"Immigration and Customs Enforcement is using spyware tools that can intercept encrypted messages as part of the agency's efforts to disrupt fentanyl traffickers, according to a letter sent last week by the agency's acting director, Todd Lyons.
Lyons' letter, which was reviewed by NPR, said ICE's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is using various tools as part of its mission to disrupt and dismantle foreign terrorist organizations, "particularly those involved in the trafficking of fentanyl."
Lyons wrote that "in response to the unprecedented lethality of fentanyl and the exploitation of digital platforms by transnational criminal organizations," he approved HSI's "use of cutting-edge technological tools that address the specific challenges posed by the Foreign Terrorist Organizations' thriving exploitation of encrypted communication platforms."
His letter, dated April 1, was a belated response to an October inquiry from three Democratic members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform expressing concern about the agency's potential use of the spyware Graphite, which was created by an Israeli company, Paragon Solutions."

German citizens know that they have to take lesser financial support from the government into account
if they want to proudly present themselves as belonging to a nation that commands Europe's biggest and strongest armed forces.
And who doesn't like to indulge in the heroism of being respected an actor who can shove other states around due to its ability to project military power world wide?
Germans in their majority happily agree to live a more modest life if only the nation can succeed on the battlefield. And those who oppose striving to national greatness and putting the Bundeswehr above all other European armies - who by the way once celebrated victory over Nazi Germany - are just traitors to the nation and should be treated as such.
Good old times are here again as Prussian virtues are in high regard once more - this time surely achieving what has failed in the last attempts to reach hegemony over Deutsch-Europa.

The documents reveal for the first time how the AI program was pitched to government employees and trained to target certain regulations to boost President Donald Trump’s pro-business deregulation agenda.
According to the records, “SweetREX,” an AI tool developed by a Musk acolyte, was programmed to identify and eliminate rules that imposed costs on private enterprises, limited business innovation, or used race-based classifications, among other criteria. Using such parameters for guidance, the program could also process more than a hundred thousand public comments in less than half an hour.
“The documents reveal, for the first time, the shortcuts this AI tool takes when deciding whether a regulation is legally required and whether its burdens outweigh benefits to the public,” said Daniel McGrath, senior oversight counsel at the legal advocacy group Democracy Forward, which obtained the records through a Freedom of Information Act request."

"In the history of state-sponsored hacking, the spectrum of cyber operations bent on sabotage have ranged from crude “wiper” attacks that destroy data on target computers to the legendary Stuxnet, a piece of malware the US and Israel first deployed in Iran in 2007 to silently accelerate the spinning of nuclear enrichment centrifuges until they destroyed themselves. Now researchers have discovered another chapter in that decades-long evolution of cybersabotage techniques: a 21-year-old specimen of malware capable of tampering with research and engineering software to undetectably sow mayhem—one that may have been used in Iran, even before Stuxnet.
Vitaly Kamluk and Juan Andrés Guerrero-Saade, two researchers from the cybersecurity firm SentinelOne, on Thursday revealed a breakthrough in the mystery of a piece of malware known as Fast16, a piece of code whose purpose has eluded the cybersecurity world since its existence was first revealed in an NSA leak in 2017. The SentinelOne researchers have now reverse-engineered the Fast16 code, which they say dates back to 2005 and was likely created by either the US government or one of its allies.
Kamluk and Guerrero-Saade have determined that the Fast16 malware was designed to carry out the most subtle form of sabotage ever seen in an in-the-wild malware tool: By automatically spreading across networks and then silently manipulating computation processes in certain software applications that perform high-precision mathematical calculations and simulate physical phenomena, Fast16 can alter the results of those programs to cause failures that range from faulty research results to catastrophic damage to real-world equipment."
