Getting Started With Open Source Through Community Events
In July, I joined Raffaella Suardini and Sage Abdullah for the Djangonaut Space Space Reviewers Episode 6, where we reviewed a Django PR during a live stream. This was a fun event. I won’t get into the technical aspects of the review, and I won’t point out the many mistakes I made. Instead, I want to revisit several “getting started with open source” community events and reflect on my personal growth since I first got involved with open source.
I hope this encourages others to attend those events and similarly get involved!
Tutorial office hours 🕐
My first open source contribution happened accidentally during DjangoCon US 2023. I volunteered to host office hours to help tutorial attendees set up their development environments. I went through the tutorial projects, found a missing dependency in one of them, and reported it on the conference chat. A conference organizer, Tim Schilling, responded and suggested that I open a pull request (PR) to the project. I remember thinking to myself, “Really? I can do that?”.
Sprints 🏃
During the Sprint Days of the conference, I participated and opened two PRs to address accessibility issues. I didn’t know much about accessibility at that point, and I would not have known how to navigate the contribution process and pick out issues on my own. Thankfully, the project leaders were there to guide new contributors, and I was able to gain hands-on experience with these first few PRs.
Testathons 🧪
There was another event that took place during the Sprint Days called Testathon. I had heard of hackathons before, but I had not heard of testathons. I attended and found out they were like live stream coding or group pair programming. One person shared their screen and the group chimed in on strategies. The purpose of the testathon was to show people how to test open source projects against Django’s beta release. The code driver (or anyone else in the group) would point out what files to look for, how to run tests, and how to open PRs. Every project is slightly different, from project setup to contributing etiquette, and I learned several different things from attending 2 testathons. I loved the interactive and intimate nature of the event. It exposed me to another aspect of open source projects and contributions. I also thought it was very brave of people to share their screens and work through code together in a group. My brain would have short circuited if I were put on the spot like that!

From DjangoCon US 2023, I participated in 3 different types of events where I got hands-on experience with open source contributions, and I wanted more! I was curious about the live stream coding and group pair programming opportunities, too. This was definitely outside of my comfort zone, and I wanted to know how I could overcome my own inhibitions and participate more actively. I wanted to be able to jump into events so nonchalantly as everyone else seemed to do. (Of course, that’s the perception. Now, I know that most people feel some level of nervousness or anxiety when they are hosting or attending such events, and that’s absolutely normal.)
Djangonaut Space 🚀
When the Djangonaut Space program was announced, I jumped at the opportunity. I applied and was accepted for the first session, which took place from mid-January to early March of 2024. With the guidance of the Navigator and Captain on my team, I learned to sift through the Django’s Trac ticket management system, pick out a ticket, and I also faced my fear of posting comments publicly. The PR was merged, and it was thrilling to see my GitHub username in the history of the Django code base.
In March 2024, when the first Djangonaut Space session came to a close, Tim, a program organizer, asked if anyone was interested in hosting a “Getting Started With Contributing” event. I expressed my interest, and Tim suggested a ticket to work on. Unfortunately, I didn’t follow through. How could I host a “Getting Started With Contributing” event? First, I wasn’t sure if I even knew how to get started. Second, I wasn’t ready to lead an event and the discussions while simultaneously sharing my screen and thinking out loud. Finally, I wasn’t ready to be on camera in the public eye. Even though I had just finished the Djangonaut Space program, I hadn’t overcome my own inhibitions. I didn’t ask for guidance, and the event never materialized.
Space Reviewers 👾
About 8 months later in November 2024, Space Reviewers launched its very first episode. I thought it was such a creative format. I wanted to be a part of it. By this time, I was getting a lot of training with event organizing through my role as the Session Organizer for Djangonaut Space, but I wasn’t sure how to ask about joining the Space Reviewers crew, and maybe it was too early in the formation of the group to bring on another member.
It wasn’t until June 2025 that I finally asked if I could help out with Space Reviewers. The crew welcomed me as a new member. I started out by making a pre-recorded video, a PR Review Deep Dive, that was uploaded to the Djangonaut Space YouTube channel. I had a lot of fun recording and editing the video.
A month later, in July 2025, the crew members planned for the next episode. Raffaella scheduled time for the event and created the show notes, and I was taking on Tim’s role as a co-organizer. Because I would be managing the video stream and sharing my screen, I realized that I could be the single point of failure during the event. There was no safety element that a pre-recorded video offers. If my internet went down, or if my computer crashed, or if I stupidly clicked the wrong button, the live stream could come to a halt. It was a terrifying thought, but I took on the risks and pushed forward.
