I’ve always had an issue with the “Terms of Service” agreements for online platforms, or any software for that matter.
It’s not a secret that nobody reads them. They are usually many pages long, or often thousands of words on a single document, and packed full of legalese that many people simply don’t understand.
In the case of Facebook, there are 3 main documents that you must agree to: Terms of Service (TOS), Privacy Policy, and Cookies Policy.
When clicking to read them on the web, you are presented with pages with more links to click, that spawn pop-ups with more text containing links to a myriad of other policies, such as interacting with their artificial intelligence systems.
It’s a mess.
I don’t believe that any intellectually honest person would ever claim that even 0.00001% of Facebook users have ever read all the applicable policies. That feat has only ever been accomplished by the absolute legends who work in privacy and consumer advocacy.
I’m also not a fan of how easy it is to set up an account without knowing what you signed up for.
So, I decided to fix it.
The idea is simple – mandate that people wait the appropriate amount of time to click the “sign up” button, as it would take to read through ALL of the policies for their language and legal jurisdiction.
While I used Facebook as the example in the image I created below, this could equally apply to any platform or service with a TOS or EULA (end user license agreement).
Yes, it’s corny and cheeky, but it’s something to think about.
This simple addition of requiring people to wait (not even to demonstrably read the TOS) could dissuade all but the most determined trolls from signing up for throwaway accounts. As I’ve written about before, participation in social media should require some actual effort, and trolls hate effort.
It would also be a major disincentive for those who get bored easily, and for children, because who has the patience to wait 2 hours for the button to become available?
It will make you think: do I really, really, want this?
Finally, for obvious reasons, it would incentivize platforms to make their terms of service as concise, plain language and easy to understand as possible. And that would make them more easily accountable.
No place to hide sneaky legalese.

Now you've elaborated, I do seem to remember quite a few people posting about #peertube - and #lemmy to a lesser extent.
I think there may be special issues with the way they use #ActivityPub but I hasten to add, I don't know the ins an outs of it well enough to say for sure.
It's interesting that #friendica works more or less perfectly though, despite being at least as complex as the others you mention.
I wonder if it's because it's far older, so everyone already knows how to allow for its quirks.
It's an interesting topic though - and obviously one I follow :)

@lianna I've been thinking about doing bushcrafting videos on #peertube - there's a big bushcrafting community on Youtube (Simon Bloke in the Woods, Kent Survival, TA Outdoors - just to name just a couple of the better known UK tubers), but essentially none on Fediverse, or at least I've not come across it. I think the issue is at least partly about exposure - in the absence of algoritms, you have to be actively looking for the content, and let's face it, Peertube's discoverability is nowhere near that of Youtube... and when your expected audience is maybe a couple of people across the world and their dog, it dampens the enthusiasm a bit, because shooting quality content and editing it is a lot of work, even if you only do it for fun.

the best way I saw #ActivityPub explained was as being like email protocols.
On the most basic level, text works, but the more complexity you add the more inconsistency you see.
For example, if you attach large files, some email providers will not deliver it. If you use some css some email services won't format it the same way.
And recently - well about a year ago - some yahoo accounts weren't able to receive some exchange emails.
We're all so used to this we don't even think about, but from what I've read it;'s the same issue at work with the #fediverse.
Because servers get so much freedom in how to operate, it breaks things for some users.
The social media we're used to is more homogeneous, but it wasn't always that way.
We used to have these issues with #nntp servers, where for example some servers refused to encapsulate #yenc messages correctly
It's not that #mastodon is the new way; it's just that we've forgotten the old way :)

I am asking this because I caught myself thinking about making a Mastodon account for my PeerTube space, in the same way you used to make a Twitter presence for your YouTube channel.
I realised that I should be able to just use my PeerTube account instead, since it's ActivityPub. That's the whole appeal of the Fediverse!
But since I can't write text posts, read timelines or interact in any way with non-video content on PeerTube, where is the point in federating with the rest of ActivityPub?
Is it only for commenters to be able to use their existing Fedi accounts to comment on PeerTube, and it's more of a one-way thing in reality?

Dumb question that I was always too afraid to ask:
I know how the #Fediverse and its federation works. It's intuitive and familiar to me; I mean, I even host my own instance.
But I never understood how interaction cross-software is supposed to work. In theory, I can use whatever #ActivityPub software I want and still interact with everyone else. But in practice that just... isn't the case, right?
I mean, for text it's quite simple: I write a short post on #Mastodon and people on #GoToSocial or #Misskey or whatever can see and read that same post and interact with it. They can see my profile and it appears on their instance in their style and with their features.
Even outside of microblogging I still get it. A super-long post on #Friendica or #Diaspora appears on my timeline, too. Their profiles might have more fields than I can see here, but that's fine.
But what's up beyond that?
I can see #Pixelfed posts here, converted into image galleries. But what about the other way 'round? If someone on Pixelfed follows my Mastodon account, they can't see any of my non-image posts, right?
What about #PeerTube and such niche software? I guess I could follow a PeerTube account as a microblogger and see their videos and descriptions in my timeline. Video comments are replies.
But the other way 'round? How are they supposed to interact with Friendica or Pixelfed users? PeerTube doesn't even have a "timeline".
Doesn't that feature disparity undermine the whole idea of the #Fediverse or am I missing something?
