The ThingDoer is really just used as an additional variable scope, so instead of having clean mostly-pure functions where it's obvious what parameters they get, everything passes data through self/this, so whoever reads the code has to do extra detective work to figure out what fields were assigned before a function call. If you are lucky, fields are mostly used as inputs and not instead of returns. Sometimes you aren't lucky.
This is also fucked up because it necessitates much laxer types. Because you can't guarantee to the type checker that a field has been initialized, you have to mark everything as nullable, so now the reader of your code has to worry about null safety too. And of course you can't mark things as const/final.

This is not a rhetorical question, I want to know where #programming #education fucked up. And this is certainly not an issue exclusive to Python, I've also seen it in #Java code, but I don't read as much Java on a daily basis.

How do we prevent this mess?

If I had a dollar for every bug in #Python tooling I fixed this year by changing `if x is None:` to `if not x:`, I'd have two dollars, which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened twice.

"By any measure, the yuan lacks cachet. Though China is responsible for nearly a fifth of global economic activity, its tender is used in only 4% of international payments by value (compared with 50% for the dollar). Yuan assets make up just 2% of global central-bank currency reserves (compared with 58% for dollar assets). A lot of this mismatch can be blamed on China’s controls on money flowing in and out of the country. Many economists think that internationalising the yuan is impossible while they remain in place.

But even after America became the world’s largest economy, it still took decades for the dollar to achieve dominance. By that timescale, China is making surprisingly rapid progress. Its modest share of international payments has doubled since 2022. That is mostly thanks to changes at home. Increasing the yuan’s share in China’s own trade was an important step. Over 30% of China’s trade in goods and services is now done in its own currency (compared with 14% in 2019). It settles more than 50% of its total cross-border receipts (including financial flows) in yuan, up from less than 1% in 2010."

Speculation Is Swirling About The Future Of Turkiye’s S-400s

The stage is set for a grand deal between the US, Turkiye, Russia, and India, at least in theory and only tacitly in the case of the US-Russia, US-India, and Turkiye-India, but it remains to be seen whether it’ll materialize since American and Russian hardliners might torpedo any such arrangement.

Turkish media recently claimed that Russia offered to buy back their country’s S-400s that it received in 2019 in order to then resell them to other clients, which Turkiye is supposedly receptive to since it wants to end its spat with the US over this and is also developing a domestic analogue that can replace them. Polish media added that “Ankara still does not actively use them. They were never integrated into NATO, their missiles are already halfway through their shelf life, and maintenance costs pose a burden”.

Meanwhile, Indian media suggested that this deal could result in their country finally receiving its delayed S-400s, which would first have to be upgraded by Russia. While neither Russia nor Turkiye have confirmed this report, it’s sensible enough to be taken seriously for the time being at least. Russia can’t spare any S-400s from the front for export, Turkiye has since largely reconciled with the US and no longer needs the S-400s either, while India is eager to receive more of these systems as soon as possible.

Each corresponding party’s interests are more urgent than ever because: Russia needs to regain its rapidly declining role in the global arms market after most of its production has been redirected from export to the front since 2022; the new TRIPP Corridor creates the basis for a US-Turkish military-strategic partnership along Russia’s entire southern periphery so long as the S-400-related US sanctions are first lifted; and spring’s Indo-Pak clashes made air defence a renewed priority for Delhi.

The original goal behind Turkiye’s import of the S-400s is no longer relevant either. Back then, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan deeply distrusted the US due to its (at minimum indirect) role in summer 2016’s failed coup, hence why he agreed to this air defence deal a year later. Turkiye was also very displeased with direct US military support for Ankara-designated Kurdish terrorists in Syria. After TRIPP and Jolani’s/Sharaa’s rise to power, however, the aforesaid imperatives became outdated for the most part.

The stage is therefore set for a grand deal between the US, Turkiye, Russia, and India, at least in theory and only tacitly in the case of the US-Russia, US-India, and Turkiye-India, but it remains to be seen whether it’ll materialize. There are some forces that might torpedo it though, chiefly hardliners in the US and Russia, who might respectively object to the principle of a NATO ally selling military equipment back to Moscow and Russia buying back a weapons system that it sold to a NATO ally who now funds Ukraine.

