Cette publication, je la fais pour démystifier le plus simplement possible ce qu'est le Fédivers - pour que vous puissiez vous y situer, que vous soyez complètement nouveau ou que vous en ayez déjà entendu parler sans trop savoir c'est quoi. Installez-vous confortablement, on part en voyage.
Imaginez l'espace. Un univers vaste, composé de millions d'étoiles, de planètes, de continents et de villes. Vous choisissez où vous posez vos valises - mais peu importe où vous habitez, vous pouvez communiquer avec n'importe qui, partout dans cet univers. Personne ne possède l'espace. Aucun milliardaire capricieux ne peut le racheter un mardi matin et décider d'en changer les règles à sa guise. C'est exactement ça, le Fédivers.
Le mot lui-même est un mot-valise - "fédération" plus "univers". Un réseau de milliers de serveurs indépendants, gérés par des gens ordinaires comme vous et moi, qui se parlent entre eux grâce à un langage commun. Des milliers de communautés, des millions de personnes, zéro grand patron aux commandes.
Chaque serveur s'appelle une instance. C'est votre ville, votre point d'entrée dans cet univers. La mienne s'appelle OnJase.quebec. D'autres habitent qlub.social, mastodon.social, mamot.fr, ou des dizaines de milliers d'autres coins de cette galaxie francophone et internationale. Et la beauté là-dedans? Vous pouvez parler avec tout le monde, peu importe leur instance, peu importe leur coin de l'univers.
Votre adresse dans le Fédivers ressemble à ça: @vous@votreinstance.quelquechose - exactement comme un courriel, votre nom suivi du serveur où vous habitez. Simple, non?
Ce qui fait tenir tout ça ensemble s'appelle ActivityPub - le langage commun que tous ces serveurs utilisent pour se causer. C'est grâce à lui que votre compte Mastodon peut suivre quelqu'un sur Pixelfed qui partage des photos, sur PeerTube qui diffuse des vidéos, ou sur Funkwhale qui joue de la musique. Des plateformes complètement différentes qui se comprennent quand même. C'est comme si tous les réseaux sociaux de la planète parlaient enfin le même langage - sauf que là, personne n'en est propriétaire.
Quelques questions qu'on entend souvent:
Est-ce gratuit? Oui, la plupart du temps. Les instances sont gérées par des bénévoles qui paient l'hébergement de leur poche. Si vous pouvez vous le permettre, une petite donation à votre instance, c'est toujours apprécié et ça fait toute la différence.
Faut-il choisir la bonne instance dès le départ? Pas du tout. Si votre instance ne vous convient plus, vous déménagez - et vos abonnés déménagent avec vous. Pas de prise d'otage, pas de perte de contacts, pas de recommencement à zéro.

Et si quelqu'un voulait tout racheter comme Musk avec Twitter? Bonne chance. Pour contrôler le Fédivers, faudrait racheter des milliers de serveurs indépendants un par un, pendant que de nouveaux apparaissent tous les jours. c'est conçu pour ne jamais appartenir à personne - et c'est voulu.
Y a-t-il des règles? Ça dépend de chaque instance, mais en général: respectez les autres, légendez vos images pour les personnes malvoyantes, utilisez les hashtags pour être trouvé, et signalez ce qui cloche à vos administrateurs.
Pour voir l'étendue de cet univers d'un seul coup d'oeil, visitez fediverse.party - toutes les plateformes qui font partie du Fédivers sont là. Pas encore en français, ce qui fait légèrement chier, mais le visuel parle de lui-même.
Le Fédivers, c'est internet comme il aurait dû être depuis le début - libre, diversifié, appartenant à personne et à tout le monde à la fois.

A friend asked me for my shamir secret sharing code I wrote a while back and in reviewing it, I forgot that using Python's list comprehension (and operator overloading), the code is really simple. Basically 3 or 4 lines of code to create the shares and one line to recover the data.
Most of the code is the gf(2^8) class allowing it to use the standard math operators.

This morning I wanted to find a certain photo I took during the rain.
➡️ Opened up iPhoto and typed "Rain." It spit out a bunch of useless results (like 1800 "Rainforest" images which were basically every forest photo I've ever taken, most in clear weather) or text results for the word.
➡️ Opened Immich and typed "Rain." Tons of photos AND videos. Found what I wanted! It wasn't super accurate but it produced results!

I built another thing!
This time I was attempting to make nice themed #markdown slides. I wanted them to look the same on Mac,Windows and Linux hence choosing markdown and not doing a keynote/pptx conversion. But there isn't a nice editor for #marp that I could find that worked on all platforms, so I wrote one! It can be installed via npm.