On the day of the event, there was a delay to the start time and some fumbles on my end, but overall, it was very fun and productive. People joined and shared their tips and tricks in the live chat. By the end, we were able to walk through the review process and post our comments on the PR. Looking back, I think making the pre-recorded video was a great stepping stone towards hosting the live stream.
I’m so glad I had the opportunity to work with Raffaella and Sage as part of Space Reviewers. They have a lot of insights and perspectives that I didn’t have. I had a lot of fun taking on the new challenges that came with organizing this event. Initially, I struggled internally as I tried to face some of my fears. There were moments leading up to the event where I thought to myself, “Why did I volunteer to do this???” In the end, I’m glad I did.
Personal growth 🌱
Some of the challenges I overcame might not seem like a big deal, but when I compare myself to where I was at the beginning of DjangoCon US 2023, I can see my personal growth quite prominently. Now, I know how to get started with contributing, and I am able to walk people through the process. I am also a lot more comfortable taking ownership of organizing and leading events. (I remember a time when I constantly needed to ask for permission or confirmation before executing an action.) I can brush off the fumbles I make as the camera is rolling, and I can continue on with the discussion.
When I revisit the community events that I have participated in over the past 2 years, from Space Reviewers, to Sprints, to Testathons, to Tutorial office hours, I realize how far I have come. I am also reminded of what it was like to be absolutely new to open source and to the community. Although I still feel somewhat new, I’m not a deer in headlights anymore. I’m still trying to find my place in open source, and the best way to do that is to continue showing up and continue helping out. One small PR at a time, one small review at a time. One little blog, one little video…

Donald Trump hat das Entwicklungshilfeprogramm USAID gestrichen. Die Leistungen der USA an die Dritte Welt sinken von 64,7 Mrd. $ (2023) auf 28,4 Mrd. (2026). Auch Deutschland kürzt, zum Entsetzen der Entwicklungsorganisationen: statt 37,9 Mrd. (2023) gibt es nur noch 27,8 Mrd. (2026). Die anderen Industriestaaten verfahren ähnlich. Der Gesamtbetrag der Leistungen an die Dritte Welt sinkt von 213,1 Mrd. $ (2023) auf 151,6 Mrd. (2026).
Der Trend zum Eigennutz wirkt sich also vor allem zulasten der ärmsten Völker der Welt aus. Das führt zu der Frage: Kann die reduzierte Nord-Süd-Unterstützung durch eine stärkere Süd-Süd-Kooperation ersetzt oder zumindest gemindert werden? Schon seit langem bestehen Überlegungen und Bestrebungen, diesen Weg zu verfolgen. So wird seit 2003 jeweils am 12. September der Tag für die Süd-Süd-Zusammenarbeit begangen. Offen bleibt jedoch, ob solche Resolutionen, Aktionen und Planungen tatsächlich etwas bewirken oder ob sie sich – wie beim jüngsten Gipfeltreffen der ‘Schanghai Organisation für Zusammenarbeit’ – eher auf vollmundige Ankündigungen beschränken.
Der Süd-Süd-Tag der Vereinten Nationen soll ein Anstoß sein, die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Entwicklungsländern zu fördern. Er geht zurück auf eine Konferenz 2001 in Brüssel, auf der dieses Ziel ein zentrales Thema war. In den Sektoren Gesundheit, Bildung, Umweltschutz, Wissenschaft, Technologie und Handel sollten Waren- und Wissensaustausch intensiviert werden. Das Datum erinnert an den 12. September 1978, als der ‘Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries’ verabschiedet wurde. Dieser Plan bildete die Grundlage für Aktionen der Süd-Süd-Zusammerbeit. Weltweit finden an diesem Tag Veranstaltungen statt, die sich mit dieser Thematik befassen und dafür werben.
Süd-Süd-Kooperation ist kein verbindliches oder institutionalisiertes Organ. Sie bezeichnet die Beziehungen und die wirtschaftliche Zusammerabeit zwischen den Ländern des globalen Südens, den sogenannten Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern. Ziel ist es, durch Verbesserung und Intensivierung der zwischenstaatlichen Wirtschaftsbeziehungen den Entwicklungsrückstand gegenüber den Industriestaaten zu verringern und die Abhängigkeiten abzubauen, die oft noch aus Kolonial- und Imperialismuszeiten herrühren.
