Finally started setting up the current railway layout in JMRI. It has some good points, like automatically registering points when they are set, and all the Digitrax block detection sensors when the track is turned on. Had to register the reverse polarity blocks manually.

However even on a Raspberry Pi 5 the UI is terribly unresponsive - laggy, to the point of almost being unusable. Which makes actually creating and labelling the layout a very painful and error-prone process. I can reduce the problem by reducing the size of the panel editor window but it’s not great.

I can see the GPU getting hammered. Wondering how much is having a large display (27” 4k) and how much is the probably quite old Java GUI code. Oh, and I can’t seem to choose a resolution for the Pi to use, it just defaults to the panel’s native resolution.

VSCodium to Middle School Coding: A Free, Open-Source Alternative for Teaching Python and More

I regularly teach middle school age children coding skills with Python using the ‘turtle’ module. It’s a great way to introduce students to computer programming in a very enjoyable manner. The children love the turtle graphics that they can create and it also introduces them to mathematics topics like variability, recursion and logic. When I first started these classes I used Idle which is included with Python. I learned about Code with Mu at PyCon in 2018. It’s a great editor with a wonderful linter that helps young students to see where they have made mistakes in their code. Eager to learn more to help my students I took a course where the instructor used Visual Studio Code. I started to experiment with VSCode myself and decided that I wanted to challege my students to learn more.

I frequently had students who wanted to learn how to create web pages and I thought that these students should learn Markdown and HTML. Using VSCode would be an easy way to introduce my students Python, Markdown and HTML while using the same editor. Then a fellow open source fan said, “Why not use VSCodium?” VSCodiuim according to their website, “a community-driven, freely-licensed binary distribution of Microsoft’s editor VS Code.” It is released with an MIT license minus the licensing limitations and telemetry of Visual Studio Code.

It’s cross platform and easy to install whether you are using Linux, macOS or Windows. VSCodium offers extensive customization options, including extensions, themes and keybindings. This allows teachers and students to tailor the editor to their specific needs. The cross platform compatibility works well in environments where teachers and students have different operating systems. The cross platform support ensures consistency for the programming and learning environment.

VSCodium does not require any Microsoft products or licenses which means that it’s entirely free and open source which is a concern for teachers, parents and students. I work with many students and parents who are economically challenged and being able to offer them a world class editor and development environment is priceless. It really levels the playing field.

Just updated Tvmarks to 3.0 as I finally transition it to typescript.

I avoided typescript before as Postmarks was not and Glitch really struggled with the build step needed for typescript.

Typescript will only make adding new features easier as adding bugs will be harder.

I continue to love Tvmarks and I use it every day!

Ищем порт на коммутаторах D-Link

Предисловие. Есть у нас сеть. Не вдаваясь в подробности, состоит она из нескольких десятков коммутаторов D-Link и Cisco. Последние выполняют роль агрегаторов трафика, а D-Link занимаются доступом. Соответственно много VLAN, много устройств. И очень часто, пользователи меняют свое расположение, а вместе с ними переезжают их компьютеры и МФУ. Всё это дело хоть и подключается к нумерованным розеткам, часто поиск порта на коммутаторе для замены VLAN довольно долог и не удобен. Кроме того, техники, которые занимаются непосредственно подключением оборудования, не имеют доступа на коммутаторы. Им приходится глазами искать кабель в стойке, а потом просить инженеров проверить VLAN. Хотелось как-то упростить процесс. Я уже давно неспешно изучаю Python в качестве дополнительного образования. В основном для применения в автоматизации на работе и дома. Ну тут вот и сошлось: Python, проблема и статья на Хабре Python3. Автоматизация конфигурации мультивендорного сетевого оборудования / Хабр . Прямо брать код из ее не стал, такой функциональности не требуется. Да и хотелось самому разобраться, опираясь на идею. Написание кода началось с запроса к GigaChat, заодно было интересно проверить насколько он хорошо пишет скрипты. Не буду утомлять приводя весь цикл нашего общения, остановлюсь кратко: сперва GigaChat выдал скрипт на основе библиотеки paramiko, после уточнения, что нужно для Telnet выдал и эту версию. После нескольких итераций, в том числе с асинхронными функциями, остановился на библиотеке telnetlib. В Python 3.12 есть ее замена telnetlib3, т.к. сама telnetlib вырезана в релизе - устарела. ИИ вполне можно использовать для написания небольших скриптов, как отработка идеи или небольших функций в проектах. Однако стоит проверять код, т.к. в части случаев он получается совсем не рабочий. Ну и заодно - изображение в начале текста тоже сделал GigaChat, я то рисовать не умею.

Dabei können tatsächlich auch nicht-anonymisierte Daten zum KI-Training weitergegeben werden.

Am Hamburger Hansaplatz war das System in 2023 bereits drei Monate in Betrieb. Im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojekts, das noch bis Februar 2026 läuft, wurde offenkundig, dass die Technologie zu ihrer eigenen Ausweitung drängt. Gleichzeitig ist unklar, wie sie am Ende tatsächlich eingesetzt werden soll.'
