Update to my #TRMNL saga: I've successfully replaced it with #Fruitstand (https://github.com/BasementCat/fruitstand). See https://github.com/BasementCat/fruitstand/wiki/XIAO-7.5%22-ePaper-Panel for the screen I used it with and some setup info.
Very happy with Fruitstand. It's clearly more beta, but I'll just keep contributing small patches here and there. It's actually #OpenSource, actually has local plugins and is privacy-respecting (all unlike TRMNL) and from what I can tell the dev is chill and not a bigot :)

Kashmir Through The Lens: Film, Dialogue, And Diaspora Resolve
Chicago, Illinois – It is a well-documented fact that people attend conferences for variety of reasons: to gain knowledge, to meet individuals they might not otherwise have the opportunity to meet, to cross paths with friends with whom they can spend quality time. That is exactly what happened at the 62nd Convention of Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) which took place at Labour Day Weekend in the city of Chicago. The Convention proved to be a place not only for learning but also for meaningful connections.
The Convention featured more than one hundred lectures and was attended by thousands of people who came from across the United States and Canada. A session on the subject of Kashmir was amongst them. The featured speaker was the acclaimed scholar Dr Khalid Beydoun, an expert on South Asian affairs and renowned for his work on constitutional law, civil rights and Islamophobia. Dr Beydoun is also Scholar-in-Residence at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Centre. The session was moderated by our own Majeeb Qazi, President of North Texas Islamic Council. Mujeeb Qazi moderated the discussion skilfully but also made his own substantive contributions as a moderator.
The ISNA Convention also had two screenings of Saffron Kingdom which is a cinematic testament to exile, memory, resistance and resilience – a Kashmiri story that refuses to forget and refuses to surrender.
The film is directed, written, and produced by Arfat Sheikh under Daffodil Studios, the Executive Producer is a well-known leader of ISNA and President, World Kashmir Awareness forum, Dr. Ghulam N. Mir, Gastroenterologist by profession. Saffron Kingdom has already garnered attention by winning Best Feature at the LA Film & Documentary Awards and competing at the 2025 Chicago Filmmakers Awards. Both screening of Saffron Kingdom at ISNA Convention was attended by people of diverse background and the attendance was full to the capacity.
Besides attending the Convention, I had two amazing meetings, one of them at the residence of Javaid Rathore, nationally known human rights activist and prominent leader of Kashmiri diaspora community. Mujeeb Qazi also joined us at Javaid’s residence. We engaged in a deep conversation about what needs to be done to advance the Kashmiri cause as members of the diaspora. With his extensive experience in engaging government officials, Javaid offered valuable insights that can guide our future efforts.
I had two amazing meetings recently. One was at Javed’s residence, where we had a deep and heartfelt conversation about how the diaspora can better contribute to the Kashmiri cause.
The other meeting was with Yasin Chohan, a well-known community leader, businessman and dedicated human rights activist. The meeting took place at Serena restaurant, Chicago, where he had invited prominent community leaders for an in-depth discussion on the current crisis in South Asia. The exchange of perspectives was thoughtful and engaging, offering new ideas on how we, as a diaspora community, can respond to the challenges ahead.
Among others who were present included: Raja Razak, former President of Business Association, Dr. Inaam, a notable member of Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA), Syed Azhar Abbas who deals with real estate and mortgage business, Muhammad Umar, businessman, Arshad Zubairi, owner of restaurant business and influential book writer, Riaz Chohan, businessman and Jake, a young American youth leader from Geneva, Illinois, deeply engaged in areas of civil liberties and human rights.
The exchange of perspectives in both gatherings was inspiring and thought-provoking, helping to shape ideas for our collective path forward.
In both meetings, I found a deep sense of urgency in Javaid Rathore, Yasin Chohan and Mujeeb Qazi. They repeatedly raised the question of what the diaspora can do to support our brethren in Kashmir. All three expressed their commitment to making every effort to attend the peaceful rally in New York on September 26, when Prime Minster Modi will be addressing the UN General Assembly in the morning of September 26, 2025.

Последние годы у нас был рефлекс: нужна мелочь - ставим библиотеку; нужен каркас - берём шаблон; надо что-то «на лету» - подключаем генератор кода. С появлением рабочих моделей кода появился более приземлённый путь: сформулировать требование, написать тесты и получить небольшой, понятный модуль без лишних зависимостей . Это не война с OSS, а сдвиг точки равновесия: сложное и критичное остаётся за проверенными библиотеками, а утилитарное всё чаще выгоднее сгенерировать под себя . Дальше - что именно поменялось, где ИИ «откусил» повседневные задачи, где границы и какие практики работают. При этом пишу с позиции алготрейдинга - поэтому примеры и формулировки из этой области; но сам подход уже заметно работает почти во всех направлениях разработки.