Als Grundsätze der Süd-Süd-Kooperation werden im allgemeinen folgende Punkte gesehen: Nutzung und Teilung der gemeinsamen Erfahrungen und Ziele; gegenseitiger Respekt der staatlichen Souveränität; Partnerschaft zwischen gleichberechtigten Ländern; gemeinsame Unternehmungen von Staaten des Südens; gemeinsam die Herausforderungen der Zukunft meistern; gleichmäßige Nutzung der Vorteile der Zusammenarbeit; keine Vorgabe von Bedingungen; keine Einmischung von kooperierenden Staaten.
Als Meilenstein der Süd-Süd-Kooperation wird die Bandung-Konferenz von 1955 angesehen, als sich 29 asiatische und afrikanische Staaten ohne Beteiligung ehemaliger Kolonialmächte trafen, um ihre Interessen abzustecken und die Entkolonialisierungsbestrebungen zu fördern. Erste Ergebnisse waren u.a. die Bewegung der Blockfreien Staaten (gegründet 1961), die OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, 1960) oder die Gruppe der 77 (Zusammenschluss von Staaten des Globalen Südens innerhalb der UNO, 1964). Im Jahre 1978 gründeten die Vereinten Nationen das Office for South-South-Cooperation (UNOSSC), um den Süd-Süd-Handel durch Aktivitäten der UN-Organe zu fördern. UNOSSC ist eine Art Wissenszentrum, das allen Beteiligten Beratungsdienste im Bereich Süd-Süd- und Dreieckskooperation anbietet.
Ziel aller dieser Akvitäten waren eine stärkere Zusammenarbeit zwischen Industrie- und Entwicklungsländern, eine gleichberechtigte Integration in den Weltmarkt und die Einbindung in die Weltpolitik mit einer gesteigerten Verhandlungsmacht der Schwellenländer. Vor allem letztere engagierten sich stark, wie sich in der Gründung der G 20, des BRICS und der BASIC-Gruppe zeigt:
– G20 ist die informelle Gruppe der 19 wichtigsten Industrie- und Schwellenländer sowie der Europäischen und der Afrikanischen Union. Sie trifft sich seit 1999, um internationale wirtschaftliche und finanzielle Fragen zu diskutieren, und repräsentiert über 85 % des weltweiten BIP und zwei Drittel der Weltbevölkerung.
– BRICS ist ein informelles internationales Forum großer Volkswirtschaften, das 2006 als Gegenpol zu den westlichen Industriestaaten gegründet wurde und sich für eine multipolare Weltordnung einsetzt. Der Name stammt von den Anfangsbuchstaben der Gründungsmitglieder Brasilien, Russland, Indien, China und Südafrika. 2024 sind Ägypten, Äthiopien, Iran und die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate sowie 2025 Indonesien dazugekommen. BRICS führt jährlich Gipfeltreffen zu Themenschwerpunkten durch.
– Basic-Gruppe: 2009 vereinbarten Brasilien, China, Indien und Südafrika ein gemeinsames Handeln auf der Weltklimakonferenz.
Zudem fanden weitere Lateinamerika-Afrika-Gipfeltreffen statt, z.B. 2006 in Abuja (Nigeria) mit 65 Statsoberhäuptern und 2009 in Venezuela mit 61 Vertreter/innen. Auf regionaler Ebene gab bzw. gibt es inzwischen eine Vielzahl von Organisationen, die teils stärker wirtschaftlich ausgerichtet sind, teils eher politisch, teils mit Finanzierungsaufgaben und teils zur gemeinsamen Lösung branchenspezifischer Aufgaben (Einzelheiten im Anhang).
Welche Rolle der Süd-Süd-Kooperation inzwischen zugemessen wird, belegt eine Aktion der Welthandelskonferenz (UNCTAD). Sie veröffentlichte im November 2024 ein „Handbuch für den Rahmen zur Messung der Süd-Süd-Kooperation“. Die UNCTAD geht davon aus, dass diese „eine Quelle der Innovation und der gegenseitigen Unterstützung ist …. und neben anderen Entwicklungshilfemaßnahmen maßgeblich zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung“ beiträgt. Das Handbuch basiert auf umfangreichen Erfahrungen von Pionierländern und deren freiwilliger Mitarbeit sowie auf der Unterstützung durch die regionalen Wirtschaftskommissionen der UN (ECA, ESCAP, ESCWA und ECLAC). Sein Schwerpunkt liegt auf staatlich geleiteten Aktivitäten, die auf Entwicklungs- und humanitäre Zwecke ausgerichtet sind. Von kommerziellen Interessen betriebene Maßnahmen sowie der Austausch zwischen privaten Parteien sind nicht einbezogen.
