I always ask similar questions like the following,
What will you do when you discover that the kernel of your favorite Operating System now gets programming assistance in any form of a power guzzling ocean warming large language model?
Will will you fork the kernel yourself? Do you have the programming capability
There are a lot of folk who are pissed off at Linus Torvalds, for allowing some of his maintainers to use large language models to assist in finding bugs.
The Head Programmer of the fantastic and Beautiful curl also uses a large language model in some form, to hunt for bugs, because both he and Greg from the Linux kernel, saw that the LLM used on GitHub is now suddenly much better at finding those pesky bugs.
Mind you, the only LLM I like is the one that runs locally on my low powered Android phone. That's a micro LLM

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) just inked a $12.2 million contract for an artificial intelligence tool that claims to map out immigrants’ daily routines, habits, and real-time location and categorize them as potential threats, per procurement records reviewed by the Lever.
Dubbed “Project SAFE HAVEN,” the product is advertised by defense vendor Edge Ops LLC as a “question-based AI interface” that uses “persistent passive data collection” to map “patterns of life,” a surveillance tactic that ICE says will identify the “habitual locations, routes, and behavioral patterns” of its targets.
Additional features of the technology described in procurement documents include real-time location tracking and analysis that will categorize individuals and groups as affiliated with ostensible criminal organizations, such as gangs or cartels. That includes building “target profiles” that track individuals’ activity by linking data obtained from Wi-Fi network connections and mobile smart devices, such as cell phones and smartwatches.
A promotional blurb for the tool on Edge Ops LLC’s website claims that Project SAFE HAVEN “transforms the way we identify, locate, and map illegal migrants.”"

"The US federal government’s central energy information agency is planning to implement a mandatory nationwide survey of data centers focused on their energy use, according to a letter seen by WIRED. This survey would be the first effort of its type to collect basic information about data centers.
The letter was sent to senators Elizabeth Warren and Josh Hawley on April 9 by the head of the Energy Information Administration, Tristan Abbey, and comes in response to a previous inquiry from the senators about the EIA’s plans to get more information about data centers. WIRED reported on Hawley and Warren’s letter last month.
"Americans deserve to know how much energy data centers are sucking up and what that's doing to their utility bills,” Warren told WIRED in a statement. “The EIA's mandatory survey is an important first step towards holding data centers accountable, but people are hurting right now. I'm pushing EIA to collect and share this data as soon as possible."

I learned a thing. I'm messing around with a way of showing height of an aircraft without just reading the numbers. Lower the cognitive barrier for someone using the map. I tried drop shadows that change based on altitude but they read very poorly over the map so I'm scrapping that idea. I don't want to use color as I want high threat targets to be color coded for traffic alert info when flying. So these leaves perhaps shape / size to play with.
Here is a picture of the map with drop shadows. Not great. I'm not much of a designer but I'll prototype some things and see what reads best.

For example, take this list:

Moving "lemons" to the end is easy when there's a trailing comma: just cut and paste.

RubyGems.org published its first public roadmap this week. That’s new, and it’s worth noticing.
I’ve written about Ruby Central governance before, and about choosing to contribute anyway. One of the things that frustrated me most wasn’t any specific decision, it was that plans were hard to follow unless you were already plugged in. The closest thing to a public roadmap were the “State of RubyGems” talks at RubyConf: the 2023 San Diego talk by Samuel Giddins, then Security Engineer in Residence at Ruby Central, and the 2024 Chicago talk by Giddins, Marty Haught, and Martin Emde. Both were excellent, but once a year and after decisions were already in motion.
A public roadmap doesn’t fix governance. But it does something important: it makes the work legible year-round.
What’s Actually on the Roadmap
The announcement points to a GitHub project board with initiatives at various stages. A few things stood out:
Organizations moving toward general availability. This was in private beta as of the January newsletter and is clearly on the path to shipping. If you’ve dealt with gem ownership transfers, multi-maintainer coordination, or what happens when the one person with push access leaves a company, this is the feature that addresses it.
Native gem improvements. This involves both the RubyGems client team and contributors from Shopify. Native gems have been a persistent rough edge, particularly for anyone managing platform-specific builds in CI. Seeing it on the roadmap explicitly is good.
Gem archival and security tooling. Both are listed as longer-term work. I have a lot of thoughts about gem archival specifically, but I’ll save those for another post.
Why Transparency Matters for Infrastructure
Most software projects you depend on have some kind of public communication: a changelog, a GitHub issues list, a blog. But registries are different. RubyGems.org isn’t a gem you pin in your Gemfile and upgrade when you’re ready. It’s the substrate. Changes to how it works, what it accepts, what policies it enforces. Those decisions ripple out to every Ruby developer and every tool in the ecosystem, whether or not they’re paying attention.
The GitHub project board isn’t just a communication tool, either. The announcement specifically invites people to comment on existing issues or file new ones if they see something missing. That’s participation, not just broadcast.
What I’m Optimistic About
After the RubyGems fracture last fall (the departure of Samuel Giddins and André Arko, the revoked access, the walkout), I wasn’t sure what to expect from Ruby Central heading into this year. A public roadmap with real items, tied to a public issue tracker where people can actually engage, is not nothing.
It’s easy to take for granted if you’re used to it from other projects, but for RubyGems.org, this is new. Moving in the right direction counts for something.
I’m looking forward to watching the Organizations feature ship, and to seeing how the community ends up shaping what comes next.
