Built a receipt scanner with Python OCR and it turned into a full finance toolkit.
5 modules: receipt scanning, portfolio tracking, report generation, job tracking, subscription auditing.
The OCR is about 90% accurate on real receipts. Image preprocessing (deskew, contrast, noise reduction) was the key.

Foreign Residents In Japan Exceed 4 Million
The total number of foreigners living in Japan has exceeded four million (as of 2025) based on the official numbers released by the government, according to a Kyodo News report.

The number of foreign nationals residing in Japan hit a record 4.13 million in 2025, topping 4 million for the first time, aided by a rise in permanent residents and foreign workers, government data showed Friday.
According to the Immigration Services Agency, 4,125,395 foreign nationals were residing in Japan at the end of 2025, up 9.5 percent from the previous year, hitting a record high for the fourth consecutive year.
They accounted for 3.36 percent of the country’s population, up from 3.04 percent last year. Around 947,000 were permanent residents, while 475,000 were holders of visas in specialized work fields such as engineering or the humanities.
By nationality, Chinese topped the list of foreign residents in Japan at 930,000. Vietnamese came second at around 681,000, followed by South Koreans at around 407,000.
Japan also had around 356,000 Filipinos and around 300,000 Nepalese. Sri Lankans, at around 79,000, ranked ninth, up from 12th place in 2024.
Known for its strict immigration policy, Japan has been gradually opening its doors to foreign workers in recent years as the country faces labor shortages due to the aging of society.
Its refugee recognition system is also seen as stringent. The agency announced that 187 foreigners were recognized as refugees last year, down 3 from the year before. The total includes 123 Afghans, 26 Yemenis and 11 Chinese.
Japan accepted a total of 474 people, mostly Ukrainians, under what is known as the complementary protection system that treats those fleeing conflict as equivalent to refugees. The number fell sharply, by 1,187 from 2024.
The government granted residential status to 525 people on humanitarian grounds.
The number of foreign nationals applying for refugee status dropped 8.7 percent to around 11,000. The figure has been on a downward trend since the agency introduced a plan to eliminate “illegal immigrants for the safety and security” of Japan in May last year.

Singapore-based DBS Bank Ltd stated that the Philippine peso is emerging as one of Asia’s most vulnerable currencies as deepening global oil crisis exposes the nation’s heavy reliance on imported energy and the lack of government subsidies.
DBS wrote in a commentary published last Friday that the peso is expected to underperform in the foreign exchange (forex) market alongside the Indian rupee, which recently hit a record low against the United States (US) dollar. The peso also plummeted to another all-time low last Friday, finishing at P60.55 per dollar.
Like India, the Philippines is grappling with vulnerabilities from oil price shocks, which have led the peso to reach a new all-time low, according to DBS senior forex strategist Philip Wee and forex and credit strategist Chang Wei Liang.
“Similarly, the peso remains highly vulnerable,” Wee and Liang said. Last Friday, the peso breached the 60.5 level as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East intensified, and the central bank stood firm in its view that there is no immediate need to defend the currency.
Wee and Liang said the Philippines stands as “most exposed to oil price pass-through due to zero subsidies and a 90 percent energy reliance on Gulf energy.”
Japanese financial giant MUFG Bank Ltd. and think tank Capital Economics also emphasized the Philippines’ high exposure to external market volatility, which is hurting the peso amid investors’ risk-off sentiment.
MUFG analysts said the peso is among the “weakest performers in the region” last week, declining by a total of 4.9 percent since the Israel-Iran conflict flare-up. It was surpassed only by the Thai baht, which has dropped 5.9 percent month-to-date.
Following the peso are the declines in the South Korean won (4.7 percent), Indian rupee (4.1 percent), and Malaysian ringgit (three percent). Meanwhile, the Vietnamese dong and Chinese yuan have been the most resilient currencies, with only around a one percent decline each.
DBS said that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is facing a dilemma: it must contain skyrocketing consumer prices while defending the peso amid extreme vulnerability to the worsening energy crisis, with the impacts more pronounced in heavy oil-importing economies.
Citing metrics from an Institute of International Finance (IIF) study, Wee and Liang labeled the currencies of the Philippines, South Korea, and Malaysia as “somewhat vulnerable” to oil price spikes stemming from the Middle East war.
Such metrics include direct trade exposure to oil imports, the growth impact of oil usage intensity, and vulnerability to agricultural and fertilizer supply shocks.
DBS assessed India, Thailand, and Vietnam as the most vulnerable to oil market shocks, while China and Indonesia are the least sensitive.
Despite the peso’s recent weakness, DBS projects the local currency to rebound toward 57.8 per dollar by the end of 2026. However, the pair is also seen climbing back to 59.9 by late 2027 and remaining within the 59 level through 2030.

