The alternatives to Signal are #XMPP and #Matrix. Matrix has more features, but is buggier and involves tiptoeing around venture capital backed apps (which will turn bad eventually, and I already see the beginnings of enshitification). So if you are running Matrix prefer the community apps, like FluffyChat and Conduit, then you can avoid whatever future bullshit goes on with venture capital backed companies. XMPP tends to "just work" on anything, and afaik doesn't come with any corporate baggage.

I was born in the 1990s. I remember going to my grandparents' village in Bihar, India.
I used to lie on a wooden rope bed in the open air during nighttime, watching the stars in the sky, listening to stories from my grandfather while my grandmother was preparing delicious dinner.
