I was walking my two dogs today when a white cat fell from a 6-story building, landing on the pavement just a meter away from me. She miraculously landed on her paws but was completely terrified. People just kept walking by. Within five minutes, I realized I was the only one left who could help her. I've become the only who knew what happened.
Spontaneous interaction with strangers is usually a huge struggle for me. But leaving a shocked animal near traffic with a heavy thunderstorm approaching just wasn't an option.
The urgency of the situation somehow bypassed my anxiety. I just had to swallow my panic and do something.
I looked up at the building and noticed only one open window on the top floor. I assumed that's where she fell from.
The intercom was broken, and I wasn't even sure I was buzzing the right apartment. I honestly had no idea what I was going to say. With no other options, I stood there with my dogs, guarding the cat, and kept staring at that open window hoping someone would look out.
Eventually, a man did. I waved and asked if he was missing a white cat. He looked confused - as far as I know cats are quiet, and probably he hadn't even noticed she was gone. But when I told him she was hiding right around the corner, he rushed downstairs.
From the fall to the reunion, the whole thing took about 15 minutes. I am strictly a dog person with almost zero cat experience, but I know I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight if I had just walked away knowing I could have helped.
I really hope the brave little survivor is okay now. Photo attached.
