One of the hardest adjustments I’ve had joining the #Fediverse is not having an algorithm as part of my experience. It’s all I’ve ever known with respect to #socialmedia, so its absence is incredibly obvious to me.
However, when I think about what I’m actually missing…it’s a complicated answer. The same technologies that power discovery fuel addiction, just as those that power relevance fuel manipulation.
Of course, those benefits aren’t worth the consequences, at least as far as the big picture is concerned. But I wonder if an ethical middle ground will ever exist.

I'm not too concerned with "exposure" because #Mastodon isn't trying to make things viral. The shenanigans over there aren't culturally competitive here. And, there aren't enough vectors, and you can just cut off an entire instance.
Ironically, block lists on #Bluesky create another network of people all blocking the same person.
The blocked person is still there—you've just created a bifurcation in the system. Here, they're cut off. I'm not too concerned with Mastodon.

I'm aware, but #Mastodon is not designed for virality. The issue is the clusters and the closeness centrality. Misinformation spreads the fastest in highly connected networks.
For example, you and I are nowhere near the same network. We're not in a cluster.