Das Handbuch umfasst acht Kapitel. Das erste bietet einen konzeptionellen Überblick und den historischen Hintergrund. Kapitel 2 befasst sich mit dem Wert der Daten und den Herausforderungen bei ihrer Messung und Verarbeitung. Dem folgt in Kapitel 3 die Beschreibung der Mitwirkung und des Instrumentariums. Kapitel 4 untersucht den nationalen institutionellen Rahmen. Im 5. Kapitel geht es um Details der benötigten Datenquellen. Kapitel 6 befasst sich mit der Qualitätssicherung im Einklang mit amtlichen Statistiken. Die Kapitel 7 und 8 konzentrieren sich auf die Analyse, Dokumentation und Verbreitung von Daten und Statistiken der Süd-Süd-Zusammenarbeit.
Tatsache ist, dass in den vergangenen Jahren der Süd-Süd-Handel stärker expandierte als der Nord-Süd-Handel. Der globale Süden leistet einen immer größer werdenden Beitrag zur Weltwirtschaft. Auch die Süd-Süd-Investitionen sind deutlich höher als früher. Dies liegt zum Teil an den besonderen Fachkenntnissen, die eingebracht werden können, teils an der Skepsis von Staaten des Südens gegen Investoren aus dem Norden, teils aber auch an erhöhter Risikobereitschaft von Staaten des Südens.
Eine besondere Rolle spielen die chinesischen Akvitäten in afrikanischen Staaten. Schwerpunkt sind der Ausbau der Infrastruktur und der Tausch afrikanischer Rohstoffe gegen chinesische Industrieprodukte. Indien bemüht sich um ein ähnliches Vorgehen. Dabei ist kennzeichnend, dass die chinesische und die indische Entwicklungskooperation eng in die Außen-, Wirtschafts- und Sicherheitspolitik eingebunden sind. Im Unterschied zu westlichen Industriestaaten gilt in diesen Beziehungen das Prinzip der Nichteinmischung in die inneren Angelegenheiten des Empfängerlandes, was diesen zumeist sehr gelegen kommt. Verhaltensauflagen werden in der Regel abgelehnt.
Dabei ist nicht zu übersehen, dass Aktivitäten wie die chinesischen auch Nachteile mit sich bringen können. Sie erzeugen eine Abhängigkeit von Rohstoffexporten – statt die Weiterverarbeitung im Lande zu fördern -, sie bewirken eine hohe Verschuldung nebst entsprechender Belastung der Haushalte, sie setzen die Empfängerländer einem Konkurrenzdruck durch billige Importe von Fertigprodukten aus, und sie bieten den Geberländern gute Chancen, ihre weltpolitischen und militärischen Zielsetzungen zu verbreiten.
In den letzten Jahren hat es zwei wichtige Ansätze gegeben, um den Ländern des globalen Südens eine größere Mitwirkung in internationaler Politik sowie einen höheren Anteil an der weltweiten Wertschöpfung zu verschaffen. Beide Projekte sind weitgehend gescheitert, obwohl sie ambitioniert vorbereitet waren.
Im Juni 2007 trafen sich in Heiligendamm an der Ostsee Vertreter von acht Industrieländern (G8: Frankreich, Großbritannien, Deutschland, Italien, Russland Japan, Kanada, USA), fünf Schwellenlädern (O5: VR China, Brasilien, Indien, Mexiko, Südafrika), sechs Entwicklungsländern (Ägypten, Algerien, Äthiopien, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal) und sieben internationalen Organisationen (EU, Afrikan. Union, GUS/ehemalige Sowjetrepubliken, Internat. Atomenergieagentur, UNESCO, UNO und WHO).
Schwerpunkt der Tagung war die Globalisierung, vor allem auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent. Verantwortung und Engagement der G8 für die benachteiligten Gruppen der Weltbevölkerung sollten gesteigert werden. Die Tagesordnung war breit und anspruchsvoll: Abbau der globalen Ungleichgewichte, Transparenz der Finanz- und Kapitalmärkte, Investititonsfreiheit in Industrie- und Schwellenländern, soziale Dimension der Globalisierung, wissensbasierte Gesellschaften, Schutz vor Produkt- und Markenpiraterie, nachhaltiger Umgang mit Resourcen, Energieeffizienz und Klimaschutz, besondere Probleme Afrikas.
