Situation: you dont have monitor and peripherals, nor an Ethernet cable (another fun solution), but you know your #raspberrypi and your laptop are on the same network (or will be…) you can use #avahi on the pi to advertise itself on the local network as HOSTNAME.local.

Practically, this means once set up, you don’t need to know the current #ip of the Pi to be able to #ssh in.

Maine expanded access to #COVID vaccinations. The governor ordered all qualified health professionals to administer the vaccine. “Mainers” no longer need a prescription for the COVID vaccine either.

Maine’s Bureau of Insurance has also notified administers of state-regulated insurance that they must cover the cost of #COVID19 vaccines.

Vietnam News Agency and Voice of Vietnam turn 80 – Thanks for the English Lessons!

Both Vietnam’s official news agency and its foreign radio station are celebrating their 80th birthday. (Of course, the Chinese invented radio five years earlier, and the Chinese Republicans … OK, don’t mention the Republicans.)

(1) Vietnam News Agency (VNA)

Vietnam Plus is a website run by the Vietnam News Agency, the one that turns eighty this year, and they published an article yesterday (Friday) that celebrates this anniversary.

The immediate cause for the article is a statement by the newsagency’s party secretary and director Vũ Việt Trang, who "reiterated the Vietnam Newsagency’s status as an important newsagency and national newsagency in the new era" in an interview.

The article is also available in English, on vietnamnews, also run by the VNA, but not quite as comprehensive as the Chinese version on Vietnam Plus.

Nearly 260 [VNA employees] gave their lives for the cause of information, and many more carried wounds for the rest of their lives. Some were poisoned by chemical agents, with consequences that still affect their children and grandchildren.

That’s a reference to all the post-1945 wars, be it those against the French colonial power, against the U.S. war, or the Chinese border war in 1979.

Also mentioned is the "Liberation News Agency", the VNA’s arm in South Vietnam as of October 12,1960, as described in more detail by this VNA article published in 2020.

Apparently, the VNA used shortwave for its information services communications until August 19 1998, when they started their website, vnanet.net. If exactly so, this would be one of the examples where the internet killed shortwave right away.

But the stories of VNA and that of the Voice of Vietnam (VoV) can’t be written separately. The news agency provided VoV (or its precursor Radio Hanoi) with news to read out and to report, and it also transmitted its international teletype news service on these transmitters, which were located at Me Tri "just outside Hanoi", according to a CIA memorandum compiled in June 1969*.

South East Asia DXing has both information and photographic material about the Me Tri transmitting site. 

(2) The Voice of Vietnam (VoV)

Officially, VoV was established even a few days earlier than VNA. They were a few days later on the internet however, following VNA in February 1999.

I learned English with the Voice of Vietnam. VoV was the first foreign station I ever found, and reception was made easy as they used to broadcast on out-of-band frequencies back then. As a kid, I probably listened on 10,040 kHz.

This kind of English courses may look weird nowadays (OK, they always did), but both the English and Chinese VoV services have fluent speakers, without strong accents.

Propozycja, nazwana SANDBOX Act, zakłada stworzenie swoistej „piaskownicy regulacyjnej”, w której firmy technologiczne mogłyby tymczasowo unikać egzekwowania niektórych praw federalnych. Cel? Przyspieszenie innowacji.

Jednak krytycy biją na alarm, ostrzegając, że to furtka do niebezpiecznych eksperymentów i korupcyjnych układów z Big Tech.

Vibe coding, czyli programowanie na czuja. AI miało zastąpić programistów, a stworzyło dla nich nowy rynek pracy

Zgodnie z projektem, firmy rozwijające AI mogłyby ubiegać się o moratorium na egzekwowanie przepisów, które hamują testowanie nowych produktów. W zamian musiałyby przedstawić analizę potencjalnych ryzyk i korzyści. Co jednak budzi największe kontrowersje, to przyznanie Białemu Domowi prawa do uchylania decyzji niezależnych agencji federalnych, odpowiedzialnych za ochronę konsumentów. Taka „piaskownica” mogłaby obowiązywać nawet przez dziesięć lat dla jednego projektu.

Pomysł spotkał się z potężną falą krytyki ze strony organizacji nadzorujących branżę technologiczną. Grupa Tech Oversight Project ostrzega, że ustawa dałaby „bezprecedensowe uprawnienia” administracji, potencjalnie tej Donalda Trumpa, do zawierania umów z gigantami technologicznymi. Wskazuje się na ryzyko, że firmy takie jak Google, Apple, Meta czy OpenAI mogłyby, poprzez wsparcie polityczne, zapewnić sobie ulgowe traktowanie, podczas gdy społeczeństwo stałoby się poligonem doświadczalnym dla niedopracowanych technologii. „To nie do przyjęcia, by ryzykować bezpieczeństwo publiczne dla wzbogacenia firm, które już teraz są warte biliony” – grzmi organizacja Public Citizen.
