This is my first official week of unemployment; I had two months' warning that it was coming and so far only managed two callbacks out of 100+ applications sent out. Fortunately the place I'm interviewing at now seems pretty interested! Unfortunately, they're taking quite a while to make a final decision which is just great for the ol' anxiety machine.
So to cope, I've been spending way too much time doing #GameDev! Tonight I couldn't sleep because I sent off an email asking for an update yesterday and never heard back so now I'm worried I killed my chances. In this spirit, units in #RulerOfRoguemount can now die, and leave gravestones behind when they do!

So I recently wanted to set up a private chat service, mainly because I wanted a place to get notifications from things like alertmanager, homeassistant, et al. And at first I was looking at Zulip, which looked great, but then I realised that many communities I'm part of use matrix, and so now I have my own matrix server.
Some observations:
- Setting up synapse was easier than I expected.
- The initial client UX, especially when it comes to encryption keys is painful at first, this is something I doubt normal users will ever tolerate.
- Joining channels on other servers can be insanely slow when you haven't joined anything on that server before.
- Once it works, it's a cool and ambitious way of chatting, maybe overambitious.
- The extensibility is pretty cool, reminds me of things like bitlbee.
- It's nice to be able to join community channels of Fedora and c-base without having to have an account on their servers.
All in all, now that the initial pain is over, I enjoy it, but I never see it going mainstream with the current UX. If you want to chat, hit me up, I'm @ainmosni:ainmosni.eu

I fancied self-hosting some sort of #fediverse platform but most of them looked very complex to install and maintain. GTS is simple and compact as it was never intended to support 100s or 1000s of users.
The documentation is *excellent* (especially for a FOSS project) too.

I'm wondering if this has been abused so much they had to find a way of limiting its effectiveness. A reasonable guess would be that those non job and event updates are now simply passed through to a crawl queue and the crawl happens later - making it less effective for general updates. The test would be to see if it still works with job or event URLs.

I read the post by @dansup@mastodon.social on https://mastodon.social/@dansup/114976028199958266 encouraging people to support @thisismissem@hachyderm.io and I felt inspired. I was especially inspired by the text in the "Supporter" category saying "Every little bit counts!".
Because it is true - even small contributions matter, and even though I know that Emilia cannot buy a lot of food for €5/month, it would matter as long as enough people supported her with a small amount.
To me "contribution" has always been a motivation for me. I contributed on StackOverflow (when that was a thing), I was a Microsoft MVP for a handful of years, I have contributed to various OSS projects and tried to help with translation of e.g., Friendica into Danish. But the truth is that if you want things to scale - submitting PRs, translating software or writing blog posts is not enough. We need to support people such that they can dedicate real time and effort in building great software. We need to put bread on their tables.
For the last couple of years I have started to spread a little bit of money around to various project. I support Wikipedia, Signal, pixelfed, NOYB and a few others. I took a look at my annual contributions and realised that it corresponded to roughly 0.7% of my disposable income (or my income times 0.007). To me, it is below the threshold of what I would even realise that I spent. It is roughly the amount I would pay if I went out with a friend, had a burger and a couple of beers. Given the value I get from using all of the great projects in the #fediverse and other open tooling, I think it is a reasonable amount to pay back - #YMMV, ofc.
0.007 has a nice ring to it - so by this I am starting what I have decided to call "the zero-zero-seven initiative". The purpose is to create awareness about financial contribution to the projects we use every day. The goal is to have more people contribute small amounts to projects - at a level that does not ruin people's economy. It is effectively applying "the Salami slicing tactics" to financial contributions. If enough people contribute small amounts - it will have a colossal impact.
Please help by spreading the word on this - and take a look at your own finances. Would you be able to spread 0.007 times your income to those great people that build the software we use every day? Or maybe just a bit less? Remember - free software" is not free to create. It takes time, dedication and effort, and we really need to support those liberating us from #bigtech

You cannot make two views in different hierarchies the same size. Containment-based layout is good enough.
The #SwiftUI View Body instrument only shows body executions despite a lot of work happening in other parts of the code. Leaf views like Text and container views like V/HStack also don’t have body getters so they also don’t show up. Having view bodies from your own named views show up + *some* SwiftUI views is good enough. (Note: the SwiftUI instrument in Instruments 26 was *significantly* improved. I believe it fixes some of these issues no have not formed an opinion on it, yet)
A SwiftUI Form view in the grouped style is embedded into its own scroll view. In the grouped style it’s not in a scroll view. There is no way to get rid of the scroll view around a grouped form to eg embed it in your own scroll view with additional UI. Having Form only work well if it’s filling the whole content of the current container is good enough.
Being able to completely disable interactive dismiss of sheets is good enough. There is no need to have a delegate callback (like in UIKit) that would allow putting up a confirmation dialog if data would be lost by „swipe to dismiss“. You can either turn it in or off, that’s it.
Applying a background modifier to a Grid does not actually set the background of the grid but only of all the individual grid elements. That’s good enough.
Our design Toolkits for Figma and Sketch still contain the default cell styles from UIKit (single label, title + subtitle label, label + value) but there isn’t actually any way to easily create these in SwiftUI. It’s good enough to have devs work with designers to figure out what the precise measurements, fonts etc. in Figma are to try to replicate what‘s sold to designers as a default component in SwiftUI.
Who needs a target-action-first-responder pattern in menus? Action closures should be good enough for everyone. It you really want to, you can just call NSApplication to invoke that responder chain manually from the closure.

12 декабря 1993 на всенародном голосовании была принята Конституция России. Одно слово в том, оригинальном тексте Конституции сыграло особую роль в дальнейшей судьбе страны. Это слово было «подряд», в пункте 3 статьи 81 о том, может ли один и тоже человек занимать должность президента Российской Федерации не более двух сроков. Много копий сломано в дискуссиях об этом слове, Конституционный суд разъяснял смысл этого пункта в своем решении. Немногие принимали это во внимание, когда голосовали за или против принятия Конституции. 20 января 2020 президент России Владимир Путин внес в Государственную Думу проект закона с новыми поправками в Конституцию. Большой объем поправок, предложенных в этом проекте закона, не дает возможности обычному человеку разобраться в них. Возникает риск того, что мы повторим историю с словом «подряд», и мы снова будем принимать решение и голосовать за или против принятия Конституции без полной информации о последствиях этих поправок. В этой статье я рассмотрю, как инструменты, созданные для разработки программного обеспечения, помогают в анализе предложенных изменений.