Each side’s hardliners would therefore have to be sidelined in order for this deal to go through and it can’t be assumed that both Trump and Putin are able to do so in the current political conditions amidst escalating US-Russian tensions. Furthermore, the US is also taking a hard line against India nowadays led by Trump personally, which reduces the odds that it would agree to have Turkiye indirectly supply India with Russia’s S-400s after Trump just punitively tariffed India for continuing to buy Russian arms.

Accordingly, while the details of this proposed arrangement make perfect sense with respect to each side’s interests as explained, political factors vis-à-vis the calculations of American and Russian hardliners could ultimately ruin any possibility for such a deal. If the political will exists at each of those two’s highest levels, however, then it’s recommended that they encourage their media surrogates to articulate the inherent strategic benefits in order to help persuade the hardliners to reconsider their resistance.

You see a lot of stuff about how we are all so polarised and it is all social medias fault. The second half, at least, is nonsense. The fault lies with the mainstream. Once upon a time bone fide revolutionaries were household names. They were on TV and writing regularly in the mainstream press. My favourite example is Jean Genet, who in Sep 1977 defended the Baader-Meinhof in the pages of Le Monde. Now the BBC has a meltdown because Bob Vylan called for death to an army which is facilitating a genocide.

One result is that really quite normal political views seem extreme. The second is that establishment is much more extremist as it has no space for criticism, let alone deviance.

Another result, I think, is a hardening of views that are outside of the mainstream, which is to say almost all dissenting views, because their is no space for open debate, let alone polemic.

Some small tips for supporting #LGBTQ rigths and acceptance:

1. Listen and learn – You can amplify LGBTQ voices by sharing their stories, resources, and lived experiences.

2. Educate your circle – You can share reliable information and gently correct myths and false information.

3. Support LGBTQ and LGBTQ-friendly businesses – It's good idea to buy from, promote, and collaborate with LGBTQ‑owned and LGBTQ-friendly entrepreneurs and creators.

4. Use you platforms – You can use social media platforms to share stories, resources and use inclusive hashtags to promote positive narratives and voices.

You don't need to be a millionaire. Even something that you may see as too small to make an #impact will make a difference. #LGBT #socialmedia

SwiftUI is sometimes incredibly inefficient, especially when dealing with repeating animations. I’ve often had to drop down to Core Animation to reduce CPU usage from 50% to 0% (in my case, a shimmer effect with an animated gradient).

IMO this completely undermines the usefulness of these APIs. What’s the point of an API to animate a gradient if it’s so massively inefficient?

And no, I'm not holding it wrong. I also tried some Open Source Code on Github which all had the same issue

Когда вы последний раз заходили в профиль VK или «Одноклассников»? Кажется, здравомыслящие люди давно удалили эти профили, чтобы избежать слежки, потока поздравлений с каждым праздником и пр. Да и опасно в наше время «светить» свои лайки и комментарии в паблике. Соцсети умерли, а те, что осталось, похоже на ходячих мертвецов... А где кипит настоящая жизнь? Конечно, в групповых чатах мессенджеров! Словно возродились старые домовые сети. Воистину, история идёт по кругу.

"I don't know if they are still doing the restaurant evenings," I said, "I am not on #Facebook anymore"

I had ordered coffee and bought a carrot cake. The carrot cake was made at a nearby high school, by students in the Baker & confectioner class. The same school has a restaurant night every now and then for their chef and waiter students, but they only post the rather random opening days on Facebook.

I asked if the restaurant was still going, with not being on Facebook as the reason to ask.

"You know, that sounds like it must be wonderful!" - the barista answered. The pause between me saying "I am not on Facebook" to him saying not being on facebook must be a truely wonderful thing, was non-existent. He was not sarcastic.

He hate #Meta ... And a lot of people do... So much that when someone say they have left, the answer is instant... Rooted in "I wish I could"

I miss out on a lot of local stuff.

A lot of locally produced food I cannot order.

It SUCKS to be outside this.

But Facebook sucks more.
