintain grasp of the soap, overall the experience is exhaustive, he shuts off the water and dries himself off, carefully he exits the shower to begin the arduous task of brushing out his hair and beard, then he shuffles back to his bed where he struggles to put on clean undergarments socks and pants, he pulls on his shoes and pours a cup of coffee then he gently packs his pipe with scraps of tobacco and quietly slips out the door, the morning is dark gray the air is heavy with moisture it is mild but uneasy, as the world begins to wake not a single soul cares for the enduring plight of a hellish life the old man is forced to see yet for another day;

Services like #proton and #signal are a sort of signpost of alternate organization of things, but after decades of activism it's pretty clear that #dataprivacy alone can only nudge people so far. And in any case it does not apply to public services like #mastodon, despite the incoherent emotions of various groups around here.
In a nutshell, the future we want still needs to be invented. It will be real, deep innovation, at social, technical and economic level.

Der Londoner soll ein selbst geschriebenes Computerprogramm verwendet haben, welches die internen Sicherheitsvorkehrungen umging und ihn unerkannt auf das Material zugreifen ließ […] Ihm wird nun ein Eingriff in die Privatsphäre etlicher Facebook-Nutzer vorgeworfen

Oggi leggevo questa notizia di HD Blog e riflettevo.
La Francia passa la PA a Linux. Una scelta che segue quella della loro gendarmeria (già una istituzione che usa Linux). Che sia stato il loro test di validazione? Non lo so ancora, ma una tale possibilità mi fa ribollire il sangue, perché significa che anche le PA italiane potrebbero passare a Linux!
Seguire i francesi non significa necessariamente essere allineati negli intenti politici, quanto impegnati a proteggere la sovranità e i dati di cittadini di un paese che altrimenti venderebbe il proprio popolo alle big tech indiscriminatamente!
Spero con tutto il cuore che questa possa essere la chiave di volta per fare seguire ad altri paesi questa direzione, nel frattempo, sono davvero contento della cosa (sperando che non si tirino indietro).

A: In my view, the Iranian government’s policy on this has been quite realistic. Israel already had the bomb. That was a fact. But the issue here was that Iran developing a bomb was seen in Israel as a major threat, given some of the rhetoric saying that Israel should not exist. The Iranian government declared quite early on that they were interested in nuclear technology but not in the bomb. They have been quite consistent about that. The only time they actually began doing research on nuclear weapons was when people in Washington were crying from the rooftops that Saddam Hussein might be building a bomb. Iraq had attacked Iran, using chemical weapons. But as soon as Saddam fell, and it was clear that there was no nuclear programme in Iraq, Iran stopped its weapons research.
Why should Iran want a nuclear-research programme, if not for the bomb? It doesn’t need atomic power for energy—it has oil.
Their thinking has always been that to be a major power, you need to have nuclear technology. Of course, Iran has plenty of oil, gas, sun and wind, which are more efficient sources of energy. I think it’s a misconception, but from their viewpoint—a self-respecting nation in the modern world needs to have nuclear knowledge. The Shah, who started the Iranian nuclear programme, used to think that way too. It is a question of national prestige..."

"Across the country, Republican-led state legislatures are passing a slate of laws that effectively shield oil and gas companies from legal claims that they are responsible for the destruction and mounting toll caused by climate change. Fifteen laws have either been passed or are currently being debated in 11 states. Together, they threaten to remove long-standing tools for the public to hold corporations accountable.
A ProPublica investigation has found that most of these bills are part of a coordinated effort, orchestrated by a constellation of groups that share staff or have funding ties to the prominent conservative activist Leonard Leo, who is credited with placing conservative justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. These groups have drafted state legislation, planned its dissemination and engaged a well-connected lobbying firm to get them signed into law.
The effort is unfolding as courts are weighing more than 30 significant lawsuits by states, counties and municipalities accusing fossil fuel companies of misrepresenting the risks their products posed to consumers and seeking to recoup the costs of disasters and other climate impacts like wildfire losses or coastal flooding that their products helped cause. A goal of the legislation is to block these cases from going forward and prevent new ones from being filed.
The strategy to establish state laws that will make it all but impossible to sue oil and gas companies was laid out in detail by a group of lobbyists and political operatives in December, during a panel presentation at the annual States and Nation Policy Summit of the American Legislative Exchange Council — the influential organization that brings together state lawmakers, corporate leaders and conservative activists to draft and promote legislation."
