"In 2023, the city of Evanston, Illinois raised its ambulance fee from $1500 to $2000, with a $15 mileage charge tacked on. Like many municipalities, city officials and taxpayers have gotten used to ever-increasing prices for basic services, all bucketed under the “cost of living” crisis we’re dealing with. In fact, yesterday the Michigan University consumer sentiment indicator hit the worst reading it has ever recorded, going all the way back to 1961. The endless increases in prices for all sorts of random necessities is a key reason.
But these cost hikes don’t just ‘happen,’ as if it’s some sort of natural event. Markets are a function of law. There are companies and dealers and financiers behind every industry, so we can actually try to understand why they are happening. In this case, Evanston chalked up the hike to, among other things, the increasing of “cost of equipment and vehicles used for emergency responses.” The ambulance market, once a decentralized set of family owned firms, has been rolled up into a consolidated industry run by private equity. And the price hikes followed.
This story isn’t unusual. In early 2025, BIG traced a roll-up of fire trucks and fire apparatus, leading to a crisis in that sector. It turns out that something similar seems to have happened here, with some of the same players."

I have some potatoes sprouting eyes, they seem to do that quick on me, not a big deal just knock them off, I diced up around 6 small to medium ones, tossed them in the pot to boil, later after the cool I plan on adding ~1~ 2 cups of miraclewhip, around 4TB of sweet pickle relish and about the same amount of yellow mustard, to that I am adding 1 can of spam cubed up, along with 1/2tb of Italian seasoning and a pinch or 2 of taco seasoning, then shove it in the fridge till this evening, a bit of a kitchen sink of potato salads, but it should give me dinner tonight and maybe lunch tomorrow too;

"It's been very, very busy," he says. Galvin is the counseling director at the Center on Conscience and War, which helps run the 24-hour GI Rights Hotline, set up to inform service members of their options for military discharge.
Most callers are asking how to apply to become a conscientious objector — a difficult, invasive and rarely used process. But they're also airing their concerns and frustrations, often anonymously, as the hotline allows them a space to do so without repercussions.
Military members are citing myriad reasons for wanting to leave, but the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran has been a powerful motivator. In March alone, Galvin's center took on more than 80 new clients — almost twice as many as it takes on in an average year. The busiest single day saw 12 new clients join, with one person saying four other members of their platoon were also interested.
Those numbers are a drop in the bucket when compared with the more than 1.3 million people enlisted. But for outside observers and former military officials, those calls and conversations are an indication of a troubling disquiet within the ranks."

Had to remove the latest #Instagram. I seldom use it so I jump versions (e.g. by two years). The latest was awful. Each time you ran it, it would ask you to activate Google services. Not going to happen, and totally unnecessary, considering the “app” runs perfectly without Google. Always has. In fact, still does.
This program peaked around 2018, when it removed the map, then some of the better filters, so by the turn of the decade, it was sorely lacking. I see there were no improvements since.
