TIL that software (especially #scripting runtimes like #Python, #Perl, and #NodeJS) running in #Alpine #Linux containers is often slower than in other distros like #Ubuntu. This is despite the former being faster on startup and often vastly more efficient with CPU, memory, and storage.
It mostly comes down to Alpine’s use of musl libc rather than #GNU’s glibc. musl is optimized for minimalism, not raw performance. Also, the Alpine packages are often not compiled with as many optimizations.

“Vraag Meta AI alles” is de weinig geruststellende openingszin van de chatbot van WhatsApps moederbedrijf. Vooral als je even verder leest waar staat dat “Sommige berichten kunnen onjuist of ongepast zijn”.

Chatten doen de meeste Nederlanders en honderden miljoenen anderen al hoofdzakelijk binnen WhatsApp. Dat doen ze met vrienden, collega’s, vijanden, groepen en bedrijven. Zo lijkt gaan chatten met een chatbot om wat voor reden dan ook een heel kleine stap.
Zoekmachine-oorlog
De grootste stap is eigenlijk dat de zoekbalk bovenin de applicatie nu veel prominenter is. De tekst is ook veel dwingender, namelijk
“Vraag het Meta AI of voer een zoekopdracht…”
Bij mijn telefoon is het vervolg niet te lezen, al zal dat bij bredere/grotere schermen wellicht anders zijn. De boodschap is simpel: Zoek Met Meta AI. Gebruik Me Als Zoekmachine. Ik Ben Je Nieuwe Google! En je nieuwe ChatGPT!
En daar gaat het natuurlijk om. Steeds meer mensen gebruiken de ChatGPT-app als soort van veredelde zoekmachine, hoe stom onverstandig dat ook is. Iedereen zou heel goed moeten weten dat Ai’s het vaak best aardig doen, maar ook best vaak niet. Een antwoord lijkt bijna altijd waar omdat het zo keurig en netjes geformuleerd is. Juist daarom is het zo link: het is niet zo erg als een triviaal dingetje net niet klopt, maar als iets heel belangrijks net niet klopt kan dat ernstige gevolgen hebben. *
De ChatGPT-app staat al bij veel mensen op hun telefoon en ze gebruiken het voor van alles, het voorlezen van teksten, het maken van handige lijstjes, het uitvoeren van acties. Je kunt het zo gek niet bedenken. En zoeken dus.
Omdat de zoekmarkt nu ineens voor het eerst in lange tijd opengebroken lijkt, is het voor elk bedrijf met een min of meer functionerend taalmodel, want dat zijn de kunstmatige intelligenties waar we het over hebben, tijd om zieltjes te winnen. Hop! Kom bij mij! Ik geef je alles!
Privacy? Ja? Nee?
Nu is het wonderlijke dat Meta zegt dat de communicatie met de chatbot niet gebruikt wordt om het taalmodel bij Meta te verbeteren, terwijl als je op het linkje ‘AI bij Meta’ klikt in het beginscherm, daar her en der wel staat dat je interactie gebruikt kan worden voor verbetering. Misschien dat mijn in het verleden ingevoerde bezwaar toch ergens aan gelinkt is?
Privacy of niet, ik ga er niet vanuit dat je die hebt bij bedrijven als Google, OpenAI, Meta, X of Amazon, om de bekendste vijf eens te noemen.
Zou dit nou de druppel zijn voor velen in ons land en daarbuiten om eens te stoppen met WhatsApp? Ik ben bang van niet…
* Er bestaat een aardige manier die problemen te omzeilen door altijd te vragen waar de informatie vandaan komt en sommige bots doen dat al automatisch, het blijft om twee redenen onverstandig: mensen vergeten te letten op dat soort aanwijzingen en, minstens zo belangrijk: een zoekopdracht is vele malen energie-intensiever dan die via een gewone zoekmachine (al is dat misschien wel achterhaald omdat de meest gebruikte zoekmachine Google nu overal slechte Ai-samenvattingen bij maakt).

