Two weeks since calling out some poor reviewer and editor practices, sadly this thread continues.
I was looking through comments from #reviewer2, a different reviewer than the #reviewer1, who used #ChatGPT to suggest papers that should have been included, and which were fake.
#Reviewer2 seems to have also used a LLM model in their review. I wasn't certain until I got to the suggested references shown here. The hyperlinks look okay, but behind them are references to papers that are all Indian case studies and all with the same authors.
I fed to the review into ChatGPT, asking if there was hallmarks of LLM use. It seems that it is likely this review was.
Hmm, it seems there is more poor reviewer practice, and now, two unethical reviews for the same submission not spotted by the editor at Environmental Research Communications.

"The California State Assembly took a big step toward regulating AI on Wednesday night, passing SB 243 — a bill that regulate AI companion chatbots in order to protect minors and vulnerable users. The legislation passed with bipartisan support and now heads to the state Senate for a final vote Friday.
If Governor Gavin Newsom signs the bill into law, it would take effect January 1, 2026, making California the first state to require AI chatbot operators to implement safety protocols for AI companions and hold companies legally accountable if their chatbots fail to meet those standards.
The bill specifically aims to prevent companion chatbots, which the legislation defines as AI systems that provide adaptive, human-like responses and are capable of meeting a user’s social needs – from engaging in conversations around suicidal ideation, self-harm, or sexually explicit content. The bill would require platforms to provide recurring alerts to users – every three hours for minors – reminding them that they are speaking to an AI chatbot, not a real person, and that they should take a break. It also establishes annual reporting and transparency requirements for AI companies that offer companion chatbots, including major players OpenAI, Character.AI, and Replika."

i have very mixed feelings about GPT-OSS and the way "community" is used by big tech in general.
open source in their hands is not generosity, it's strategy. it's free labour, market control, and a friendlier PR mask. they don't do it to empower communities, but to extract value and secure dominance.
yes, the tools can still be useful, like roads built by an exploitative firm. but we shouldn't mistake utility for benevolence. there's a difference between grassroots OSS (Linux, PostgreSQL) and corporate OSS (React, TensorFlow, GPT-OSS). the latter is designed with strings attached.
so when capitalists frame themselves as "open" and "community-driven," it's not emancipation. it's branding.