America Points At Corruption Anew As Barrier To Trade And Investment With The Philippines
While the Philippines continued to be active on attracting investments from around the world, it still has yet to wipe out the plague of corruption which remains a persistent challenge in the private and public sectors. That being said, the United States pointed to the corruption as a major barrier to trade and investment with the Philippines, according to a Manila Bulletin news report. This is not the first time America noticed Philippine corruption in relation to economics.

The United States (US) has once again flagged corruption as a major barrier to trade and investment with the Philippines, as recent efforts to clean up regulatory and judicial processes have failed to yield positive results.
In this year’s National Trade Estimate (NTE) report, the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) said corruption continues to be a “pervasive and longstanding problem” in doing business in the Philippines. The report was released on Tuesday, March 31.
This year, unlike last year’s NTE report, the USTR specifies that corruption remains a persistent challenge in both the private and public sectors.
“National and local government agencies, for example the Bureau of Customs (BOC), are beset with various corruption issues, including allegations of overt bribery,” it said.
The USTR said attempts by the BOC to address customs and corruption concerns continue to fall short, as reports of corruption and irregularities in customs processing remain widespread.
In particular, US businesses are complaining about incidents of undue and costly delays, irregularities in the valuation process, exhaustive inspection and testing of some products, and inconsistent assessment of fees.
The USTR also called out the “lack of transparency in judicial and regulatory processes,” which ultimately undermines efforts to address corruption.
The agency is urging the Philippine government to deal with corruption once and for all, warning that it may impact trade and investment flows between the two longtime allies.
“If left unchecked, bribery and corruption can negate market access gained through trade negotiations, frustrate broader reforms and economic stabilization programs, and undermine the foundations of the international trading system,” the USTR said.
Despite the Philippines’ efforts to strengthen its intellectual property (IP) protection and enforcement, the USTR said the US remains dissatisfied with “inconsistent enforcement activities.”
“Stakeholders report issues with online piracy and sales of counterfeit goods, including apparel, shoes, watches, jewelry, perfume, and electronics,” it said.
Issues involving counterfeiting and piracy led to the continued inclusion of Greenhills Shopping Center in the 2025 Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy, or the USTR’s Notorious Markets List, released last month.
The government’s efforts to combat issues involving IP rights are weakened by the slow prosecution and conviction of cases, the USTR said.
Further, the USTR said that the US has concerns about the Philippines’ laws regarding the protection of internationally recognized labor rights, as well as the enforcement of labor laws.
The USTR noted that the Philippines currently does not have a ban on the importation of goods produced with forced or compulsory labor, which earlier prompted the agency to investigate the country along with 59 other economies.
Meanwhile, the agency also raised its objections to the country’s persistent problem with wildlife trafficking, which undercuts regulated trade in wildlife products and may lead to the contamination of global supply chains that would ultimately reach US consumers.
Without sufficient measures in place, the USTR said these market-distorting practices may weaken the trading relationship between the US and the Philippines.
“The Philippines has not entered into an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the US that includes commitments to address these distortions,” it said.
Philippine imports to the US, minus some exemptions, are subject to a 10-percent global tariff. This is lower than the 19-percent tariff imposed on such goods during the second half of last year.
Unlike countries that have negotiated tariff deals with the US, the Philippines remains at the whim of US President Donald Trump and his ever-unpredictable global trade agenda.
With the 2025 NTE report essentially shaping Trump’s tariff scheme last year, the USTR said the new 2026 report is no different, as it seeks to outline the US’ aim to rectify what it considers unfair trade practices of its trading partners.

Two years ago today, the Biden Administration desecrated Easter Sunday with a “transgender” message that elevated radical leftist ideology over faith, family, and biological truth. This Easter season, the Trump Administration is celebrating a decisive victory: the swift and unrelenting dismantling of subversive, woke policies that endangered children, eroded women’s rights, assaulted common sense, and dragged America toward moral and cultural decline.
Under President Trump, the era of government-sanctioned delusion is over:
President Trump declared it the official policy of the U.S. Government that there are only two immutable sexes: male and female.
President Trump banned federal funding, sponsorship, or promotion of the chemical and surgical mutilation of minors — protecting children from irreversible harm and directing agencies to defund institutions engaged in these practices.
As a result, more than three dozen health systems across the country — including Kaiser Permanente, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Children’s Minnesota, Denver Health, Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Stanford Medicine, NYU Langone, and many others — announced they are stopping or suspending child mutilation programs.
The Trump Administration ended the un-American indoctrination of schoolchildren by terminating federal support for “gender ideology” and “equity” curricula — enforcing parental rights and putting states on notice to remove such content or lose funding.
President Trump ended the unfair, demeaning practice of forcing women to compete against biological men in sports — which resulted in both the NCAA and the International Olympic Committee, as well as multiple state high school athletics associations, to realign with biological reality.

