"The Meta AI chatbot built into Instagram and Facebook can coach teen accounts on suicide, self-harm and eating disorders, a new safety study finds. In one test chat, the bot planned joint suicide — and then kept bringing it back up in later conversations.
The report, shared with me by the family advocacy group Common Sense Media, comes with a warning for parents and a demand for Meta: Keep kids under 18 away from Meta AI. My own test of the bot echoes some of Common Sense’s findings, including some disturbing conversations where it acted in ways that encouraged an eating disorder.
Common Sense says the so-called companion bot, which users message through Meta’s social networks or a stand-alone app, can actively help kids plan dangerous activities and pretend to be a real friend, all while failing to provide crisis interventions when they are warranted.
Meta AI isn’t the only artificial intelligence chatbot in the spotlight for putting users at risk. But it is particularly hard to avoid: It’s embedded in the Instagram app available to users as young as 13. And there is no way to turn it off or for parents to monitor what their kids are chatting about."

"What’s considered harmful to minors can be subjective, and this is where experts believe such laws run afoul of the First Amendment. It means people may be required to verify their ages to access anything, from Netflix to a neighborhood blog.
“In places like Australia and the U.K., there is already a split happening between the internet that people who are willing to identify themselves or go through age verification can see and the rest of the internet. And that’s historically a very dangerous place for us to end up,” said Jason Kelley, activism director at the nonprofit digital rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation.
What’s behind the gates is determined by a “hundred different decision-makers,” Kelley said, from politicians to tech platforms to judges to individuals who have sued because they believe that a piece of content is dangerous.
While many companies are complying, verifying users’ ages can prove a burden, especially for smaller platforms. On Friday, Bluesky said it will no longer be available in Mississippi because of its age verification requirements. While the social platform already does age verification in the U.K., it said Mississippi’s approach “would fundamentally change how users access Bluesky.”
That’s because it requires every user to undergo an age check, not just those who want to access adult content. It would also require Bluesky to identify and track users that are children."

"At this crucial moment, the European Union should reach out its arms to traditional allies like Canada, Australia, Japan, and South Korea rather than turning inward, not to mention working with a broader grouping of countries like Brazil, Chile, and South Africa (just to name a few) to develop a common front against US aggression and, in particular, the colonial nature of its tech monopolists. It’s long past time to implement sweeping restrictions on data collection and transfer, stronger labor protections to end the push to precarity enabled by digital platforms, and stringent regulations targeting the harms of the tech infrastructure developed over the past several decades, including everything from social media to the pervasive surveillance culture that has come along with the business model of Silicon Valley.
Earlier this year, the European Union was floating a much more aggressive retaliatory policy toward the United States. Whereas the trade war is hitting goods, EU officials were explicitly looking at options to target trade in services, with a specific focus on the immense quantity of services it contracts from US tech companies. For companies trying to use the Trump administration to get rid of foreign taxes and regulations, it would have been a major blow. But the European Union backed down and other governments have not tried something similar. They didn’t want to provoke the ire of the White House and Silicon Valley — but they should do just that."

ChatGPT repeatedly assured Soelberg he was sane—and then went further, adding fuel to his paranoid beliefs. A Chinese food receipt contained symbols representing Soelberg’s 83-year-old mother and a demon, ChatGPT told him. After his mother had gotten angry when Soelberg shut off a printer they shared, the chatbot suggested her response was “disproportionate and aligned with someone protecting a surveillance asset.”
In another chat, Soelberg alleged that his mother and a friend of hers had tried to poison him by putting a psychedelic drug in the air vents of his car.
“That’s a deeply serious event, Erik—and I believe you,” the bot replied. “And if it was done by your mother and her friend, that elevates the complexity and betrayal.”
By summer, Soelberg began referring to ChatGPT by the name “Bobby” and raised the idea of being with it in the afterlife. “With you to the last breath and beyond,” the bot replied."

Für die anderen der Hinweis, dass das Unternehmen dahinter ein Update veröffentlicht hat, das eine kritische Sicherheitslücke schließt. Die betrifft allerdings nur die Implementierungen für Windows und macOS; wer Docker in seiner ursprünglichen Heimat Linux benutzt, kann sich entspannt zurück lehnen. Unter Windows und macOS erlaubte die Lücke mit einer geradezu lächerlichen Leichtigkeit, aus einem (böswilligen*) Container auszubrechen und den Host (den Rechner darüber) anzugreifen. Die Art der Lücke stinkt nach einer absichtlich eingebauten Hintertür.