Die finanziellen Zusagen der G8-Staaten blieben begrenzt auf ein 45 Mrd. schweres Programm zur Bekämpfung von AIDS, Malaria und Tuberkulose in Afrika. Konkrete Vereinbarungen über Klimaschutzziele scheiterten am Einspruch von USA, China und Indien. Eine Senkung der weltweiten CO2-Emissionen wurde nicht vereinbart, sondern nur „ernsthaft in Betracht gezogen“. Ein freiwilliger (!) Verhaltenskodex für riskante Investmentfonds traf auf den Widerstand von USA und Großbritannien. Der weitweit zunehmende Protektionsismus wurde zwar beklagt, Maßnahmen dagegen blieben jedoch aus. Die Teilnehmer verpflichteten sich, den Schutz vor Produkt- und Markenpiraterie zu verstärken und die Nachfrage nach gefälschten Produkten einzudämmen. Einig war man sich darin, die Gipfelberatungen von G8 und O5 fortzusetzen.
Im Juni/Juli 2025 fand in Sevilla die vierte internationale UNO-Entwicklungsfinanzierungskonferenz statt. Antworten und Lösungen blieben jedoch aus. Der Westen kürzt weiterhin seine Entwicklungsgelder und verschärft die Schuldenlast des Südens, obwohl 2025 urspünglich einmal als „Jahr des Schuldenerlasses“ geplant war. In der Schlusserklärung, die ehrlicherweise ‘Compromiso’ genannt wurde, fielen sämtliche Anliegen der übershuldeten Staaten unter den Tisch. 4)
Die langjährige Forderung nach einer UNO-Schuldenkonvention wurde gestrichen. Dort sollten die Interessen der Schuldnerländer des Südens und die Gläubiger aus dem Norden (Staaten, private Kreditoren, Banken und Rohstoffhändler) gleichberechtigt vertreten sein. Diese Hauptforderung des Südens hat es noch nicht einmal als Absicht in die Schlusserklärung geschafft. Immerhin bestehen 61% der Schulden gegenüber privaten Gläubigern, und die Zinsen sind weitaus höher als in den USA und der EU. In 48 Staaten liegen die Zinszahlungen über den Ausgaben für Bildung oder Gesundheit.
Zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen hatten bereits weitgreifende Bedingungen für eine Schuldenkonvention aufgelistet:
– Zeitlich klar begrenzte Verhandlungsdauer, Gleichbehandlung beider Seiten;
– Zahlungsmoratorium für die Dauer der Verhandlungen;
– Keine Verwendung erlassener staatlicher Schulden zur Zahlung an private Gläubiger
(Bailout);
– keine Koppelung des Schuldenerlasses an rigorose Sparmaßnahmen;
– Erhalt des Kapitalmarktzugangs auch für überschuldete Staaten.
Als notwenig erachtet wurde zudem die Schaffung eines sogenannten Borrowers Club, also eines handlungsfähigen Zusammenschlusses der Schuldnerländer als Spiegelung des bestehenden Pariser Club, der Vereinigung der Gläubiger-Staaten. Deren Vertreter bevorzugen dagegen Einzelfallregelungen, bei denen individuell über Schulden- und Zinserlass, Stundungen und Umstrukturierungen verhandelt wird. Die Verhandlungsposition der Gläubiger ist dann ungleich stärker. Insbesondere die privaten Kreditgeber zeigten sich kompromisslos.
Die Chancen und Vorteile der Süd-Süd- gegenüber der Nord-Süd-Zusammenarbeit sind wahrscheinlich schwächer als erhofft und die Integrationsgewinne geringer als erwartet. Das liegt daran, dass sich die kooperiernden Volkswirtschaften in ihrer Faktor- und Ressourcenausstattung stark ähneln, dass die Kostenunterschiede (deshalb) relativ gering sind und dass Gütermärkte und Infrastruktur nur eine begegrenzte Leistungsfähigkeit aufweisen. Daher wird die Süd-Süd-Kooperation von vielen Wissenschaftlern nicht als Ersatz, sondern bestenfalls als Ergänzung bzw. Erweiterung der weltwirtschaftlichen Integration der Entwicklungsländer eingestuft. 5)
Da Süd-Süd-Kooperation nicht hinreichend wirkt oder in der Realisierung scheitert, wird immer wieder die Forderung nach Dreieckskooperationen vertreten: zwei miteinander kooperierende Staaten des Südens tun sich mit einem Staat des Nordens zusammen, der Finanzmittel und andere Ressourcen einbringt. Insbesondere die OECD macht sich für solche Konstruktionen stark und hat dazu eine Reihe von Materialien erstellt.

This is a tricky one:
I'm seeing a bug on iOS 26 where in a NavigationStack in a .sheet, after going back once, the transition from a view with opaque background -> glass background is broken. The old screen stops moving in the middle of the transition, stays for a little while, then disappears abruptly, as seen at the end of this video.
Anyone seen this too?
Any ideas for how I could work around this?
