"On March 20, members of the ProPublica Guild, one of the largest nonprofit newsroom unions in the U.S., overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike. Out of the roughly 150 journalists, copyeditors, videographers and other newsroom workers in the Guild, 92% of members voted to walk off the job if ProPublica doesn’t agree to their contract terms in the coming weeks.
The vote comes two and a half years into negotiations over the Guild’s first collective bargaining agreement, which started soon after the union was recognized back in August 2023.
One of the sticking points at the bargaining table has been an article that would prohibit ProPublica from laying off employees due to AI adoption. Alongside the dispute over AI, the Guild is also pushing for “just cause” when firing unit members, a provision that would give senior employees more job security during layoffs, and cost-of-living wage increases.
The Guild’s vote marks the first time a major U.S. newsroom has authorized a strike, at least in part, over AI protections."

"Earlier this month, a second major wealth tax proposal was introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ro Khanna, both of whom have been vocal supporters of the California initiative. The more aggressive Sanders-Khanna proposal calls for a 5 percent annual wealth tax on the country’s approximately 950 billionaires, which they project would raise up to $4.4 trillion over the next decade. In their bill, that revenue would go toward funding half a dozen policy measures, including a $3,000 direct payment to every American in households earning under $150,000 and the complete reversal of Republican cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
So far, the public response to a billionaire tax has been largely positive. Early polling indicates that most Californians support the wealth tax, which currently has the best shot at becoming a reality. Last month, a survey from the Republican-leaning pollster Nestpoint found that 60 percent currently back the proposal, while just 24 percent oppose it. Even when respondents were given opposition messaging, 54 percent continued to favor the proposition.
Not surprisingly, most of California’s billionaires have reacted to the ballot initiative with alarm bordering on panic, denouncing it as “asset seizure” and threatening to leave the state. Billionaire-backed business groups have already launched their campaign to defeat the proposal, with tech oligarchs like Peter Thiel and Google cofounder Sergey Brin chipping in millions to fund the effort. If past campaigns are any indication, the opposition is likely to spend tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars more to defeat the proposal if it gains the necessary signatures to appear on the ballot in November."

The new server rack is almost alive! 🔋
It features multiple Raspberry Pis running Podman containers, a dedicated backup server, and plenty of storage — basically a self-hosted powerhouse. 🗂️
The custom PC frame at the bottom started as an OpenFrame case and now fits perfectly in the shallow rack. 🖥️
Just a few parts left… can’t wait to see it fully operational. ⚙️

"Perhaps the clearest examples are advanced memory and training chips, which are among the most important—and are by far the most expensive—components of training any AI model. Currently, most of them are produced by two companies in South Korea and one in Taiwan. These countries, in turn, get a large majority of their crude oil and much of their liquefied natural gas—which help fuel semiconductor manufacturing—from the Persian Gulf. The chip companies also require helium, sulfur, and bromine—three key inputs to silicon wafers—largely sourced from the region. In addition, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and other regional petrostates have become key investors in the American AI firms that purchase most of those chips.
Because of the war in Iran, the Strait of Hormuz is functionally closed to most shipping vessels, stranding one-fifth of the world’s exports of natural gas, one-third of the world’s exports of crude oil, and significant quantities of the planet’s exportable fertilizer, helium, and sulfur. Meanwhile, Iran and Israel have begun bombing much of the fossil-fuel infrastructure in the region, which could take many years to replace. In only a month of war, the price of Brent crude—a global oil benchmark—has jumped by 40 percent and could more than double, liquefied-natural-gas prices are soaring in Europe and Asia, and helium spot prices have already doubled. The strait is “critical to basically every aspect of the global economy,” Sam Winter-Levy, a technology and national-security researcher at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told us. “The AI supply chain is not insulated.”
The situation could quickly deteriorate from here. A helium crunch could trigger a shortage of AI chips or cause chip prices to rise."

Working on extending features for Warlock, and this round of features requires a backend web service running in a centralized, controlled environment due to the requirement of privileged access to partner network resources, (aka, they require an API key and prior authorization to access certain data, thus cannot be distributed in an open source project).
SO, since this is a traditional web service, I opted to use the traditional technologies to power it, but wanted to try out Symfony since it makes use of a lot of the new PHP 8.* features. Been a few years since I seriously used PHP though, so I'm a little out of date on its stack.
Thus far though..... not real impressed with it. The auto routing is convenient (despite being implemented rather ungracefully), but this dependency injecting is a little wonky. Recommending that object constructors use dependency injection from yaml service files, useful in theory, but you can't just do
$lookup = new GameModProviderNameApi($apiKey);
Because that API key is loaded from the service handler...
I dunno, maybe I'm just old school and maybe I just need to get used to the way Symfony is doing things, but all this auto-plumbing just seems unnecessarily complicated and obscure.
