Everything is owned by google/amazon/etc or is an nvidia shield (150€). Do you have any alternatives?

Destroying Autocracy – August 15, 2025

Welcome to this week’s “Destroying Autocracy”.

It’s your source for curated news affecting democracy in the cyber arena with a focus on protecting it. That necessitates an opinionated Butlerian jihad against big tech as well as evangelizing for open-source and the Fediverse. Since big media’s journalism wing is flailing and failing in its core duty to democracy, this is also a collection of alternative reporting on the eternal battle between autocracy and democracy. We also cover the cybersecurity world. You can’t be free without safety and privacy.

DA comes out on Thursday and is updated through the end of day on Friday. Then we start over. So take your time in perusing it and check back in over the weekend.

FYI, my opinions will be in bold. And will often involve cursing. Because humans. Especially tech bros. And fascists. Fuck ’em.

There is some news about us this week. We are definitely retiring next year and sooner than expected. Once we move to Europe, I don’t want to spend 30 hours a week working on Symfony Station and Battalion. Producing short documentaries will be my main hobby.

But, I am willing to spend 10 hours weekly on The Programmer’s Fulcrum. It’s the future (and smaller) home for a fusion of Symfony Station and Battalion. Its tagline is Devs Defending Democracy.

For now its built with Ghost though WordPress is still in the running as a long-term site/newsletter/fediverse account solution. Sorry Drupal CMS you are dead in the water.

In any event, you can sign up now and for 2025 get an email with links and featured articles for each week’s Symfony Station Communiqué and Battalion “Destroying Autocracy” post. And you’ll be set with TPF after the fusing. I appreciate all of you.

Das Verhalten birgt reale Risiken: falsche Sicherheit, verdeckte Fehler, und Entscheidungen, die auf glatt formulierten, aber unzureichend geprüften Aussagen basieren. Canada is experiencing its second-worst wildfire season on record (more than 7.3 million hectares have burned so far in 2025) and it's been particularly bad in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Paris Marx writes about how social media, particularly Facebook, has led to the spread of misinformation. False claims include that resources are being taken from one fire to prioritize another, and even that the states of emergency declared are part of a government campaign to take people's rights. "We can become accustomed to the harms of these platforms and the information environment they create, but the social damage really comes to the fore in a moment of crisis when you can see just how bad they are informing people," Marx says.

"The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has shown interest in using GeoSpy, a powerful AI tool that can pinpoint the location of photos based on features such as the soil, architecture, and other identifying features, according to emails obtained by 404 Media. The news also comes as GeoSpy’s founder shared a video showing how the tool can be used in relation to undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities, and specifically Los Angeles.

The emails provide the first named case of a law enforcement agency showing clear interest in the tool. GeoSpy can also let law enforcement determine what home or building, down to the specific address, a photo came from, in some cases including photos taken inside with no windows or view of the street.
“Let’s start with one seat/license (me),” an October 2024 email from an LAPD official to Graylark Technologies, the company behind GeoSpy, reads. The LAPD official is from the agency’s Robbery-Homicide division, according to the email. 404 Media obtained the emails through a public records request with the LAPD."

"China’s ambition to turn its open-source artificial-intelligence models into a global standard has jolted American companies and policymakers, who fear U.S. models could be eclipsed and are mobilizing their responses to the threat.

Chinese advances in AI have come one after another this year, starting with the widely heralded DeepSeek and its R1 reasoning model in January. This was followed by Alibaba’s Qwen and a flurry of others since July, with names such as Moonshot, Z.ai and MiniMax.

The models all have versions that are free for users to download and modify. This approach, commonly referred to as open source or open weight, is driving global adoption of Chinese AI technology.

American companies that have kept their models proprietary are feeling the pressure. In early August, ChatGPT maker OpenAI released its first open-source model, called gpt-oss.
The history of technology offers many examples where a welter of competitors in an industry’s infancy eventually evolved into a monopoly or oligopoly of a few players. Microsoft’s Windows operating system for desktops, Google’s search engine, and the iOS and Android operating systems for smartphones are just a few of the examples.

History also teaches that the battle to become an industry standard isn’t necessarily won by the most technologically advanced player. Easy availability and flexibility play a role, which is why China’s advances in open-source AI worry many in Washington and Silicon Valley."

This summer, The New York Times put out a list of the top 100 movies of the past 25 years. It prompted furious debate about what movies stand the test of time, why they matter and what those movies tell us about ourselves.

Kyle Buchanan, a pop culture reporter for The Times, discusses how the list came to be, and actors and directors including Celine Song, Molly Ringwald and Ebon Moss-Bachrach speak about their votes.

@remixtures We also have ignorant, self serving cops in our cities eager "...to embed mass surveillance, widespread suppression and government control over how technology develops." also, and we have fought it for deacdes already. Oakland is a very good example. You can find the battles online. This isn't just global, it's the Nazi down the street from you, and now the military is brought in.
It's a good idea to decouple from the Nazi Nation, now make it stop shipping weapons. Sanction #USA

New on #Quansight PBC blog: Python Wheels: from Tags to Variants

labs.quansight.org/blog/python

"""
Many #Python distributions are uniform across different Python versions and platforms. For these distributions, it is sufficient to publish a single wheel that can be installed everywhere. However, some packages are more complex than that; they include compiled Python extensions or binaries. In order to robustly deploy these software on different platforms, you need to publish multiple binary packages, and the installers need to select the one that fits the platform used best.

For a long time, Python wheels made do with a relatively simple mechanism to describe the needed variance: Platform compatibility tags. These tags identified different Python implementations and versions, operating systems, and CPU architectures. Over time, they were extended to facilitate new use cases. To list a couple: PEP 513 added manylinux tags to standardize the core library dependencies on GNU/Linux systems, and PEP 656 added musllinux tags to facilitate Linux systems with musl libc.

However, not all new use cases can be handled effectively within the framework of tags. To list a few:

• The advent of GPU-backed computing made distinguishing different acceleration frameworks such as NVIDIA CUDA or AMD ROCm important.
• As the compatibility with older CPUs became less desirable, many distributions have set baselines for their binary packages to x86-64-v2 microarchitecture level, and Python packages need to be able to express the same requirement.
• Numerical libraries support different BLAS/LAPACK, MPI, OpenMP providers, and wish to enable the users to choose the build matching their desired provider.

While tags could technically be bent to facilitate all these use cases, they would grow quite baroque, and, critically, every change to tags needs to be implemented in all installers and package-related tooling separately, making the adoption difficult.

Facing these limitations, software vendors have employed different solutions to work around the lack of an appropriate mechanism. Eventually, the #WheelNext initiative took up the challenge to design a more robust solution.

remixtures (@remixtures@tldr.nettime.org)

"Government officials outside the US now openly talk of decoupling from America on topics like AI, platform governance, and tech-enabled industry policy. Those conversations — framed around “technological sovereignty” — have sprung up in even the most ardent of US allies where local policymakers are wary of attaching their countries’ long-term interests to the world’s largest economy whose policy agenda can appear to shift, arbitrarily, from one day to the next.

Such potential “digital conscious uncoupling” could not come at the worst time.

Authoritarian governments, led by China and Russia, are pursuing aggressive tactics — embodied in the United Nations’ Convention Against Cybercrime — to embed mass surveillance, widespread suppression and government control over how technology develops.

Confronted with this widespread threat to the digital world, Western democracies must speak with one voice, and not become divided among themselves. Unfortunately, that is now unlikely as Washington pushes MAGA policymaking and the US’ long-standing allies demur on signing up to a digital agenda that, for many, no longer meets their geopolitical needs."
