a person's attitude towards furries is a great litmus test for their level of tolerance generally, and the presence of furries and queer people and other outcasts in a space is a major sign of a healthy social ecosystem. maybe the biggest one even. with statistics showing the vast majority of furries are queer in some capacity, it makes sense that 2000's era meme furry hate was nothing more than thinly-veiled bigotry
the fediverse is an interesting place. what happens when you accidentally sextuple-overbook the same convention center with a queer pride event and furry convention and punk show and kink festival and antifa assembly and hacker conference? you get early mastodon, essentially. the november 2022 twitter waves and meta threads' activitypub integration have diluted this vibe considerably, but the fighting spirit of the fediverse is still there. and as corpo gentrifiers (meta, etc.) continue to attempt to chip away at what makes the fediverse so wonderful, here's why it's worth saving:

ONE: because it's beautiful
the fediverse is the only major social media platform where trans people can freely express themselves and be visible without fear of experiencing unmoderated hate-speech. provided your instance has adequate moderation, of course. but this is the case more often than not. sure, the occassional new bigot pleroma instance pops up once in a while. but at least you can trust that something will actually be fucking done about it when you submit a report. nazis get banned and defederated. it's such a low godddamn bar to clear... and yet, by and large, the fediverse is the only major social media platform that actually manages to do this (the decent sections of it, at least). why? well, here's the big secret: BECAUSE WE DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT PROFIT!!! big companies allow nazis to fester on their services because it makes them money, and here we're not beholden to such a corrupting influence. that's kinda the entire point
all the good servers have all the bad ones blocked. that's the beauty of the fediverse. they're essentially isolated from the good portion of the network. in a book i got interviewed for (Move Slowly and Build Bridges: Mastodon, the Fediverse, and the Struggle for Democratic Social Media by Robert W. Gehl) this is termed the "covenantal fediverse" due to said instances broadly following the mastodon server covenant, the most important point of which is "active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia." the rest is just technical stuff. still important, but nowhere near as influental

THREE: because it's important
as fascism ever-encroaches digital spaces free from corporate tyranny will only become more important. as trans people are being actively genocided here in the U.S. and abroad, alternative social media systems are a place where we can truly express ourselves. find ourselves. become ourselves. corporations are rolling back DEI initiatives and rules against queerphobia. these corpo platforms are no place to thrive. when i joined mastodon in 2017, it was at a crucial time in my gender journey. fedi singlehandedly saved me from being some doofy techbro and turned me into the amazing cyberpunk catgirl i am today. it gave me the critical positive trans representation i so desperately needed, and gave me a likeminded community. a space to learn and grow, and try on new aspects of identity to see what fit. i credit it almost entirely with shaping me into Vanta Rainbow Black
it's a common thread on the fediverse. always has been. even today. so much so that i came up with a name for it, way back in 2017: The Fediverse Effect. people tend to join and realize they're trans due to the sheer abundance of trans people on the network. it really helps to have positive representation y'know? like actual tangible people to dispel common myths and misconceptions, who you can even talk to personally about this stuff. it was indispensible in my journey towards finding myself and molding myself into the person i was meant to be