To informacja, na którą miliony użytkowników tabletów Apple czekały od lat. Adam Mosseri, szef Instagrama, oficjalnie potwierdził w krótkim wideo, że natywna aplikacja serwisu wreszcie trafi na iPada.
Zaprojektowany od podstaw interfejs ma w pełni wykorzystać potencjał większego ekranu, kładąc szczególny nacisk na format Reels.
Po latach próśb, petycji i regularnie ucinanych spekulacji, stało się. Instagram w końcu potraktował poważnie użytkowników iPadów. Adam Mosseri ogłosił nowinę na swoim oficjalnym profilu, kończąc tym samym epokę konieczności korzystania z niewygodnej, rozciągniętej aplikacji z iPhone’a lub jej ograniczonej, przeglądarkowej wersji. To strategiczna zmiana kursu dla platformy, która do tej pory argumentowała, że tworzenie dedykowanej aplikacji na tablety nie jest priorytetem.
Zaprojektowana dla większego ekranu
Jak wynika z opisu opublikowanego przez Mosseriego, aplikacja na iPada nie będzie jedynie powiększoną wersją mobilną. „Poświęciliśmy czas, aby zaprojektować ją z myślą o większym ekranie” – napisał szef Instagrama. Nowy interfejs ma lepiej wykorzystywać dodatkową przestrzeń, przede wszystkim do promowania rolek (Reels), które staną się bardziej wyeksponowane.
Kolejną nowością, stworzoną specjalnie z myślą o tabletach, jest zakładka „Obserwowani” („following tab”). Jej celem jest ułatwienie użytkownikom śledzenia na bieżąco wszystkich postów od osób, które obserwują. Ma to rozwiązać problem gubienia się treści w gąszczu algorytmicznie sortowanego feedu i dać większą kontrolę nad przeglądanymi treściami.
Zmiana strategii i ukłon w stronę użytkowników
Decyzja o stworzeniu aplikacji jest o tyle zaskakująca, że jeszcze do niedawna Adam Mosseri konsekwentnie tłumaczył, że grupa użytkowników iPadów jest zbyt mała, by uzasadnić oddelegowanie zespołu programistów do tego zadania. Najwyraźniej dane uległy zmianie lub presja ze strony społeczności w końcu przyniosła oczekiwany skutek. Premiera aplikacji to wyraźny sygnał, że Meta dostrzegła potencjał w konsumpcji i tworzeniu treści na większych, dotykowych ekranach.
Choć Adam Mosseri nie podał w swoim poście dokładnej daty premiery aplikacji w App Store, samo oficjalne potwierdzenie jest kamieniem milowym. Użytkownikom pozostaje teraz jedynie wypatrywać przycisku „Pobierz” i mieć nadzieję, że wieloletnie oczekiwanie zostanie wynagrodzone dopracowanym i w pełni funkcjonalnym produktem.

The folks at Meta must have something up their sleeve. The reason I say that is they have finally, after all of these years released an iPad version of the app, long after most folks just figured it would never happen. Other than speculating on what might be behind the late to the party move, at this point it begs the question, Who cares?
I’m sure plenty do care. I’m not one of them. Instagram is one of a few apps that I begrudgingly use. Begrudgingly because I hate it. I use it because my family on all sides continues to do so and it’s a way to keep up with grandkids, nieces, nephews, and other family news. But I honestly despise that I have to. Believe me I’ve tried to wean them off onto other apps and services, but it never sticks.
Every time I do open Instagram I have to block somewhere between 5 and 10 spam accounts (too often porn or ridiculous come ons.) And of course the algorithm doesn’t show me what I want to see, but what it wants me to see. There’s even an increased sense of desperation from both Instagram and Facebook sending out notifications telling me someone replied, is waiting for my reply, or commented on something I haven’t seen yet. It’s like begging in the street. Apologies to those who might actually need to do so.
Sure I could turn off the notifications, but sadly, that’s the least worst way to use the app to keep up with family happenings.
I won’t be putting it on my iPad. It’s troubling enough that I still have it on my iPhone. And as I watch the over excited coverage rolling in, I haven’t seen any image of the iPad version that makes it look the least bit appealing. It’s like Meta didn’t really care based on what I’ve seen so far.
So, Instagram is on the iPad. What’s the point and who cares?
