Desde una perspectiva psicológica, la elección entre software privativo y código abierto trasciende la funcionalidad para adentrarse en la salud mental de los usuarios y desarrolladores. El software privativo suele operar bajo un modelo de caja negra que genera en el individuo una sensación de indefensión aprendida; al no comprender ni poder modificar las herramientas que rigen su vida digital, el usuario experimenta una pérdida de autonomía y una dependencia forzada que puede derivar en frustración y desconfianza. Por el contrario, el software de código abierto y colaborativo activa el sentido de autoeficacia y pertenencia. Al permitir que cualquiera examine, modifique y mejore el código, se fomenta un entorno de transparencia que reduce la ansiedad relacionada con la privacidad y el control de datos. Este modelo promueve la motivación intrínseca, ya que los colaboradores no trabajan bajo la presión de un beneficio económico externo, sino impulsados por el deseo de autorrealización y el apoyo mutuo. La estructura de instancias en Mastodon y el Fediverso responde a una necesidad psicológica básica: el sentido de pertenencia. Mientras que las redes centralizadas fomentan una identidad global y a menudo despersonalizada, las instancias operan bajo la psicología de las microcomunidades. Según la Teoría de la Identidad Social, los seres humanos nos sentimos más seguros y validados en grupos donde las normas son claras y compartidas. Al elegir una instancia, el usuario realiza un ejercicio de autodeterminación; busca un espacio que funcione como un refugio cognitivo donde el ruido se reduce y la relevancia aumenta. Este modelo disminuye la fatiga por sobreestimulación y refuerza el compromiso, ya que el individuo no siente que le habla al vacío, sino a un colectivo, a "su tribu", con el que se identifica activamente. Es, en esencia, devolverle a internet la escala humana que la hiperconectividad nos había arrebatado.

#ATProto has the advantage of its prudent protocol development approach, and that it could 'stand on the shoulders of giants' to apply lessons-learned from the past. The luxury position of a tight team of protocol developers unbound by a formal design-by-consensus process in a greenfield environment, and with due attention paid to protocol robustness and quality of specifications makes ATProto an attractive choice. Most importantly the protocol does not leave gaping misconceptions unaddressed.
ATProto is not the opposite of working at standard level, but rather an exemplar of it. But that depends how you look at it. As a solution developer you do not have to care about the protocol intrinsics, and just get exposed to solid API's and intuitive #design concepts the protocol already specified and dictated to #protocol implementers.
#GrassrootsStandards do the same for fedi.