So after #feedly logged me out for the gazillionth time today, I remembered what an odd situation it is that I have to log into an rss reader in the first place. So I deleted #feedly and decided to give #feeder a try (the #foss one... seems there's another app of the same name).
what a nice, refreshing experience:

@liahaberman i can respect the work you've done on this. that said, i have to laugh too. you're asking a team to improve #privacy for a product that has consistantly violated privacy several times on severAl months. if you are using #facebook / #meta you should know this is going to happen. you should *expect* this. as one of my friends @kkarhan says, #kyc is the elicit activity, and facebook asks for a lot of kyc.
also, this is evident by the amount of #gdpr violations in the #eu meta has received. don't get me wrong, i'm absolutely not discrediting you, i'm glad you got this out. i'm just saying you're shouting at a wall. meta has consistantly violating privacy and #cybersecurity in some cases, and will continue to do so.
so as much as i agree, meta is simply going to laugh in your face rather than do you any good

Funny that in this context of AI, the structured architecture of #Drupal is a huge advantage, while at the same time the folks working on layout initiatives seem to be trying to sever the content from any sort of structured architecture.

OCR for MLK and JFK files
It would be very helpful if the Presidential Assassination files were searchable. Researchers could look up keywords and phrases and look for patterns without having to read the entire collection. Since the files are in pdf format, an OCR (optical character recognition) program could process the files and make them searchable. Instead of just the file name, important concepts like “PPC” (Poor People’s Campaign) could be searched for throughout the collection.
Has anyone heard that this has already been do or is interested in making this happen?

Der virtuelle Sprachassistent Alexa wurde 2014 eingeführt.
Es dauerte anscheinend 2 Jahre, bis Eltern während der wieder aufkommenden Popularität des Namens realisierten, dass es eine blöde Idee ist, ihre Kinder weiterhin so zu nennen.
Die Softwarebasis stammt übrigens aus #Polen und nicht aus den #USA.

OpenAI w czwartek, 7 sierpnia, oficjalnie udostępniła swój długo wyczekiwany model GPT-5, który od teraz zasila chatbota ChatGPT. Jednak tym razem premierze towarzyszy nie tylko entuzjazm, ale i nuta powagi.
Sam Altman, dyrektor generalny OpenAI, w rozmowie z dziennikarzami przyznał, że prace nad nowym modelem przywodziły mu na myśl Projekt Manhattan, czyli amerykański program budowy bomby atomowej. Stwierdził, że w historii nauki zdarzają się momenty, gdy twórcy patrzą na swoje dzieło i pytają: „Co myśmy zrobili?”.
Nowy model, który według Altmana jest „znaczącym krokiem na ścieżce do ogólnej sztucznej inteligencji (AGI)”, ma być nie tylko znacznie potężniejszy, ale i dostępny za darmo dla wszystkich użytkowników. OpenAI potwierdziło, że użytkownicy nie będą już musieli ręcznie przełączać się między różnymi wersjami – GPT-5 będzie to robił automatycznie, dobierając odpowiednią moc (w wersjach standard, mini lub nano) w zależności od złożoności zadania. Płatni użytkownicy otrzymają dostęp do wyższych limitów użycia.

Sam Altman podkreślił, że osobiście naciskał na zespół, aby nowa wersja była radykalnie szybsza. Skala postępu jest na tyle duża, że według niego „powrót do GPT-4 po używaniu GPT-5 jest żałosny”. Już w lipcu w jednym z podcastów przyznał, że zadał GPT-5 pytanie, którego sam do końca nie rozumiał, a model „odpowiedział na nie perfekcyjnie”, co sprawiło, że poczuł się „bezużyteczny w porównaniu z AI”.
Wśród nowości, poza tym, że model jest multimodalny, firma wymienia również ulepszone zdolności w zakresie „vibe coding” – najnowszej mody w Dolinie Krzemowej (programista mówi maszynie co ta ma zakodować, nie tworzy sam kodu linijka po linijce). Premiera zbiega się w czasie z imponującym wzrostem popularności samego chatbota. Jeszcze w kwietniu OpenAI informowało o 500 milionach aktywnych użytkowników tygodniowo; obecnie firma spodziewa się osiągnąć próg 700 milionów w tym tygodniu.

Now with zero textures. It looks pretty similar to https://github.com/voithos/godot-precomputed-atmosphere which is based on Hillaire's "production-ready sky", but is maybe 10% of the code and takes maybe 10% of the GPU power. Not bad for a day's work!
