Зритель из зала слышит заветную фразу «Come on down!», выбегает к подиуму и соревнуется в угадывании стоимости бытовых товаров. Впервые формат появился в 50-х годах прошлого века, а в 1972 году The Price Is Right подобновили и начали транслировать днём по будням на канале CBS . Но идёт передача не в прайм-тайм, а в 10:00 или 11:00 утра. Несмотря на её странное время показа, знакома она всем американцам. If your government is spending billions of dollars just to beg and remind people to vote — not to tell them who or what to vote for, but simply to participate in the process — then your country has a problem, and it’s not with the voters.
This is, in fact, a sign that those in power are no longer listening to the people, and the people no longer see a reason to engage. It’s the canary in the coal mine for democracy.

This is a weird kind of post to write. It's about zymurgy.
Zymurgy is that crafting of alchoholic beverages. Not as in 'A Cosmopolitan, please', but like, vodka, whisky, cider, wine, etc.
Like a lot of people in the world, I grew up drinking beer, and pretty shitty corporate beer at that. In college the second time around (the oughts), I encountered people who knew how to brew. Well, they knew how to make beer, lets leave it at that. With enough practice, though, we got pretty good at it.
Later I learnt to make cider. Cheap. Then, I learnt to make mead.
Mead fascinates me, because of its long history. It was, after all, the earliest alcoholic beverage known in recorded history. It comes from, of all places, India.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the history of mead to date, and most current, is the role that it played (or rather, didn't play), in the subjugation of the Russian people.
As I have heard it told, the Russian prole was the cultural heir of mead, it having been brought to the indigenous Rus by the Norse Vikings. It was ever since the canonical beverage of the Rus countryside, that is until....one of the Czars bought into a vodka distillery. From that time, vodka came to receive an ever more full-throated endorsement as 'the people's beverage', until it became a matter of patriotism to purchase and consume vodka.
As you might imagine, within a generation or two, generational alcoholism is now pervasive in Rus society.
When I read about this, it occurred to me that there is a portion of the population in the USA that endures much the same fate, as their families or professions have so thoroughly assimilated alcohol into their lives.
Any of us who drink, anywhere in the world, risk contributing to this sort of problem in our communities if we do not exercise great caution and discipline.
