"Since Iran choked off the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route through the Gulf, attention has centred on the risk to oil flows.
The threat to food security, however, may be just as grave a risk. “You can live without your fridge or without your car for a while,” says Michael Werz, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. “You cannot live if you do not have food staples.”
The impact on the global food system caused by the Iran war could be even bigger than the crisis triggered by Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, experts say.
That is a particularly serious concern for the world’s poorer countries, but the longer the conflict lasts, the more severe the food shock will become and the more people will be affected.
The initial disruption four years ago was concentrated in Black Sea grain exports before rippling out to energy and fertiliser markets. This time it is hitting several parts of the system at once.
The Gulf is at the heart of global fertiliser markets. Its production has been halted and shipments disrupted, curtailing supplies and driving up global prices.
Many other countries also depend on gas from the region to manufacture fertiliser.
Higher fuel and electricity prices are already pushing up the cost of moving, processing and cooking food."

Несколько дней к ряду я занимался реставрацией легаси модели ai-forever/rugpt3xl , это классическая языковая модель от SberDevices на 1.3B параметров, крошка по современным меркам, на которой сберовцы обкатывали свои научные наработки аж в далёком 2021м году. Подробнее о ней можно почитать в статье “A family of pretrained transformer language models for Russian” на Google Scholar. Да, она foundation, то есть умеет только продолжать текст, не может выполнять инструкции или работать в режиме чата. Но обучена она на корпусе русского языка и этот самый русский генерит очень бодро. У неё есть две примечательные особенности: её обучали с нуля, архитектура представляет собой глубокую модификацию GPT-2.

When the Supreme Court stepped in and refused the right to have a recount, that was the first time I felt something was wrong with this country. You didn’t even need to vote in that election to feel something was wrong.
Citizens United should never have been approved by the Supreme Court.
Money should not entitle you to more rights, nor should a faceless corporation be viewed as a human being. That was another moment when I knew something was wrong. We basically failed common sense.
Bernie Sanders would be our President if the DNC did not ignore the voting population. It was broadcast on live TV and reuploaded to YouTube, where many Americans watched in disbelief as the opinion of the chair ignored the vote and said Hillary Clinton needed her turn, as if the presidency were an inheritance. They later even argued in court that, as a private party, they could choose whomever they wanted and that the primaries were only ever a formality.
Once more, now in his second election, Bernie Sanders should have won. Even The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Time magazine were asking, “Were we ready for a socialist?” and predicting he would win, only for the DNC to have a bunch of people jump into the race and endorse the last-place candidate, whose campaign had won nothing and was near bankruptcy: Joe Biden. I have never seen anyone endorse the last-place candidate except in that election.
Joe Biden was always going to lose a second term. He had only been forced upon us and put up with because people had had enough of Donald Trump’s first term. But the old man, along with the DNC, held onto Joe Biden running well past the primaries and did a surprise switch to Kamala Harris for the general election. Kamala Harris, who was so unpopular that she had dropped out of the primaries four years prior before anyone voted, was, of course, going to lose. The Pikachu face of surprise afterward was just sad.
The United States has a problem — many of them, actually. How our leaders are selected is one of them.

Today I was really struggling with the missing support for any type of refactoring in the built-in editor for gdscript - search & replace doesn't count.
And the fact that you cannot move the debugger into a separate window (these value fields are so so small).
I ended up installing Rider. Which has a semi-working rename refactor for gdscript but a well working debugger and inspector. Hot reload works as well.
I hope this PR [1] makes it.

This article gives a good explanation of problems people are finding with AI chatbots. It observes that over the last six months, there's been an increase in researchers noticing LLM chatbots doing the following:
- Evading safeguards
- Destroying emails and other files without permission
- Lying and cheating
- Deceptive scheming
- Disregarding direct instructions
- Consent violation
- Bypassing security controls
- Revenge-shaming people
- Using false concern for people with disabilities as a shield for illegal or unethical activities
- Giving insincere apologies
I'm glad researchers are putting serious work into this aspect of LLMs, publishing their concerns, and trying to educate the public. That said, I'd argue that factors such as those listed above have always been a problem with LLMs, and that they're intrinsic to LLM technology.
Furthermore, I think the key changes in the last six months should not be interpreted as a result of LLMs having made a leap in "intelligence" or a maturation of LLM technology. A simpler and more plausible explanation is that people have been giving LLMs more access to systems and data, people have increased their trust in AI chatbots, and they've given LLMs more opportunities to do harm. The pattern with these problems is they're failings of people, not advances by LLMs. The increased notice of harms in recent months comes from increased scrutiny and the accumulation of evidence.
It's also worth noting that the behaviours being attributed to LLMs are not entirely accidental. Like any features of computer software, they are there by design. They were built-in as the result of decisions made by the programmers. The "LGTM, ship it!" mindset sets a company culture of inadequate testing and not fixing problems before release.
Problems with LLMs are a reflection of the makers of LLMs, senior managers in LLM companies, owners of LLM companies, and people who downplay or ignore problems with LLMs. The list of problems with LLMs that I summarised above from the article is a reflection of personality-flaws of AI TechBros.