The Department of Health and Human Services conducted a comprehensive review of so-called “gender-affirming care” and confirmed the lack of medical or scientific evidence supporting its irreversible effects on minors.
The Trump Administration — including across the Department of War and the Department of Veterans Affairs — ceased all funding for sex change surgeries and related procedures.
President Trump eliminated radical gender ideology from U.S. service academies and training programs.
President Trump directed enforcement to protect single-sex spaces designed for women and girls — including bathrooms, locker rooms, and shelters — based on biological sex.
The Trump Administration axed billions of dollars in grants that had been used by states to perpetuate radical gender ideology and related propaganda.
The Trump Administration ended the practice of allowing gender self-identification on federal documents — including passports — restoring biological sex as the sole basis for official records.

Bewusst habe ich privat einige Entscheidungen getroffen: Microsoft daheim? Brauche ich nicht und nutze ich nicht. Google? Nur ab und zu, sehr selten und mit Unbehagen. Meta? Nur reaktiv — wegen WhatsApp und weil zu viele Bekannte noch auf Facebook sind.
Doch dann schaue ich mich zu Hause um. MacBooks. iPhones. Eine Apple Watch. Drei iPhones und drei MacBooks eigentlich, die Pfeiffers sind vollständig im Ökosystem. HomePods im Arbeits- und Wohnzimmer. Meine Musiksammlung, die vor langen Jahren mit iTunes begann. Fotos und Dateien? Liegen in der iCloud (und sind auch nochmals lokal im NAS gespeichert). Gesundheitsdaten und Fitness: „powered by Apple Watch“. Apple ist tief in meinen, in unseren digitalen Alltag eingewachsen.
Meine Energiewende ist ‚managed by Apple‘
Und die Geschichte geht weiter: meine PV-Anlage auf dem Dach. Die Wallbox in der Garage. Das Elektroauto. Und die smarten Heizkörperthermostate, über die ich schon 2022 im Blog geschrieben habe — damals noch mit dem Hinweis, dass man sich in der „etwas teureren Apple Home-kompatiblen Welt“ bewegt. Genau das ist passiert, und es ist weitergegangen.
Die Energiewende der Pfeiffers läuft über das iPhone. Die App, die zeigt, wie viel Strom die Anlage gerade produziert. Die App, die den Ladestand des Autos regelt. Die App, die die Heizkörper im ganzen Haus steuert. Das ist nicht mehr Lifestyle — das ist Infrastruktur. Meine Energiewende ist „managed by Apple“. Der Fairness halber: Manches kann ich im Browser machen, vieles ist jedoch von unterwegs auf dem iPhone viel einfacher.
Das ist der Punkt, an dem mein sonst gepflegtes Narrativ von der digitalen Souveränität ins Wanken gerät. Ich kann Europa ermutigen, auf Open Source zu setzen und US-Abhängigkeiten abzubauen. Ich kann beim ZenDiS-Podcast nicken, wenn Alexander Smolianitski sagt, Souveränität bedeute, jederzeit die Möglichkeit zu haben, zu wechseln.
Kein Lock-in mehr — das ist schon Beton
Aber was ist mit mir? Ein Wechsel weg von Apple würde nicht bedeuten, ein anderes Telefon zu kaufen. Es würde bedeuten, das gesamte System neu aufzubauen — Notebooks, Mobiltelefone, Haussteuerung, Energiemanagement, Musikbibliothek, alles. Das ist kein Lock-in mehr. Das ist schon Beton.
Dabei habe ich Apple über die Jahre nicht unkritisch begleitet. Ich habe schon 2018 festgehalten, dass Apple kein „Gutkonzern“ ist und ich viel zu viel Geld für die Geräte ausgegeben habe — aber dass das Datenschutzversprechen zumindest glaubwürdiger wirkte als bei Facebook oder Google. Das stimmt immer noch, mit allen Einschränkungen.
Harms benennt es heute klar: Vordergründig verkauft Apple Datenschutz als Luxusgut und Differenzierungsmerkmal — im Hinterzimmer verteidigt der Konzern verbissen seine Bastion. „Bestes“ Beispiel: der App Store. Erst nach jahrelangem Juristenkrieg hat die EU-Kommission erreicht, dass Apple seinen App Store für Drittanbieter zu öffnen verspricht.
