Social networks are people and their connections. Yet the platforms that host those connections have concentrated power, stripped APIs, and optimized feeds for addiction rather than relationship. Quitting doesn’t work because Metcalfe’s Law keeps you tied to where your friends are; new monolithic alternatives can’t overcome that gravity either. ActivityPub’s answer is meaningful choice: different business models, local ownership, open APIs, and algorithms that serve you, reached by developers building, users participating, media co-publishing, and policymakers mandating interoperability.

The more I ponder it the more I feel like banning social media for minors is simply capitulation to large tech. Instead of regulating those companies and their products, we are discriminating against a vulnerable minority.
Social media is allegedly worse for your health than smoking. But dissuading use through banning youth access now is both hypocrisy and might simply lead to a less digitally capable and media savvy generation.
It's also a feeble action in itself and will be difficult to enforce (with means of verification) or monitor (by requiring governments). Companies will resist reporting and there are workarounds and alternatives young people will leverage.
Further, enforcing age restrictions and verifiable digital identity seems more like a smokescreen for introducing privacy compromising identity systems that at this point seem most likely to favour the further entrenchment of large technology companies like Google, Apple and Microsoft.

Der Frühling ist da und der Schnee schmilzt langsam weg. So kommen nun auch langsam die ersten tiefen Gipfel (bis 2200m) wieder zum Vorschein. So stieg ich heute von der Sonnenseite her durch das Graaggetor auf den Hardergrat, alles ohne Schnee. Auf der Rückseite des Grats gab es aber noch viel Schnee, weshalb ich auch weitere Experimente verzichtet habe und die einfache Abstiegsvariante gewählt habe.
Spring is here and the snow is slowly melting away. As a result, the first lower peaks (up to 2,200 m) are gradually coming back into focus. So today I climbed up to the Hardergrat from the sunny side via the Graaggetor, all without any snow. However, there was still a lot of snow on the back side of the ridge, which is why I decided against further experimentation and chose the easier descent route.
