I did a bit of light digging out of personal curiosity;
mastodon.cloud ownership trail:
Originally run by a Japanese operator who announced shutdown in May 2020 over anticipated defamation law compliance burdens. Both mastodon.cloud (~59k users) and mstdn.jp (~200k users) were transferred on July 1 2020 to Sujitech LLC (USA), a two-person company led by Suji Yan; UIUC dropout, founder of Mask Network (Web3/crypto decentralised social protocol).
Suji Yan's own mastodon.cloud profile: 10 posts. 58 followers. That's your active admin (!)
Corporate structure is layered: Sujitech sits under Dimension.im, Yan is also Chairman of "The Social Coop Limited" (unrelated to social.coop), Mask Network's venture arm Bonfire Union claims $100M across 120 projects. In late 2022 they also acquired Pawoo.net. In Nov 2023 Sujitech donated $100K to Mastodon; reportedly the largest single donation, which buys a lot of legitimacy narrative while the instances they actually run go unmoderated.
As early as late 2020, observers noted the team was too busy with Mask Network to allocate real resources to mstdn.jp or mastodon.cloud. The Feb 2024 spam wave exposed just how many large instances with open registrations were effectively abandoned, mastodon.cloud fits this pattern precisely.
The play: maintain big-name legacy instances as credibility tokens ("we operate major Mastodon infrastructure!") while chasing Lens protocol stewardship and Web3 deals. Instance governance is a line item in a pitch deck, not an operational commitment.

It took only 572 posts and 45 MB of photos to convince the users of Mastodon.cloud that now was a good time to leave.
My bot did most of the work, and it was so successful that even the bots have left (there are only 4 left).
I would wait one week (7 days) before completely de-federating Mastodon.cloud, because there are always some stragglers whenever a community falls into ruin — but that’s just my opinion.
The bot will continue its task until it reaches 2,000 posts.

And after repeatedly telling that I'm moving away, almost noone followed. It was the same when I left Twitter.
