Very interesting… Yet, very disturbing…
I use LibreWolf, StartPage, Searx instances, and have fingerprint resistance turned on. I also don’t use YouTube’s app and have custom browser scripts to limit algorithmic manipulation. Since their systems know I’m a real person but have little information about me, they’ve started defaulting to a Visitor Cold Start strategy.
Google has started selecting a broad set of potentially relevant videos, stories, and suggestions using location data and the minimal profile data I filled out as fallback signals. They use this as a starting point for suggestions, hoping I will like or dislike them so they can start extrapolating using A/B testing. When I look at a control profile that uses everything like an average user, I see that their algorithms aggressively try to code for gender. They push the account toward political discourse aimed at gender.
Because sites have started to use information about your browser to identify you across sites, I recommend people see how unique their browser is. Am I Unique is a good site to check out to test how easily identifiable your browser is across sites.
Absolutely fucking nuts! These companies have started to aggressively build psychological profiles and then tailor their recommendations in ways that drag people toward whatever political corner has the highest amplitude in frequency for their location.
For example, I noticed a difference in Georgia compared to California. In Georgia, male coded viewers are being pushed toward Christian targeted ads, sponsored podcasts, and manosphere content. There are many sponsored ads advertising podcasts, specifically manosphere cryptocurrency podcasts, being recommended on YouTube’s default app for male coded viewers. This varies from profiles where the location data indicates California.
I am using the word “coded” because the algorithms are attaching tags to people’s profiles that are abstracted as such. If you have a cluster of particular behaviors, machine learning algorithms tag them and then abstracts that as a cluster or clique that has a code name. It’s very disturbing how quickly algorithmic code names become assimilated into common vernacular and used routinely in discourse. People are being programmed by this shit.
My identity is liminal, so it is hard to categorize me or pin me down with an algorithm, but when systems try to define my identity, it lets me see the shape of the ontology of the container.
