I've been reading a critique of pragmatism as opposed to dogmatism. It's interesting how arguments put forward make sense in #freesoftware vs #OpenSource debate.
The argument is that pragmatism has wide appeal at the cost of ever changing foundation that can result in paradoxes such as big corporate embrace of OSS only to tighten the grip on its users even more. On the other side you have strong dogmatic principles that are hard to subvert but that can lead to fanatism.

Fuck Zuck!
Zuckerberg didn't create FaceBook. He stole code from the Winklevoss twins.
Zuckerberg sold out FaceBook user's data to Cambridge Analytica. Then appeared like a contrite schoolboy, before congress, saying, "Ooops! I didn't mean to accidentally cut Billion dollar deals to sell out FaceBook users, and influence the US elections in favor of Trump. Honest mistake! Won't do it again ( unless the money is right ).
All said and done, after the whole being caught red-handed and tried, and all the crocodile tears he cried, Zuckerberg still came out financially ahead on this corrupt deal.
Did his ethics change? Probably not. Meta is just more clever about being caught.
I have so many products from FaceBook, that were total scams. I ordered an electric lighter that was supposedly based on Tesla coil technology, and could charge from a USB port, and never needed any fuel. I got a cheap Chinese butane lighter. Zuckerberg's ethics didn't change.

This brought back so many memories. #Quake3 and #UT99 were a huge part of my life back then, genuinely good times.
Now #gameplay footage from #Quake4: The Awakening has surfaced on #YouTube, an expansion that was cancelled after only ten months of development. The footage shows early environments, experimental mechanics and content that was clearly never finished.
Mostly documentary value, but still a fascinating look at what could have been.
Apparently some elements like the Dead Zone #multiplayer mode actually made it into the 1.3 update back then.

I tested a setup that moves IBM Bob off the laptop and into a remote Linux workspace over SSH.
The interesting part was not the happy path. It was all the little things around it: SSH keys, host aliases, locked accounts, amd64 vs arm64, and how Bob actually starts its remote server.