Zwischen Blog, Facebook & Mastodon – Über Kommentare, Reichweite und Kompromisse
In den vergangenen Wochen hat es in der kleinen deutschen Blogosphäre doch die ein oder andere mehr oder weniger heftige Diskussion gegeben. An vielen dieser Diskussionen und auch an mancher Nabelschau* oder auch Blogparade beteilige ich mich bewusst nicht. My blog is my Castle, der Ort, an dem ich über Dinge schreibe, die mich wirklich beschäftigen. Das Schreiben hilft mir, meine Gedanken zu sortieren, ist also auf der einen Seite Selbstreflexion.
Kommentare erwünscht – aber bitte nicht nur in den sozialen Medien
Auf der anderen Seite will ich natürlich gelesen werden und freue mich, wenn man antwortet und kommentiert. Auch darüber ist gerade eine Diskussion in Bloghausen entbrannt. Leider kommentieren einige, vielleicht zu viele, nicht direkt im Blog, sondern tun dies in den sozialen Medien. Der Klassiker war gerade Thomas, der mir auf Facebook anbot, mit mir über seine Erfahrungen mit PV-Anlagen, flexiblen Stromtarifen, E-Autos und dem ganzen Drumherum zu reden.
Ich hätte seine Ausführungen lieber in der Kommentarspalte meines Blogs gesehen, aber ich muss akzeptieren, dass manche Leser E-Mail, Messenger oder soziale Medien bevorzugen. Um es auf den Punkt zu bringen: Manche aus meinem Freundeskreis würden meine Beiträge gar nicht lesen, wenn ich sie nicht auch auf Facebook posten würde. Das war übrigens auch der entscheidende Grund, warum ich wieder auf Facebook zurückgekehrt bin. Wer in meinem Bekanntenkreis nicht gerade ein Netzfreak ist, ist als „Normalo“ nun mal auf Facebook (und meist nirgendwo anders).
Mein Facebook-Kompromiss
Und wie Horst stinkt es auch mir, dass ich damit den Stellenwert dieses asozialen Netzwerks eines Mark Zuckerbergs zementiere, der sich in den vergangenen Monaten einem Trump dermaßen angeschleimt hat, dass mir davon nur übel wird. In der Güterabwägung ist es mir aber noch wichtiger, besagten Freundeskreis zu erreichen. Deshalb bleibe ich erst einmal dort. Und ich bespiele parallel andere soziale Kanäle, vor allem Mastodon, aber auch Bluesky und Threads, weil ich dort andere „Zielgruppen“ erreiche. Im Falle von Threads bin ich gerade in der Überlegung, ob das wirklich Sinn macht, aber da das Cross-Posting automatisiert geschieht, macht es mir auch keinen zusätzlichen Aufwand.
Wer kommentiert, soll auch persönlich Flagge zeigen
Doch zurück zur Kommentarspalte in meinem Blog. Ich nutze die Standardfunktionalität von WordPress.com und moderiere alle Kommentare, das heißt, ich gebe sie explizit frei. Von wem ich schon einmal einen Kommentar freigegeben habe, deren Kommentare werden derzeit automatisch erneut freigeschaltet.
Auch muss man sich in meinem Blog mit Name und E-Mail-Adresse anmelden. Bewusst erlaube ich kein anonymes Kommentieren. Ich weiß, hierzu gibt es andere Meinungen, und es mag andere davon abhalten, zu kommentieren. Aber ich bestehe in meinem Blog darauf, dass man angibt, wer man ist, also offen Flagge zeigt. Wer wirklich anonym etwas Sensibles schreiben will, kann mich jederzeit anmailen. Und wer hassen und hetzen will, dessen Kommentar wird nicht freigegeben und der landet auf der SPAM-Liste.
Nischendasein – na und?
Ja, ich würde mir wünschen, dass Blogs wieder mehr gelesen werden. Aber nachdem Google seit geraumer Zeit Blogs nicht mehr in dem Maße wie früher bewertet, sind zumindest bei mir die Zugriffszahlen deutlich zurückgegangen. Sicher hat das auch noch andere Gründe. Mein Themenspektrum ist breiter geworden, ich poste keine englischsprachigen Beiträge mehr, der alte Blogtitel DigitalNaiv.com war griffiger, es gibt kein Twitter mehr und einige andere Dinge mögen solche Gründe sein.
Ich bin mir sehr bewusst, dass ich mit meinem Blog nur eine winzige Nische, vor allem mich und einige Freunde sowie treue Leserinnen und Leser bediene. Damit kann und will ich aber leben, auch wenn ich fragwürdige Kompromisse wie das erwähnte Cross-Posting nach Facebook eingehe …
* Der Begriff Nabelschau ist in keiner Weise despektierlich gemeint. Nur gehen manche Themen einfach nicht an mich und dann lasse ich das Schreiben auch sein.

Im Schlosspark von Ludwigsburg geht man im Blumengarten durch eine geheimnisvolle Tür in einen Tunnel zu einem anderen Teil des Gartens und auf einmal gibt es Flamingos und andere wundersame Vögel im Freigang. Hier sieht man einen Fasan, der unseren Weg gekreuzt hat.

I just wanted to register my child at the music school. But then the registration form wasn't working. Fine, I thought, let's send them a message. The contact form wasn't working either. So I opened the browser console: strange requests to dingdonger.org and blessedwirror.org that weren't working. It turned out that the #WordPress instance of the website had apparently been #infected with #malware...