Apple zahlt lieber EU-Strafen, als den Walled Garden wirklich zu öffnen
Passiert ist trotzdem wenig — Millionenstrafen inklusive. Der Walled Garden steht. Apple agiert als Gralshüter und Zöllner zugleich, kassiert seinen Zehnt von den App-Entwicklern und reguliert, was ins Ökosystem darf. Die EU kämpft. Apple zahlt lieber Strafen, als wirklich aufzumachen, scheint es.
Müssen die Pfeiffers privat mit dieser Abhängigkeit leben? Im Moment: ja. Nicht nur aus Bequemlichkeit — auch aus Kostengründen und weil das Ökosystem funktioniert, weil die Integration zwischen Energieanlage, Fahrzeug und Haus tatsächlich einen realen Mehrwert liefert, und weil die Alternative kein einzelnes neues Gerät wäre, sondern ein vollständiger Systemumbau.
Das ist der eigentliche Coup, den Apple in fünfzig Jahren gelandet hat. Nicht das iPhone. Nicht der Mac. Sondern die Tatsache, dass Apple seinen Kunden das Wechseln abgewöhnt hat — nicht durch Zwang, sondern weil das Zusammenspiel einfach funktioniert. Harms nennt das den „vergoldeten Käfig“. Wir leben darin, mit unserer Heizungssteuerung, unserer PV-Anlage und unserem Auto. Und auch auf meine Apple Watch möchte ich eigentlich nicht verzichten.
Kleine Ausstiegsschritte statt Maximalforderungen
Was also tun oder habe ich getan? In vielen Bereichen nutze ich bewusst keine Apple- oder Microsoft-Produkte: Office, Mail und Kalender liegen bei mailbox.org. Ich denke über Nextcloud nach. Mal schauen. Ist das perfekt? Nein, natürlich nicht, aber es sind mögliche Schritte, die ich gegangen bin. „Genau dort spielt sich die eigentliche Debatte ab – irgendwo zwischen pragmatischen Kompromissen und kleinen Ausstiegsschritten“, habe ich geschrieben, als ich Artikel von Mike Kuketz kommentiert habe: „Fortschritt entsteht selten durch Maximalforderungen, sondern durch realistische Schritte, die im Alltag funktionieren – und durch eine Kommunikation, die erklärt, statt zu urteilen“.
Also happy Birthday, Apple. Ich gratuliere euch — und hoffe, dass durch den Druck der EU mehr Wahlmöglichkeiten geschaffen und wir Schritt für Schritt etwas unabhängiger werden können.
Digital Independence Day: Am 5. April den nächsten Schritt wagen
Wer jetzt nicht nur nicken, sondern auch handeln will, dem sei ein konkreter Termin empfohlen: Am 5. April findet der nächste Digital Independence Day (DI.DAY) statt — und der ist kein einmaliges Ereignis. Der DI.DAY findet an jedem ersten Sonntag im Monat statt und wird von einem breiten zivilgesellschaftlichen Bündnis getragen.
Einmal im Monat lädt der DI.DAY dazu ein, schrittweise zu demokratiefreundlichen digitalen Alternativen zu wechseln und digitale Abhängigkeiten abzubauen. Auf der zentralen Website di.day gibt es dafür sogenannte Wechselrezepte — einfache Anleitungen, mit denen Menschen etwa von Gmail zu Posteo, von WhatsApp zu Signal oder von Chrome zu Firefox wechseln können.
Und ja, ich weiß: Wer seine PV-Anlage und seine Heizkörper über Apple Home steuert, wird den Wechsel nicht an einem Sonntag vollziehen. Aber vielleicht ist der Messenger ein Anfang.

The concept is to have Activity-specific "Fuck-Yes" ("Fantastically-Yes") playlists - so you're extra enthusiastic to do them: Gym work out, Doing dishes, Cleaning the house.
I have not been able to find a reliable #MP3 audio player, with minimal jank. iPod Nano-style. Bluetooth not necessary. Don't need a touch screen.
Ideally: Nikon DSLR camera-style tactile buttons & display.

In diesem Sinne wünschen wir unseren Patenkindern und Mitarbeiterinnen in Ruanda, allen Paten und Förderern, unseren Lesern, ja, und allen Menschen weltweit ein frohes und gesegnetes Osterfest.
Zugleich danken wir allen Spendern, die schon anläßlich unseres „Passionsdankopfers“ ihr Mitgefühl gezeigt und damit ihren Dank zum Ausdruck gebracht haben!
