"An analysis by Hanna Homestead of the National Priorities Project, a nonpartisan research group, found that if Trump deployed 3,000 National Guard troops to Chicago it would cost taxpayers around $1,590,000 per day. It’s the latest runaway expense — expected to climb into the hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars — connected to Trump’s efforts to turn the U.S. into a genuine police state.
“Deploying National Guard troops to Chicago is only going to add to taxpayers’ growing tab for these law-and-order optics,” said Stephen Ellis, the president of Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan budget watchdog group. “Spending millions of dollars a day on troops milling about major American cities is a waste of their time and squanders precious resources.”
A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that Trump’s deployment of troops to Los Angeles was illegal and harkened back to Britain’s use of soldiers as law enforcement officers in colonial America. He warned that Trump intends to transform the National Guard into a presidential police force.
It remains unclear whether that judicial decision will be enforced. Given the Supreme Court ruling earlier this year decreeing that federal district courts cannot issue injunctions against federal policies nationwide, any decision on a Chicago occupation would have to come from a case of its own.
Trump has threatened to deploy troops to Chicago for weeks, following militarized crackdowns in Los Angeles in June and in Washington, D.C., last month. “I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in D.C. Chicago will be safe again, and soon,” Trump posted to TruthSocial on Tuesday, the same day that the federal judge deemed the California troop deployment illegal."

My two largest are going to be a NAS backup and a media server. But before I can set them up to do that, they’re all in use. So I have to shuffle my data around between flash drives, dropbox, etc. etc. so I can format my two largest drives to new formats (ext4 & exFAT).
Not everything is USB-C / 3.0 . So this step is a big bottleneck.

"Minutes after the perpetrator of the shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis last week was identified, YouTube appeared to delete several videos they had shared that morning.
But not before the videos were downloaded and reshared in full on X.
Within hours, the platform was flooded with wild claims about the shooter and her motivation, with everyone from Elon Musk, the site’s owner, to the head of the FBI and left-wing activists posting half-baked allegations blaming anti-Christian hate, transgender genocide, and white supremacy. Many of the posts racked up millions of views per X’s public metrics.
While other social media platforms were also used to share unfounded claims about the shooter’s motivations, X, under Musk, has become the perfect platform to supercharge the spread of dangerous disinformation during breaking news events. The entire team tasked with tackling disinformation on the platform was first culled years ago, and now X's biggest users claim they are incentivized by the platform to share out-of-context clickbait content over verified facts."

"As detailed in a yet-to-be-peer-reviewed study, coauthors Petter Törnberg, AI and social media assistant professor, and research assistant Maik Larooij simulated a social media platform that was populated entirely by AI chatbots, powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o large language model, to see if there was anything we could do to stop social media from turning into echo chambers.
They tested out six specific intervention strategies — including switching to chronological news feeds, boosting diverse viewpoints, hiding social statistics like follower counts, and removing account bios — to stop the platform from turning into a polarized hellscape.
To their dismay, none of the interventions worked to a satisfactory degree, and only some showed modest effects. Worse yet, as Ars Technica reports, some of them made the situation even worse.
For instance, ordering the news feed chronologically reduced attention inequality but floated extreme content to the top.
It's a sobering reality that flies in the face of companies' promises of constructing a "digital town square" — as billionaire and X owner Elon Musk once called it — where everybody coexists peacefully.
With or without intervention, social media platforms may be doomed to devolve into a highly polarized breeding ground for extremist thinking."