Digitaler Wochenrückblick 19. April 2026 (Spätausgabe)
Wer kennt sie nicht, die Kingeltöne im Abo, gar nicht so billig auf Dauer und völlig überflüssig. Davon möchte sich WhatsApp eine dicke Scheibe abschneiden. Ganz sanft beginnt es demnächst mit „WhatsApp plus“, kostet nur 2,49 Euro im Monat. Das können sich auch die Kleinen in der Grundschule vom Taschengeld locker leisten. Die fisseln sowieso gerne daran rum, erkunden die digitalen Niederungen im Alleingang. Sie werden mit der bezahlten Version so viel Spaß haben, wie wir damals, als wir noch alle Zähne hatten und die Klingeltöne ausprobieren mussten.
Mal ehrlich, wir haben davon doch keinen Schaden davon getragen? Jedenfalls die große Mehrheit nicht, der Rest zahlt wahrscheinlich heute noch das Abo. Ähnlich der Klingeltöne gibt es verschiedene Nachrichtentöne, mit satten 18 Farbtönen kann ich mein WhatsApp selbst gestalten und auch bei den Icons lassen sich 14 unterschiedliche Designs anlegen, das ist aber noch nicht alles, es gibt exklusive Preimium-Sticker und – wie könnte es anders sein: verschiedene Klingeltöne. Wann es nach Europa kommt? Nur eine Frage der Zeit, wer mehr wissen will, kann seine Neugier auf dieser Seite befriedigen.
Zu Beruhigung sei noch erwähnt, dass das ganze Gezuppel nicht für das iPhone angeboten wird, jedenfalls noch nicht.
Im Kern soll WhatsApp natürlich kostenlos bleiben, ein wahres Geschenk des Meta-Konzerns an die Menschen der Welt, so völlig uneigennützig.
WhatsApp bietet sogar kostenlos die Möglichkeit, die aktuellen Standortdaten an Freude und Fremde zu versenden. Sehr praktisch, wer im Wald Verstecken spielt und den Weg nicht zurückfindet. Wer das macht, oder wie Du jetzt, nur von dieser Möglichkeit erfährt, der- oder diejenige müsste sofort die Fragen stellen:
„Wenn ich das so einfach teilen kann, was macht denn WhatsApp noch alles mit den Standortdaten?“
Um technische Fragen vorab zu beantworten: Nein, die Standortdaten werden nicht nur erfasst, wenn ich sie teilen möchte – sondern immer!
Privatsphäre haben wir per se aufgegeben, die Welt spaltet sich in zwei Lager: die, die es nutzen, weil es funktioniert und die, die es nicht nutzen, aber haben, weil es da ist und damit leben. Unterm Strich eine Win-Win-Situation für Meta.
Aber auch Meta neigt mit WhatsApp zu Innovationen! Noch in diesem Jahr möchten sie in Europa damit beginnen Werbung einzuspielen, zu unserem Nutzen. Wir haben uns so weit gedankenlos prostituiert, dass Meta die Möglichkeit sieht, die Angebote zielgruppenspezifisch auch über WhatsApp auszuspielen. Ob wir bei „WhatsApp plus“ auf diese Funktion verzichten müssen, ist noch nicht geklärt.
Es spielt übrigens keine Rolle, die Werbung zu sehen oder nicht, alle Daten – also nicht nur die Standortdaten – bekommen bei der WhatsApp-Mutter Meta eine produktive Heimat. Sie wissen schließlich nicht nur wo ich bin, sondern auch, mit wem ich mich rumtreibe, welche Kontakte ich aktiv nutze, was mich interessiert, welche politische Einstellung ich habe, ob ich rauche oder schwanger bin, was ich mir so leiste und wo ich wohne (dazu muss ich noch nicht mal meine Adresse hinterlegen, überflüssig.)
Der hauseigene KI-Assistent „Meta AI“ gibt nicht nur den Chats einen gewissen neuen Charme, sondern lernt auch fleißig dazu. Kein Wunder, dass Meta andere Chatbots bei WhatsApp fernhalten möchte.
Mit wie viel Liebe zum Detail WhatsApp auch den Nachwuchs fördert, hatten wir hier besprochen. Mit einem Kinderkonto möchten sie der Altersverifikation zuvor kommen. Mithilfe der Eltern wird der Braten angerichtet.
Kinder im Umgang mit WhatsApp zu schulen, ist förderlich für deren Zukunft, wenn sie morgens um Bus sitzen und anderen mitteilen können: „Ich habe heute keinen Bock auf Mathe“ und je nach Klassenstärke bis zu 35 Antworten gleichen Inhaltes bekommen.
Selbst der WDR schreckt vor nichts zurück, für die Lokalzeit gibt es als WhatsApp-Kanal „Infos und Geschichten aus Köln und Bonn“
Klar, die Reichweite, damit möchte der WDR punkten und wenn Oma das nicht drauf hat, kann der Enkel im Grundschulalter ihr das auf WhatsApp anrichten.
Nur: wenn wir den ÖRR für sein Programm bezahlen, dann bleibt die Frage, warum es nur ein Informationsangebot über einen Konzern aus Nordamerika gibt und alljene, die – aus guten Grund – kein WhatsApp benutzen, ausgesperrt bleiben.
Und: Was hat der WDR davon, dass Meta in seinen Datenstrom aufnehmen kann, wer dieses Programm verfolgt?
Der WDR schreibt: „Werde jetzt Teil unserer Community. Wir wünschen dir viel Spaß.“ – gemeint ist wohl nur die WhatsApp-Community. Stellt sich die Frage, ob LGBTQ zum Schutz von Minderheiten und gendergerechter Sprache, um die Aussätzigen ohne WhatsApp ergänzt werden muss, so es dann LGBTQ-W heißen muss? Wird nicht funktionieren, denn die LGBTQ-ler tauschen sich fleißig über WhatsApp aus, so etwas abartig, abnormes, wie WhatsApp-Verweigerer werden sie nicht in ihrem Kreis dulden – obwohl, ein WhatsApp-Verweigerer (oder Verweigerin) auch von einer heternormativen Norm abweicht.
Wer ein neues Smartphone aus dem Karton pusselt, der muss fast nichts mehr machen, entweder WhatsApp ist schon drauf oder kommt gleich um die Ecke, es ist da, funktioniert und wird benutzt.
Unterm Strich, wäre es hilfreich, die Frage zu stellen: „Tut das denn Not, dass jeder Idiot das haben muss?“
Wenn Du, liebe Leserin oder Leser, Dich auch so fühlst, also nicht als Idiot, dann machs doch weg! Gibt keine Flecken, riecht nicht und ist sogar selbstreinigend.
