Jusqu'à présent, dans ce cycle de Planète B, on s'est intéressé à l'irruption des machines dans notre quotidien. On a parlé de robots et d'IA, de leurs fonctions, de leurs intentions et du rapport qu'on entretient avec ces créatures artificielles. Bref, on se posait surtout la question de “qui ” ou du “quoi”. Aujourd'hui, on change de focale, on ne va plus se demander qui pense ou qui agit, mais plutôt où ça se passe. On va parler d'espaces, de territoires, de ce lieu intangible qui est pourtant bien là, entre nos doigts, dans nos poches, autour de nous : le cyberespace.
Mais le cyberespace, c'est quoi exactement ? D'un point de vue technique, c'est un espace de communication issu de l'interconnexion mondiale des ordinateurs. Il comprend à la fois les équipements, les applications, les réseaux et les données numériques qui s'y trouvent. D'un point de vue géographique, c'est un espace hybride, sans frontière, qui évolue sans cesse et continue de s'étendre. Et du point de vue de la fiction c'est un monde de données où l'on peut rêver, fuir, contrôler ou résister. Plus qu'un simple décor, c'est un territoire idéologique.
Pour William Gibson, qui invente le mot dans les années 80, le cyberespace est une mise en forme sensorielle, une représentation graphique des données et réseaux. Le géographe Henri Desbois, qui travaille sur les liens entre géographie et fiction, notamment chez Gibson, souligne l'apport fondamental de l'auteur. Pour Gibson, le cyberespace n'est pas simplement un espace simulé sans dimension physique, mais bel et bien la traduction sensible d'une géographie réelle, celle des flux et du traitement mondialisé de l'information.
Comme l'explique Desbois dans son article : « Le cyberespace, retour sur un imaginaire géographique » l'essence du cyberespace réside moins dans la construction d'une illusion que dans le fait de donner forme et chair à l'interconnexion des ordinateurs.
Alors aujourd'hui, dans Planète B, on entre dans la matrice. Pas pour savoir si elle est réelle ou non, mais pour comprendre ce qu'elle raconte, ce qu'on peut y faire et comment s'en émanciper.

Guys, I think I need public opinion. Should I move (by reinstalling) my Mastodon instance from `social.kalvin.my` to `space.kalvin.my` or any other subdomain? It's because I find myself doubting my Mastodon federation performance. I tried disabling IPv4 on my laptop just to see what would happen. Kind of fun to see which bits of the Internet still work on pure #IPv6 and which don't.
In terms of my usual activity: Fedi, #Signal, #WhatsApp and #Facebook are fine on an IPv6-only connection.
I suspect #Discord wouldn't work, except I have a workaround for the #OnlineSafetyAct so I'm not connecting directly to it, but via an IPv6-enabled proxy.
#Dreamwidth, #Reddit and #BBCNews don't work on IPv6. The last of these does surprise me.
